Turin Film Festival 2016 Movie Review: Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

22 November 2016 12:56 PM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Title: Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie Director: Mandie Fletcher Starring: Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, June Whitfield, Jane Horrocks, Claudia Bing, Gwendoline Christie and Chris Colfer The witticism of ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ is not up to the standards of British humour. Director Mandie Fletcher opts for a coarse slapstick entertainment, as she condenses in a film the U.K. television show ‘Absolutely Fabulous.’ The comedy’s screenplay was written by Jennifer Saunders, based on her eponymous sitcom, where she plays the character of Edina Monsoon, the owner of a barely successful metropolitan PR company. Her best friend and partner in crime Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) relishes in the high life. Eddy  [ Read More ]

Film Review: ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ Too Thin to be Completely Winning

24 July 2016 3:42 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – As far as TV shows that fans wish could be movies, the cult hit “Absolutely Fabulous” was high on the list. The adventures of Patsy and Edina, two middle age Brits with an appetite for self medication, has had a dedicated following since it premiered in 1992. Even though there were six full TV seasons, and various reunions, “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” has emerged.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Although series creator (and portrayer of Edina) Jennifer Saunders wrote the screenplay, the film suffered with a not-quite-enough storyline that made 90 minutes seem longer. However, there are some magic and bizarrely funny moments in the film, even though the substance-abusing duo are getting a bit long in the tooth to keep the characters viable. But this is “Ab-Fab,” and viability is not really high on the radar, darling. For fans of the show, this is welcome fun, and for those not as familiar, caveat emptor. »

'Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie' Review: Lush for Life

22 July 2016 9:57 AM, PDT | Rollingstone.com | See recent Rolling Stone news »

Ever since Absolutely Fabulous swanned onto the BBC in 1992, there's been talk of a feature-film adventure — and now, 24 years later, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie has left Brexit-land to splash down on our shores. Moviegoers are now in the enviable position of spending decadent quality time with P.R. guru Edina "Eddy" Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and her fashionista and champagne-and-coke savant bestie Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley). Diehard fans will find Eddy and Patsy even more AbFab on the big screen. The movie? Not so much. Too many locations, a convoluted plot, »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie – Review

22 July 2016 6:06 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie reunites fashionista-wannabee gal pals Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) from the 1990s hit British TV comedy for more of their hard partying, party-crashing, champagne-swilling inappropriate shenanigans.

First off: if you are not already a fan steeped in the old British TV show Absolutely Fabulous but think Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie might give you a taste of what all the fuss was about, forget it – this film is not for you. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is strictly for fans, and unlike some movie adaptions, it does not give the uninitiated even much thought. It is possible to watch the whole film with nary a chuckle, having the nagging feeling there are plenty of in-jokes there soaring over your head. You would be right.

If you are a committed Ab Fab fan, the movie version may well be hilarious. At the promotional screening, there »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie review: grab the Bolly, darling

8 July 2016 7:50 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Sends up one-upwomanship, egotistical self-help, and reflexive hedonism with zing. It is a sheer triumph to see two older women being really funny onscreen. I’m “biast” (pro): love the TV show

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Did model Kate Moss fall off that balcony at a glitzy London fashion party, into the Thames and presumably drowned, her body lost to the currents of the river? Or was she pushed? Oh, of course she was pushed! But was it an accident, or did legendary PR veteran Edina Monsoon mean to take out the fashion icon?

Sweetie! Darling! Anyone who knows Eddie like we do knows she would never intentionally destroy her goddess, especially not when she was hoping to snag Moss as a new client. And know Eddie well we certainly do, we lovers of the BBC sitcom that »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, 2016.

Directed by Mandie Fletcher.

Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, Celia Imrie and June Whitfield.

Synopsis:

Edina and Patsy are still oozing glitz and glamor, living the high life they are accustomed to; shopping, drinking and clubbing their way around London’s trendiest hot-spots. Blamed for a major incident at an uber fashionable launch party, they become entangled in a media storm and are relentlessly pursued by the paparazzi. Fleeing penniless to the glamorous playground of the super-rich, the French Riviera, they hatch a plan to make their escape permanent and live the high life forever more!

Making the move from beloved TV sitcom to the big screen is always going to be a risk. Cinemagoers have seen the dizzy heights of The Inbetweeners and Alan Partridge translate easily but they are exceptions to the rule. Usually you find the characters you love are now unfunny, »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie review – you can be too thin, darling

3 July 2016 12:00 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Eddy and Patsy are still a blast, but too many tired jokes and celebrity cameos pad out a painfully-stretched film

Nearly 25 years since Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) first staggered on to our televisions, they finally make their big-screen debut. And like many TV spin-offs (most recently the Entourage film), material which worked in a 30-minute episode feels as painfully stretched as a botched facelift at feature-film length. Still, the booze-storming performances from Saunders and Lumley provide a welcome, if slightly sozzled, levity. The timing is fortuitous too – the film provides a champagne bubble of counter-programming for both the football-averse and the news-weary.

Directed by Mandie Fletcher, responsible for several Ab Fab television episodes, and written by Saunders, the film, like its subjects, is chaotic, frequently lazy and unhealthily obsessed with celebrity. Famous faces too numerous to list pop up instead of punchlines – this is comedy which leans »

Movie Review – Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016)

1 July 2016 3:30 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, 2016.

Directed by Mandie Fletcher.

Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Kate Moss, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, June Whitfield, Kathy Burke, Celia Imrie, Graham Norton, Jeremy Paxman, Jon Hamm, Janette Tough and Robert Webb.

Synopsis:

Two self-indulgent ladies find themselves at the centre of a media storm as one of them, a PR spokesperson, is accused of the murder of a highly sought after model.

Its confession time: this humble reviewer seldom ever watched the original show. Now, before you extradite me for the heretic that I clearly am, I wish to add that the moments I did glimpse did in fact entertain me. So this review will be from a non-fans perspective. Therefore, the burning question is, could a casual film-goer watch and enjoy this film? Yes. But, I must stress, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie also does a great service to the fans of the original.

Jennifer Saunders Says Her Dream ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ Prequel Would Star Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham

29 June 2016 4:01 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

On Wednesday night, being beyond fabulous was obligatory to gain entry into Leicester Square’s Odeon for the world premiere of “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” in London. Drag queens by the dozen littered the golden carpet, blinding fans with sequin reflections and glistening full body latex — a scene that made star and scribe, Jennifer Saunders, and partner in Lacroix-covered crime, Joanna Lumley, look shockingly under-dressed.

To date 2016 has proved a grim year for celebrity survival. So it was joyous news that Kate Moss’ reported demise, having drowned in the river Thames, never to pout again, was merely the plot for the film.

Quarter of a century on from its small screen conception, what made here and now ripe for the resurrection of faux fashionistas, Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone? Producer, Jon Plowman, was on hand to explain the team’s simple, killer push. “Part of the reason we did this was, »

Film Review: ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’

29 June 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A prime-time sitcom that rolled its eyes at family values and reveled in the joys of middle-aged, unattached women behaving badly, Jennifer Saunders’ “Absolutely Fabulous” was a pretty rare bird when it tumbled into U.K. living rooms in 1992. Nearly a quarter of a century later, it still is: Younger female writers like Lena Dunham and Sharon Horgan may owe a degree of their edge to Saunders’ klutzy trailblazing, but there’s still nothing quite as anarchically feminine as “Ab Fab” on our TV screens. The same goes twice over in the male-dominated realm of big-screen comedy, which makes “Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie” a fresher prospect than such a long-belated spinoff deserves to be: No other summer release, after all, is going to give us a drag-revue singalong to “At Seventeen,” indelibly describe a jacuzzi as “a smoothie of old sperm,” or divulge the secret of Jon Hamm’s deflowering. »
