Oliver Reed as Athos in The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester, 1973/1974, UK):
These films were actually shot all at once but ultimately released as two separate films telling one long story. As the musketeer with a dark past, Oliver Reed provides a lot of the heart and soul in these very entertaining and well-made films. Technically, since we have to isolate one film for our fantasy nomination, it would be The Four Musketeers as his role is more prominent in that film. Reed’s reunion scene with Faye Dunaway’s Milady is superb as is Reed’s intense swordplay with an array of opponents including Christopher Lee. An underrated actor whose career was damaged by well-documented alcohol problems and notorious off-screen behavior, Reed still logged in some truly incredible acting performances over the course of his career. His portrayal of Athos is definitely one of them.

If you’ve hunted around for movie bargains, you’ve probably seen some of Mill Creek Entertainment’s 50-Movie Packs on DVD. Apart from other great releases by Mill Creek, these packs are phenomenal boons to cinephiles looking to collect older titles.
There are three new packs available, and I want to not only let you in on a discount code, but I have one of the packs available for you to win.
I know a lot of people may be quick to overlook these packs, and not every movie included stands out as a major value, but there are some great titles in each of them, and fans of the genres will be pleasantly surprised by what they get out of the deal. I have to admit that there is something about seeing a 50-movie pack, especially when it doesn’t cost a couple of hundred dollars, or more, »

This story originally appeared in the May 4 issue of The Hollywood Reporter. The White House Correspondents' Association dinner -- not so long ago merely a cozy annual assemblage of journalists and the politicians and operatives who are their sources -- has now gone Hollywood to such an amusing extent that workaday D.C. is getting seriously squeezed. For much of the event's existence, the president was the undisputed guest of honor, and members of the entertainment industry such as Bob Hope and Milton Berle were solely called on to, well, entertain onstage. Charles Boyer, Hedy Lamarr, Algiers Hedy Lamarr can be seen later this month on Turner Classic Movies: I Take This Woman (1940) will be shown on Saturday, April 28, and The Conspirators (1944) on Monday, April 30. I Take This Woman was a troubled production that took so long to make — W.S. Van Dyke replaced Frank Borzage who had replaced original director Josef von Sternberg — that punsters called it "I Retake This Woman." Spencer Tracy co-stars as a doctor who marries European refugee Lamarr. Jean Negulesco’s The Conspirators has several elements in common with Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca, including an "exotic" World War II setting (in this case, Lisbon), conflicting loyalties, male lead Paul Henreid, and supporting players Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. Curiously, at one point Lamarr had been considered for the Casablanca role that eventually went to Ingrid Bergman. Neither I Take This Woman nor The Conspirators did much for Hedy Lamarr’s Hollywood career. »

A bunch of brave firemen had the time of their life putting out a massive blaze that took down a piece of very cherished movie history.
MSNBC reports that over 43 fire companies and 300 firefighters had to rally together to douse the flames that devoured the Catskills condominium complex formerly known as Brown's Hotel, which inspired the affluent resort Kellerman's in "Dirty Dancing," the favorite movie of nearly every member of the female gender.
While no one was killed or injured in what is being called the "largest fire in Catskills history," many residents lost their homes and belongings, as well as the fantasy that Patrick Swayze would someday lift them up in the air in a dancehall. This is the latest in a series of tragedies to befall the legacy of the film, after Swayze's death and Jennifer Grey's nose job.

Are you under the age of 50? If so, you've probably never seen "The Iron Petticoat," well, unless you live in the U.K. that is. It's notoriously one of the most elusive titles for fans of classic cinema, having never been shown on U.S. television nor released on home video. But now -- 56 years after it was originally released - the movie will finally make its premiere on TCM later this year.
The 1956 Cold War comedy was directed by Ralph Thomas and starred Bob Hope (although the role was originally written for Cary Grant) and Katherine Hepburn, and focuses on Hepburn's Russian jet pilot who lands in West Germany and is quickly converted to capitalism after spending time with Hope's Major Lockwood. But hey, this isn't all about political ideals, there's also a love story in there as well. Essentially, it's very much in the vein of "Ninotchka" (in fact they are so similar, »

Back in 1988, Kirk Cameron wasn’t the sad birthday party having, anti-gay son of a bitch he is today. Nope, back then he was Mike Seaver! Bona fide star of hit television series Growing Pains! Billy Crystal performs at the 84th annual Academy Awards
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
There were jokes about old relatives, bar mitzvahs and other tried-and-true familiar shticks from the only comedian to host the Oscars nearly as many times as Bob Hope, but Billy Crystal came armed with a surprising amount of some Ricky Gervais-style bite, too.
The veteran comedic actor's ninth turn as host of the Academy Awards followed a string of headline-making turmoil behind the scenes. Crystal was drafted to replace Eddie Murphy, who walked after producer Brett Ratner (who had directed Murphy in "Tower Heist") abruptly left the show following his use of a homophobic slur at a Q&A. Producer Brian Grazer eventually stepped in.
The show began with two Crystal staples: a montage »

In his ninth time hosting the Academy Awards, Crystal isn't planning to 'go after people' like some recent awards-show emcees.

Although Billy Crystal wasn't the Academy's first pick to host the Oscars this year, the veteran emcee is a breath of familiar air to Hollywood's main event.
This year marks Crystal's ninth time hosting the show, and at age 63, he will be the oldest solo host of the event since Bob Hope in 1978 (Steve Martin was 64 when he co-hosted with Alec Baldwin in 2010). Coincidentally, the "When Harry Met Sally" star received a standing ovation from the Oscar audience last year when he appeared onstage briefly to honor Hope.
While some awards-show hosts of late have ventured into taboo and risky territory (see: Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais), Crystal has always carried out his duties with class and his own special brand of charisma, »

With so much consideration going into predicting the 2012 Oscar winners and losers, the number of calculations and formulas can be dizzying. How many awards will "The Artist" win? Can Woody Allen win his fourth Oscar? Numbers play a big role in the effort leading up to Hollywood's most important night.
Will the show go for four hours, 23 minutes, like it did when Whoopi Goldberg hosted in 2002? How long is the average show? With so many people commenting on how heavy their new trophies are, how much does an Oscar actually weigh? Has composer John Williams really been nominated that many times?
To make sense of the plethora of factors and digits, we've assembled a helpful guide to all the »

Hollywood is looking to past glories and perhaps even the outlandish character from Sacha Baron Cohen's latest film to revive a jaded awards ceremony
Was it all stage-managed from the start? The "will he, won't he?" battle over Sacha Baron Cohen's appearance at tonight's Oscar ceremony has ended with victory for the comic actor, who will now be a focus of attention at this year's awards.
For some, however, the last-minute U-turn, allowing the actor to attend in character as his latest alter ego has all the hallmarks of a slick marketing exercise. It is the Oscars, after all.
Initially, Cohen had been barred from appearing in character as Admiral General Shabazz Aladeen, from his new film The Dictator, about the leader of a fictional Middle Eastern country called Wadiya.
But after a high-profile to-and-fro conducted in the glare of the public eye, Oscars organisers apparently relented when »
