Rebel Wilson Will Headline A Remake Of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

4 August 2016 10:54 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

As if wishing to prove correct the accusation that Hollywood is currently engaged in a mission to gender swap its entire back catalogue – as if that goes some way to addressing issues of inequality within the industry – MGM has announced its intention to remake Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, as a female-led project. Rebel Wilson will produce and star in this revisiting of the popular 1988 comedy.

The original starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine as two con men attempting to covertly free an heiress of her money. It is a well-regarded entry into the comedy genre of the late-80s – reflecting the arrogance and excesses of the era, combined with the comedy-sparring of Martin and Caine. This new version – written by Jac Schaeffer – will see the lead roles gender-swapped, as two female con artists pit themselves against each other to manipulate a naïve tech industry genius into handing over his millions.

5 Other Movie Franchises That Crashed Onto Television

21 July 2016 5:06 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

News this week came in that the final planned Divergent Series movie would be skipping the theaters and go direct to television/DVD.  It’s a rare move for such a major studio franchise to make, and it got me to thinking about other movie series that fizzled and did the same.  Come inside to check out a history of downward sliding franchises!

If I come off sounding a bit harsh about all this, it’s mostly due to the fact that it’s such a bizarre situation.  It’s been awhile since a studio franchise had to dropped down to direct-to-television and it’s not a good thing.  Sure, Lionsgate is trying to spin the information that it’s part of a planned way to jumpstart a spin-off TV series...but the reality is this isn’t how they wanted The Divergent Series to end.

It’s a failure, »

Ian Sander, the prolific TV producer who with his wife Kim Moses was the force behind such series as “Ghost Whisperer” and “Profiler,” died Tuesday at his home in Malibu. He was 68.

Sander and Moses have consistently fielded multiple pilots during the past few years. In the current development cycle the pair exec produced the ABC drama pilot “Spark,” which shot in Prague in March and early April. Sander also worked as a director.

Flix Premiere Ready for Its Close-Up

11 April 2016 10:26 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

While Hollywood is loudly warring over Screening Room, another viewing revolution that promises to benefit indie cinema in particular has just arrived — Flix Premiere, which was launched April 4 in the U.K. and the U.S. by film producer and tech entrepreneur Martin Warner, will add more territories this summer.

Calling the service “a digital cineplex online and on-demand, where cinema meets the distributor,” Warner says that by combining “curated theatrical releases” with on-demand availability where viewers “pay per film, not with monthly subscriptions,” moviegoers will have “a single, simple destination where they can discover great new and old movies, especially indies.”

Warner notes that traditional theatrical distribution and programming models “are set up for blockbusters and primetime slots — and that’ll never change. And all the indies have, by comparison, very little marketing and placement. So we saw this as a great opportunity to try something new,
