Stefanie Scott, who is currently shooting Jem and the Holograms for Jason Blum, has signed on to star in the producer's horror sequel Insidious Chapter 3 for Focus Features.

No plot details have been released at this time, although it was confirmed last month that Leigh Whannell is writing and directing the sequel, taking over the directorial reins from Insidious and Insidious Chapter 2 director James Wan.

It isn't known if Insidious and Insidious Chapter 2 stars Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Angus Sampson will reprise their roles for the sequel, or if Leigh Whannell will return as paranormal investigator Specs. Our report from last month revealed that production will begin on July 7.

Warning! Here are 10 Films Not to Watch With Your Mother on Mother's Day

10 May 2014 10:35 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Earlier this week we shared our list of indies to watch with your mother this Mother's Day and today comes our list of indies to avoid watching with mom at all costs. Here are some mommy-centric indies you'd never want to watch with your mother: "Birth," dir. Jonathan Glazer Your mom may love Nicole Kidman, but she'll likely be put off by her role in this movie -- especially if she's widowed. The story details a woman (Kidman) mourning her late husband, only to meet a little boy who claims he's her husband reincarnated. Aside from the depressing notion of losing a loved one, the whole plot basically consists of a disturbing relationship between a middle-aged woman and the little boy she's falling in love with. The fact that Kidman nails her performance here would typically make for great viewing, but on Mother's Day it won't do much besides creeping you and your mother out. »

Writer Leigh Whannell to Direct Insidious: Chapter 3; Release Date Revealed

With the director of Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2 busy making his mark on the action genre by helming Fast & Furious 7, directing duties on the third movie have been handed over to writer Leigh Whannell.

If his name is familiar, it’s because he also wrote the first two chapters. He also co-created the Saw franchise with James Wan and will direct the third instalment of the popular Insidious franchise (the first two films combined grossed over $250 million at the worldwide box office) from his own script.

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced both Insidious films, is producing the next instalment along with Oren Peli and Wan.

Shooting is scheduled to start on July 7th later this year, and while the first two films starred Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins and Barbara Hershey, it’s unclear if any of them will actually return for Insidious: Chapter 3. »

Cannes Check 2014: Michel Hazanavicius' 'The Search'

7 May 2014 10:44 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Welcome back to Cannes Check, In Contention's annual preview of the films in Competition at next month's Cannes Film Festival, which kicks off on May 14. Taking on different selections every day, we'll be examining what they're about, who's involved and what their chances are of snagging an award from Jane Campion's jury. Next up, from the most recent Oscar winner in the lineup: Michael Hazanavicius' "The Search." The director: Michel Hazanavicius (French, 47 years old). Three years ago, Hazanavicius was a somewhat unlikely Competition entrant: regarded as a lightweight commercial comedy director, his film was initially placed in a non-competitive slot, and only upgraded when another planned inclusion didn't pan out. That film, of course, was "The Artist." Now, Hazanavicius returns to the festival with an Oscar to his name, while he and his wife -- last year's Best Actress winner Bérénice Bejo -- are one of French cinema's premier power couples. »

Rachel Weisz And Director Catherine Hardwicke Join Miss You Already

22 April 2014 2:49 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Rachel Weisz and Toni Collette are two fine actors who should have made a deeper impression in Hollywood by now. Both bring their A-game to each film they are in, but they do not always pick the right projects. Occasionally though, we see a masterful performance (Weisz in The Deep Blue Sea, Collette on Showtime’s The United States of Tara) that reminds us of their talents. Now, both actresses are attached to Miss You Already, a drama following two best friends going through an emotional crisis.

Collette has been linked to this project since 2012, when Jennifer Aniston was signed on. Weisz, however, is only now coming on board to take Aniston’s role, as one of the forty-something friends who gets diagnosed with breast cancer, while Collette is a woman who becomes pregnant for the first time and starts a family. Both are lifelong friends torn apart by the changing world around them. »

Valancourt Books' Ryan Cagle on Re-Releasing Classic and Modern Out of Print Horror Stories

22 April 2014 8:30 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Tuesdays are when new books are typically released, and horror fans usually don’t have too much trouble finding something to read. There is Amazon of course and publishers like Samhain and Cemetery Dance…

We also boast authors ranging from "The King" himself to Dan Simmons, Robert McCammon, the late Thomas Tryon, Tim Curran, Aussies Stephen Irwin, Brett McBean, and Aaron Dries as well as Brits such as David Moody, anthologist Stephen Jones, and Mark Morris, to name just a very few.

But what if you long for the paperback originals which seemed to flood bookstores back in the 80s or want to read even earlier horror that is long out of print? What to do? Well, you turn to Valancourt Books to assuage those yearnings. And we recently spoke with Ryan Cagle, one half of the publishing team that brings those long unavailable titles to life for readers to enjoy again, »

The Definitive Religious Films: 10-1

And here we are. The day after Easter and we’ve reached the top of the mountain. While compiling this list, it’s become evident that true religious films just aren’t made anymore (and if they are, they are widely panned). That being said, religious themes exist in more mainstream movies than ever, despite there being no deliberate attempts to dub the films “religious.” Faith, God, whatever you want to call it – it’s influenced the history of nations, of politics, of culture, and of film. And these are the most important films in that wheelhouse. There are only two American films in the top 10, and only one of them is in English.
