DVD Playhouse—April 2012
By Allen Gardner
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan, »

Kind of useless when compared to the bigger picture. Rita Wilson (she was deliciously smug), Jonathan Groff, Amy Sedaris, Parker Posey, John Benjamin Hickey, Denis O'Hare and Edward Herrmann all made return appearances in this jam-packed episode of "The Good Wife."
Let's just get through the less interesting stuff first -- and by less interesting, I just mean when compared with the overarching storyline that drives the show. As individual storylines, these two »

Sigh. We barely even saw Kalinda this episode. But this is a good opportunity to refer you to a panel on The Good Wife from this week's New York Times Art & Leisure Weekend, featuring Patricia Cohen interviewing Robert and Michelle King, Julianna Margulies, Josh Charles and Christine Baranski. If you're a fan of Tgw, it's an hour well spent. Hearing the writers and actors discuss the characters' development and relationships is fascinating — and reveals again just how well written this show is.
