Watch Lookouts, A Highly Impressive Fantasy Short

20 September 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Inspired by the work of Jim Henson and featuring what appears to be all in-camera creature and visual FX, Lookouts is an impressive fantasy short from new director David Bousquet. Certainly it rivals anything we've seen from recent big budget fantasy films like Seventh Son so I hope this gets him some attention.   Lookouts was filmed in the misty overgrowth of Mendocino’s redwood forests and overall looks simply stunning.  Synopsis: On their final trial as village lookouts, a troop of young scouts are ambushed by the very creature they were hunting. After a violent battle the lone survivor, Pehn, escapes into the shadows of the Eyrewood, a mysterious and deadly forest that is home to all manner of wild creatures. The most horrifying of all is the...

Emily S. Whitten: Convention Catch-Up — Yay, Dragon Con!

20 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Time flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday I was watching Animaniacs Live, interviewing folks about Turtles and cartoons, seeing the latest in geek fashions, hanging out with American Gods, and chatting with the Kings of Con at Sdcc, not to mention chillin’ at Nerd HQ. And now suddenly it’s September, and I’ve since attended both the UK Discworld Convention and Dragon Con! Convention season: it really never stops, does it?

Despite my busy schedule, I don’t want to miss sharing any of the fantastic adventures I’ve been having with you; so first, let’s rewind to San Diego and reminisce about the summer party-party-parties, because they are a staple of Sdcc and deserve to be featured. Every year, I try to line up at least a couple of parties each night, because, let’s be frank, I just love a good party. (I »

Blossom Written and directed by Spencer Lott At Dixon Place, NYC September 9-September 24, 2016

No one wants to hear the phrase "end-of-life decisions."  Moments after being introduced to us via a daring act of heroism, James Blossom (voiced by Rowan Magee), is being advised by a doctor to make his as soon as possible. James, the eponymous Blossom of puppet artist, director, and filmmaker Spencer Lott's new play, developed with support from the Jim Henson Foundation, has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and we follow James and his daughter Kathryn, a.k.a. Katy, a.k.a. Katy Bee (Jamie Agnello), as they do their best to navigate the practical, psychological, and emotional fallout of James's disease.

The advance of his Alzheimer's precipitates James's move into assisted living facility, against his wishes, of course.  There, he meets fellow residents Maisey and Ronald.  The symbolism around loss of control generated by »

Ryan Lochte Opens Up About His "Challenging" Dancing With the Stars Week After the Protester Ambush

20 September 2016 6:19 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Ryan Lochte channeled Kermit the Frog on Dancing With the Stars when he danced to The Muppet Show theme song, but he didn't know who the famous felt amphibian was? In the taped package, Lochte said his favorite Muppet was "the green one." Cheryl Burke is here to clear that up. "You see, this is his humor. He's very dry and sarcastic. It is what it is," Burke told E! News' Sibley Scoles. Phew. It was a different tone for the Olympian and his pro partner after last week's Dancing With the Stars season 23 premiere was crashed by anti-Lochte protesters. Must Watch: Scouts vs Basilisk in This Incredible Short Film 'Lookouts'

16 September 2016 12:40 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Tomorrow holds your final trial as Lookouts..." Short films just keep getting better and better. Lookouts is a homemade short directed by David Bousquet (who is also the film's director of photography) inspired by a Penny Arcade comic series about "Lookouts" scouts who head into a deadly forest to hunt a creature. This live-action short follows one of the scouts, Pehn, who escaped the first attack and is being tracked by the basilisk. You'll be amazed to discover that "the majority of the film is shot practically with live visual effects." They made "sets, costumes, and monsters inspired by Jim Henson's creations from our childhood" and filmed this in Mendocino. It's seriously astonishing how good this is, and you'll wish it was even longer. [Tiff Review] A Monster Calls

10 September 2016 8:21 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

When your author and illustrator both win Carnegie and Greenaway Medals for the same book, you can bet Hollywood will come knocking. Even though the production is a joint effort between Britain (the majority of its cast) and Spain (The Orphanage director J.A. Bayona), it was Focus Features who scooped up the rights to Patrick NessA Monster Calls. The decision was a no-brainer even without the accolades as it is a fairy tale proving a welcome return to storybook ilk of my own childhood. Dark enough to receive a PG-13 rating, it’s also profoundly moving in teaching someone that age (or a bit younger) a lesson in mortality. And just because the topic is difficult doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be unapologetically honest.

Who better to tell it than a terminally ill cancer patient in Siobhan Dowd, the writer contracted to bring the tale to life »

At PBS, Chasing Kids Who Watch ‘Odd Squad,’ ‘Daniel Tiger’ Isn’t Child’s Play

8 September 2016 8:54 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The sounds of “Saturday Night Live” are being enjoyed by an audience that could never stay up late enough to hear them.

When tykes tune in to “Nature Cat,” an animated series on PBS, they routinely hear the voices of “SNL” mainstays like Taran Killam (who recently left the show), Bobby Moyinhan, Kate McKinnon and, occasionally, Kenan Thompson. There are no impressions of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and no appearance by “Drunk Uncle,”one of the characters Moynihan regularly trots out on the NBC program’s “Weekend Update.” On the other hand, there are plenty of comments by Hal the Dog and Squeeks the Cat, all following the show’s titular feline into outdoors adventure.

Not Ready for Prime Time Players aren’t the only things on PBS’ daily schedule for kids that might surprise adults. There are fewer sing-song recitals of the alphabet and more of the programs focus on problem solving, experimentation »

Thickens, the plot has.

Earlier this year, Frank Oz was in London for work. Oz is the voice of Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, and, of course, the wise Star Wars Jedi Master Yoda. Episode VIII was filming just outside of London in Pinewood Studios.

“Big spoon, I am.”

Then it came out that the Skelig Michael recreation set – built to mimic the island that Rey and Luke Skywalker are still presumably staring at each other on after the end of The Force Awakens – had been rigged to allow puppetry. »

What happened to 1990's 10 most promising movie executives?

31 August 2016 2:31 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Simon Brew Sep 2, 2016

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?

In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.

Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...

Lance Young

Senior production VP, Paramount Pictures

Pictured in the article on an office swivel chair with some snazzy purple socks, Lance Young, Premiere wrote, had been “groomed for big things since joining Paramount at the age of 23”. He was 30 at the time the article was published, and »

Every month there are classic family-friendly features playing on Saturday mornings at 11am. Admission is only $2.99 and a portion of the proceeds goes towards Free the Children. Why not treat the family by introducing the next generation to an old favourite, or discover a new family favourite together, on the big screen! »
