18 July 2009 6:43 PM, PDT | From www.actressarchives.com | See recent Actress Archives news

Perhaps the result of too much time spent in the sun, or perhaps just an attempt to freak out German people, if this interview posted today by Perez Hilton tells us anything about Lady GaGa, it's that she may soon find herself running out of ways to make people say "she wore what?"

More Talk On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

4 July 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | From FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news

Back in April of this year co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peter Laird, confirmed plans to bring a rebooted, live action film to the big screen. Now “Superman Returns” producer Scott Mednick has put in his two cents on the project, currently expected to hit theatres in 2011.

Mednick spoke to Mania.com about the project, stressing the importance of introducing the characters to a new generation of kids:

“We are intent on re-telling the origin, as it was in Batman, as it was in Superman, frankly as it was in Spider-Man. We have an entire new generation of fans who really don’t know the full back story,” Mednick told Mania.com in an exclusive interview. “As great as the [2007 animated film 'Tmnt'] was, my son said, ‘how come a rat is their father?’ You know? Because he wasn’t around for the 1990 version.”

That said, the producer has also promised not to alienate the existing,

Hooch ‘n’ Harmonies

Undertones: Volume 2 In the 1940s the consumption of alcohol was predominantly glamorised on the silver screen. Starlets sipped sensuously on their g & t’s whilst detectives downed shots of whiskey before departing the office on a hot lead. If this was an accurate portrayal of the time, one has to ask how the hell anyone got anything done whilst being so heavily sauced. Despite the era’s predilection for depicting alcohol ingestion as a sophisticated way to spend one’s time, a film emerged from this period that actually dared to show the repercussions of excess binges with the bottle; Billy Wilder’s Oscar winning film, The Lost Weekend (1945). Starring Ray Milland in the lead role as Don Birham, a recovering alcoholic writer, The Lost Weekend follows four chaotic days as Birham jumps back on the wagon. 24 June 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | From MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news

Editor’s note: This is far, far outside of Movies Blog’s coverage zone, I know. But “Fraggle Rock” is the greatest and this news is hella cool. So enjoy.

From Splash Page: This week, Archaia Comics and the Jim Henson Company confirmed rumors of a potential partnership between the two creative companies, and offered official word that the pair would be publishing new comic book series and graphic novels based on popular properties like “The Dark Crystal,” “Labyrinth” and “Mirrormask.” And while this news on its own should be enough to excite fans of Henson’s varied and much beloved library, the pair also offered Splash Page readers the exclusive announcement regarding which property will be the first to hit shelves.

“‘Fraggle Rock’ is going to be the first book that we launch,” Archaia’s Director of Development, Stephen Christy, told MTV News. “We’re launching with ‘Fraggle Rock

Art of Horror: Dr. Sketchy L.A.

16 June 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | From Fangoria.com | See recent Fangoria news

Our friend Bob over at Baby Tattoo shot Fango a note about an art/fashion event they're producing in L.A.

Readers in the Los Angeles area may want to check this one out:

Artists and art voyeurs take note: if you are attracted to the darker things in life, the ringleaders at Dr. Sketchy’s Los Angeles are unleashing a visual thunderstorm at their June life drawing salon. The venue is an underworldly lair called Medusa Lounge. Models Julie Bolene and Lavendar La Rue will be posing in unsettling fashions by Louis Fleischauer of Amf Korsets. And tunes will be provided by artist Tim Biskup’s alter ego, DJ Alphabeast. Expect an experience somewhere between Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” and Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser”. 21 and up. http://www.drsketchyla.com.

Is Tina Fey stealing from Kermit the Frog?

12 June 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | From AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news

It's that time again, kiddies: Pop Quiz Friday!

Question: What do these two pictures have in common?

Answer: According to writer Bryan Lynch, everything.

This week Lynch posited a hypothesis that our beloved Tina Fey ripped-off her critically-acclaimed 30 Rock from Jim Henson's Muppet Show. You can pshaw! and pfft! all you want, but you should at least take a look at the evidence:

Liz Lemon vs. Kermit the Frog

Both are the most normal characters on their respective shows. Both are unlucky at love. Both are neurotic worrywarts and type-a personalities who slow burn into a crazy breakdown once per episode. And both have some kind of flirtation with the guest stars that ultimately goes nowhere.

Jenna Maroney vs. Miss Piggy

Blonde and beautiful ... but possessing, to put it politely, questionable talent. Both characters' vanity and desire to be the star of the show leads them to connive and backstab.

Henson Goes On Monster Safari

6 June 2009 11:37 AM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

The Henson name is synonymous with puppets, or rather, Muppets. Not so much animation, but everyone deserves a shot at it these days, right? According to THR, The Jim Henson Co. has joined forces with a team from Screen Novelties to begin production on Monster Safari. The team includes scribes Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman as well as directors Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh. Based on a previous Screen Novelties short, the movie will be stop-motion animated and will likely revolve around monsters on some sort of safari, probably in the jungle. I'm not familiar with any of their previous work, but Screen Novelties seems to have a pretty interesting style going and working with Henson will only help that. Although I'm skeptical about anything stop-motion that isn't done by Aardman, this should be an interesting addition to the genre. Check out their website here for an idea

Screen Novelties' Monster Safari to Become a Feature Film

5 June 2009 11:45 AM, PDT | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

I hope this is a sign that the Jim Henson Company is coming back in a big way. The Screen Novelties short film Monster Safari is being adapted into a feature stop-motion project for the Jim Henson Co. Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman, who started the site Homestar Runner, will be working with three directors from Screen Novelties, Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh, to create the feature version of Monster Safari. The story revolves around what happens when the Earth's monsters come out of hiding and a pair of bumbling crypto-zoologists spring into action to save them from a ruthless big-game hunter. "What's great about Screen Novelties is their look and feel is very Henson-esque," Henson Co exec Jason Lust said. "There was a stylistic similarity." It's great to see them break out like this, especially at a place like the Jim Henson Co. "They have a wry,

Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman Head for Monster Safari

3 June 2009 6:35 PM, PDT | From MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news

In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Zobel and Matt Chapman are writing and creating Monster Safari.

The screenwriting duo as well three directors from the effects/production company Screen Novelties, they are Mark Caballero, Chris Finnegan and Seamus Walsh, will all join forces to create this stop-motion animation project for the Jim Henson Co.

Originally, the film started as a short from Screen Novelties. Henson executives Lisa Henson and Jason Lust decided the short should be feature.

"What's great about Screen Novelties is their look and feel is very Henson-esque," Lust stated. "There was a stylistic similarity."

The story looks at what happens when the Earth's monsters decide to stop hiding and two crypto-zoologists rush to save them from an evil big-game hunter.

"They have a wry, witty sense of humor that fits perfectly with the Henson and the Screen Novelties approach to comedy," Lust offered.

‘Fraggle Rock’ Comic Book In The Works?

29 May 2009 2:07 PM, PDT | From MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news

Jim Henson’s foam-faced creations are certainly making a comeback in comics these days. Boom! Studios’ “The Muppet Show” and “The Muppets: Robin Hood” have been stirring up nostalgia for a while now, but rumors are surfacing across the ‘net indicating that another generation of Muppets could find new life in comics. A series of recent hints from publisher Archaia Studios Press seem to indicate that babies of the ’80s will soon be reunited with HBO and Jim Henson Production’s “Fraggle Rock” franchise.

Yesterday, Archaia Director of Development Stephen Christy posted a fairly cryptic message via Twitter, which read, “I guess I should post another clue to Archaia’s next big announcement…” He included a link to a closely cropped photo of what resembles the pigtailed “Fraggle Rock” character Red.

While the message and link were later removed, Comic Book Resources managed to snag the the image — which we’ve posted below:

[DVD Review] Walt Disney Animation Collection: Volume 1: Mickey and the Beanstalk

16 May 2009 4:01 AM, PDT | From JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news

Say what you will about the Walt Disney Company (though if you haven't read Neil Gabler's excellent biography of the man, you really should next time you have the freedom to absorb about six hundred pages of something), but they absolutely know how to repackage their old materials into something new. Sometimes this means re-releasing the exact same product onto DVD not long after it has already been released in an entirely different box set, but hey, it's not like you don't know what you're getting.

The Walt Disney Animation Collection comes a few years on the heels of the Walt Disney Treasures Collection. Whereas those sets were both comprehensive (they each had two disks, with about twenty cartoons on each, full of extras and commentary by Leonard Maltin, came in a limited edition factory numbered tin) and were expensive (most of them were about thirty dollars), the Animation Collection

The Muppet Show: Lovable Loser Beaker Finally Comes Out on Top (Sort Of)

7 May 2009 12:01 PM, PDT | From TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news

After years of workplace abuse and torture, the lab assistant from Muppet Labs, Beaker, is finally getting some recognition. Who would have thought that a 22-year-old character who makes unintelligible noises would win an award for best music video?

Beaker first appeared in September 1977, during the second season of The Muppet Show. Speaking in high-pitched squeeks, the minor character often ended up being the victim of crazy experiments conducted by Doctor Bunsen Honeydew (Dave Goez). Shy and googly-eyed, Beaker was brought to life via the talents of larger-than-life puppeteer Richard Hunt, who also gave us Scooter, Janice, Statler, and Sweetums. Hunt tragically died in 1992 at the age of 40 from AIDS, less than two years after the loss of Jim Henson.

Since the loss of Hunt, the red-haired Muppet has been performed by Steve Whitmire. Whitmire performs characters like Rizzo the Rat and, since Henson's passing, Kermit the Frog and Sesame Street's Ernie.

Called The Power of the Dark Crystal, the project is based on the notes of the creators of the original 1982 film, including Jim Henson, who had wanted to do a sequel at the time, but found that the modest success of the first movie didn't allow it.

Fraggle Rock: New Spin-off Series to Feature the Doozers

8 April 2009 11:49 AM, PDT | From TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news

In some ways, the days of Fraggle Rock seem like such a thing of the past. It's been more than twenty years since the original Jim Henson series ended its run on HBO. Still, the happy little creatures have remained very popular in the Us as well as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2006, it was announced that the characters were being revived for an all-new feature film. That's still in the works and now, a new spin-off is making its way to television.

Fraggle Rock is the 1983 brainchild of innovative genius Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. In a world filled with lots of color and music, the Fraggles are happy creatures that live in an endless maze of underground caves. The series showcases the talents of Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Hans Helmut Dickow, Gerard Parkes, Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, Kathryn Mullen, Karen Prell, and Henson.
