Hitchcock Family Backs Fight to Save Art-Deco Movie Theater

10 March 2017 7:52 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A last-ditch effort has been staged to prevent further demolition of a 1926 Art-Deco movie theater in London that hosted the early films of Alfred Hitchcock, whose family is backing an attempt to save the historic venue.

Property developer Minerva, which is controlled by Delancey and Ares, is redeveloping the former Odeon Kensington cinema, previously known as The Kensington, as part of a larger mixed-use site, incorporating apartments, offices, stores and a multiplex.

A group of local residents in the theater’s neighborhood, Kensington in West London, has presented an alternative proposal to convert the site into a multi-arts center. The group, The Friends of The Kensington, are supported by Hitchcock’s family, including his daughter Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell, and showbiz professionals like actors Ian McKellen, Kristin Scott-Thomas, Charles Dance and Jeremy Irons, and director Richard Eyre.

The group has presented a series of photographs of the Art-Deco interior of »

Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo screens at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater this weekend as part of their Classic Film Series. It’s  Saturday, March 11th at 10:30am at the Hi-Pointe located at 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117. The film will be introduced by Harry Hamm, movie reviewer for Kmox. Admission is only $5

This gives us a perfect excuse to re-run this top ten list so here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are Alfred Hitchcock’s ten best films:

Frenzy

Frenzy, Hitchcock’s next to last feature film from 1972, represented a homecoming of sorts since it was the first film completely shot in his native England since his silents and early ” talkies ” in the 1930’s. By dipping into the then somewhat new territory of serial killers, he took full advantage of the new cinema freedoms and truly earned his ‘ R ‘ MPAA rating. »

Great Job, Internet!: Now you can see what the bedroom of Stranger Things’ Barb would look like

7 March 2017 5:07 AM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Ever wonder what the private spaces of some of your favorite TV and film characters would look like? Well, wonder no longer, as two women in Chicago with a yen for pop culture, a flair for design, and some time on their hands have created Imagined Interiors, a website where they craft rooms that reflect the personalities of fictional characters. So far their selections are very specific, to say the least, including Waiting For Guffman’s Libby Mae Brown’s pink bathroom—right down to a Skeet Ulrich snapshot, curlers, and giant can of Aqua Net—and the kitchen room table of The BirdsMelanie Daniels, where Tippi Hedren’s character would no doubt sip some relaxing tea at her lovely midcentury table and chairs before being attacked by feathers and beaks.

Best of all is the the bedroom of Stranger Things’ Barb, which features brightly colored sheets and an »

My Favorite Scene: Past and Current Producers Look Back on ‘Law & Order: Svu’

8 February 2017 9:18 AM, PST | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

No one loves a great scene more than the person who first dreamed it up -- the writer. We're asking iconic shows' creators and writers to tell Et all about getting to see their most cherished moment on their series make it from script to screen.

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will reach a major TV milestone when it airs its 400th episode, a feat only previously achieved by eight scripted series over the past four decades. While a lot of credit for the show’s success and stamina is given to the cast led by Mariska Hargitay, who has won an Emmy for playing Det. Olivia Benson, it’s hard to ignore the writing, which has earned several Edgar Allen Poe Award nominations over the course of its run.

Rotterdam Film Review: ‘Mansfield 66/67’

6 February 2017 3:43 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A true story based on rumor and hearsay” is how the filmmakers label “Mansfield 66/67,” a campy disquisition on the expropriation of Jayne Mansfield’s image in the final years of her life. Note the word “expropriation,” since the real Mansfield is singularly absent. Directors Todd Hughes and P. David Ebersole interview minor pop culture denizens with little insight; overreaching academics, who shoe-horn the star into their theories; and even Mamie Van Doren (less than illuminating). Fortunately John Waters and Mary Woronov have meaningful things to say about the Mansfield phenomenon, though everything is undercut by ultra-silly camp interludes featuring men and women in blonde wigs doing interpretive dances and such. There’s value in examining the myth of Mansfield and its impact, but here poor Jayne herself is lost. Queer fests and VOD will generate some attention.

‘Mansfield 66/67’ Trailer Examines Jayne Mansfield’s Interest in Satanic Rituals and Her Untimely Death

27 January 2017 9:29 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jayne Mansfield was an American actress, singer and entertainer who was one of Hollywood’s biggest sex symbols of the ‘50s and ‘60s. She was known for her hunger for publicity, her questionable affair with Anton Lavey, head of the Church of Satan, and her fatal car crash in 1967.

Now 50 years after her legendary accident, filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes have created “Mansfield 66/67,” a documentary about the last two years of Mansfield’s life and the speculation that her untimely death was caused by her alleged affair with Lavey and a curse that was placed on her.

The film is based on rumor and hearsay and asks the questions: “Was her life spinning out of control in the last two years of her life, or…did the devil make her do it?”

13 phobias on film for Friday the 13th13 phobias on film for Friday the 13thSasha James1/13/2017 9:05:00 Am

Did you know that “paraskavedekatriaphobia” is the fear of Friday the 13th?

Instead of the usual breakdown of the Friday the 13th movies that you’re probably used to, we decided to celebrate this Friday the 13th with a write-up of phobias and the movies that we most associate with them. Yes, we could have picked Arachnophobia for arachnophobia, but we tried to be at least a little bit more creative.

Check out our list below, and let us know if you can think up better movies to represent the below phobias.

Panphobia (Fear of Everything) – What About Bob?

You can’t talk about phobias without talking about Bob Wiley. In Frank Oz’s 90s classic What About Bob?, Bill Murray plays the multiphobic patient of Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). He’s afraid of everything: buses, »
