The success of "Star Wars" changed everything. While "2001" had been a giant hit a decade ago, most put it down to a fluke, but George Lucas' film suddenly proved that science fiction wasn't just for B-movies, but could be a licence to print money. Every studio in town were chasing the genre, but 20th Century Fox, who had distributed "Star Wars" had a head-start: they already had another space-set script in development, "Alien," by Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusett, Walter Hill and David Giler. They swiftly attached new helmer Ridley Scott to the project, and production got underway in the summer of 1978.
The result, released exactly two years after "Star Wars," on May 25th, 1979 (thirty-three years ago to the day) was an enduring classic, which serves as a high watermark of the both the sci-fi and horror genres, and launched Scott's career. Next week, the director will return to where »

Oliver Reed as Athos in The Three Musketeers & The Four Musketeers (Richard Lester, 1973/1974, UK):
These films were actually shot all at once but ultimately released as two separate films telling one long story. As the musketeer with a dark past, Oliver Reed provides a lot of the heart and soul in these very entertaining and well-made films. Technically, since we have to isolate one film for our fantasy nomination, it would be The Four Musketeers as his role is more prominent in that film. Reed’s reunion scene with Faye Dunaway’s Milady is superb as is Reed’s intense swordplay with an array of opponents including Christopher Lee. An underrated actor whose career was damaged by well-documented alcohol problems and notorious off-screen behavior, Reed still logged in some truly incredible acting performances over the course of his career. His portrayal of Athos is definitely one of them.

Just 10 of the hundreds of things we miss about The Sopranos…
1. The Writing / Direction
Each Sopranos episode felt like a fifty minute movie such was the strength of visual style, narrative arcs, characterization and performances. Has another show nailed it in such cinematic fashion before or since, week in week out?
From crisp dialogue, to innovative sequences with plentiful of subtle Mise-en-scene and classic film homages, to a soundtrack at times to die to (literally in some characters cases!). Often it would all come together in single scenes to striking effect none more so than Christopher’s death at the hands of Tony.
As the show creator David Chase surrounded himself with a tour de force of directing talents (Tim Van Patten, Alan Taylor, Allen Coulter and the late John Patterson) and immense writers (Terence Winter, Matthew Weiner, Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess) whom have now gone onto stamp their »

Kirsten Dunst/Camille On the Road poster If this isn't an all-out smile, I don't know what is. Those sparkling white teeth and healthy-looking gums belong to Kirsten Dunst. What a world! What a life! What a dentist!. I'm assuming Dunst's is the last On the Road "character" poster we're adding, as every major On the Road character has already gotten his/her poster. Dunst's actually came out before the ones for the film's three leads, Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart. We're just late posting it. In On the Road, Dunst plays Camille, the wife of Dean Moriarty (Hedlund), who leaves her behind to go on the road with the much younger Marylou (Stewart). Camille is based on Carolyn Cassady, the first wife of the sexually adventurous Neal Cassady (Moriarty in the novel/film). Sissy Spacek played Carolyn Cassady in John Byrum's Heart Beat, based on Cassady's 1976 book of memoirs, »

Upcoming movie The Whole Banana may feature elements of ancient Greek mythology but, as the whimsical title suggests, it's far removed from any of the other recent productions that have clashed their immortal titans on the big screen.
Instead of a gritty action film with furious gods and fire-spewing fiends locked in deadly battle, you will find a heartwarming tale of charm and humour that promises to show us what it means to be human.
Filming is under way in Los Angeles on the romantic comedy, whose all-star cast of movie and TV favourites includes Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) and Kristy Swanson (Buffy), with large cameo roles from Matthew Perry (Friends) and Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman). We previously reported that Resident Evil actress Sienna Guillory and the Farley brothers had also signed on to the production.
The story sees the Greek god Hermes (Sorbo) help a »

Last night, January 11th, Dread Central headed out to the Laemmle 4-Plex in Santa Monica for the Los Angeles premiere of the indie vampire film Midnight Son, which is set to make its debut on FEARnet later this month.
At the premiere we caught up with writer/director Scott Leberecht, who spoke with us about his excitement for Midnight Son's premiere, how he hopes his film reinvigorates the vampire genre past the Twilight fatigue of fans, and why the filmmaker will always call horror his home.
Dread also chatted with Midnight Son stars Zak Kilberg, Maya Parrish, Jo D. Jonz, and Larry Cedars about their feelings regarding Leberecht's story getting a release later this month as well as just what makes Midnight Son so different and why they think fans will enjoy the modern, unique vampire tale that was four years in the making.
