‘The Black Dahlia’: Brian De Palma’s Preposterous, Sordid Noir

24 August 2016 11:26 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I saw The Black Dahlia the day it opened in the fall of 2006. I can safely say it was one of my favorite moviegoing experiences. My husband and I saw it at AMC River East 21, which is one of Chicago’s largest multiplexes. The showing we went to was sold-out. There must have been 400 people there. The movie started, everyone was quiet and seemed excited for the celeb-packed whodunit we were about to see. Slowly, muffled giggles could be heard from different points of the theatre, mostly whenever Aaron Eckhart or Josh Hartnett mumbled “Fire and Ice.” By the middle of the movie, people were openly laughing at Hartnett’s silly, serious narration. Everyone went ballistic when, referring to the resemblance between Hilary Swank and Black Dahlia Elizabeth Short, Scarlett Johansson yells, “She looks like that dead girl!” We went even more ballistic when a woman sitting near me in the audience screamed, »

Here's a Necessary Reminder of Josh Hartnett's Hotness

21 July 2016 9:40 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Josh Hartnett, aka your early-2000s crush, disappeared from Hollywood for a few years, but he recently made a comeback with his TV series, Penny Dreadful. Frankly, we welcomed the return of the original squinty, goateed teen heartthrob, if only because it will give us another excuse to drool over the adorable star once again. He's perhaps wiser now that he's taken a conscious step back from the limelight, but he'll always be Trip Fontaine to us. To celebrate Mr. Hartnett's 38th birthday (which is today!) keep reading for all the reasons we crushed hard on him. »

11 Good Movies to Watch This Month on Hulu

8 July 2016 4:06 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Satire, serial killers, swords, and Shannyn Sossamon.

I’m here to tell you that there’s a cinematic streaming goldmine available on Hulu that includes recent hits, older classics, domestic releases, and foreign imports. It’s even home to hundreds of Criterion titles (for now). Sure there’s plenty of filler and seemingly thousands of titles I’ve never heard of before, but I’m not here to talk about possible gems like Wishmaster 3: Beyond the Gates of Hell… I’m here to recommend some good movies to watch this month on Hulu.

Pick of the Month: In the Loop (2009)

These are rough, troubling, and disappointing times we’re living in, and while it’s no cure, laughter is most definitely a medicine for the blues. To that end, Armando Iannucci’s In the Loop — a feature film riff on his series, The Thick of It — is like an epic dose of comical vitamin C. Incredibly »

Following the announcement earlier this week that the third season would be Penny Dreadful’s last, the show closes on a double bill of Perpetual Night and The Blessed Dark. Dracula feeding on Vanessa has, as foretold, brought an unholy fog down on the world that is killing London’s residents. The night creatures are also on the prowl and it is into this city that Ethan, Sir Malcolm and Kaetenay arrive to find Vanessa. They’re not alone in their efforts, joined by Catriona and Dr Seward. Frankenstein has to decide whether he will force the serum upon Lily whilst Dorian clears his house of her army. John Clare’s slice of domesticity proves to be all too brief and the »

Penny Dreadful: Creator-Cancelled! Season Three Ends the Showtime Series

[caption id="attachment_51109" align="aligncenter" width="533"] Penny Dreadful season three TV series finale photo: Patrick Redmond/Showtime.[/caption]

Spoilers ahoy! Penny Dreadful has been creator-cancelled after three seasons on Showtime. There will be no fourth season of Penny Dreadful coming next year. A major character died in last night's two-episode season three finale, "Perpetual Night," and "The Blessed Dark." What is more, the second hour closed with an end card literally spelling out, "The End," indicating the drama had drawn to a close. This was confusing, because the episode was only promoted as a "season finale." That promotional decision was made for story-telling reasons.

Creator Mike Logan and Showtime's David Nevins have confirmed the Penny Dreadful season three finale is also the TV series finale. That said, Logan does not rule out revisiting the story years from now, should Showtime so desire. The Penny Dreadful cast includes: Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Harry Treadaway, »

‘Penny Dreadful’: Why This Great Series Finale Shouldn’t Start a Trend

Penny Dreadful” creator John Logan is an expert at endings. From big, sweeping dramas like “Gladiator” and “The Last Samurai,” to ongoing stories like “Skyfall” and the first two seasons of “Penny Dreadful,” Logan is a writer who always seems to hit his mark in the end.

That’s why it comes as no surprise that Sunday night’s Season 3 finale of “Penny Dreadful,” “The Blessed Dark,” was a terrific episode of television – with one glaring exception.

What more could one ask for in a series finale? Simple: that we knew going in it was a series finale.

Creator John Logan and Showtime’s David Nevins on the Decision to End ‘Penny Dreadful’

20 June 2016 8:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This post contains spoilers about the season three finale of “Penny Dreadful.”

Two words appeared on the screen at the end of “The Blessed Dark,” the season three finale of the Victorian horror series “Penny Dreadful”: “The End.” As it turns out, the season finale of the Showtime drama (which was recapped here) was also its series finale. Vanessa Ives died in the last episode of season three, and the show will not return.

Variety spoke to Showtime president David Nevins and “Penny Dreadful” creator John Logan about why they made the decision to end the show after making a grand total of 27 episodes.

“That’s where television is now,” Nevins said. “We don’t have to make seven seasons for the sake of making seven seasons. Some shows are built for that, and some shows aren’t.”
