John Amos on Mary Tyler Moore, Racism on Set, and Playing the First Black Family Man

13 October 2015 1:35 PM, PDT | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

John Amos is one of those actors fortunate enough to have more than one iconic role on his résumé. His two biggest parts were as patriarch James Evans Sr. on Good Times and as the elder Kunta Kinte on Roots. But he first won fame with a smaller, yet still enduring, part: Gordy the weatherman on CBS’s The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Amos appeared roughly a dozen times over the course of the show’s first three seasons, and even though he left to take a regular gig on Good Times in 1974, his character was vital enough that he returned with his own spotlight episode during the final season of Mary Tyler Moore. Tonight Amos can be seen talking about his experiences on the show, alongside Betty White, Valerie Harper, Ed Asner, Van Dyke, and others, as part of Mary Tyler Moore: A Celebration, airing at 8 p.m. »

Ken Howard Re-Elected SAG-AFTRA President

20 August 2015 7:36 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ken Howard has been re-elected as SAG-AFTRA president for a two-year term following a spirited challenge by Patricia Richardson with 53.7% of the vote to Richardson’s 46.3%.

But Howard’s running mate, Jenny O’Hara, was defeated by stunt performer Jane Austin for the secretary-treasurer slot as Austin won with 52.7%. Current secretary-treasurer Amy Aquino, who had Howard’s running mate in three previous elections, opted not to seek re-election to the post.

Turnout was just under 22%, a typical rate in elections for the performer union. Of the 139,313 eligible voters mailed ballots  on July 21, a total of 30,263 voted.

Howard, 71, led the moderate Unite for Strength faction that has been in control of the performers union for the past six years. Richardson headed the self-styled progressives of the Membership First faction.

Howard became the 25th and final SAG president in 2009 and was re-elected in 2011 on a platform urging the merger of SAG and AFTRA. »

Blu-ray Review – Blame It on Rio (1984)

10 August 2015 1:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Blame It on Rio, 1984.

Directed by Stanley Donen.

Starring Michael Caine, Joseph Bologna, Michelle Johnson, Demi Moore, Valerie Harper and José Lewgoy.

Synopsis:

A married middle-aged man begins an affair with his best friend’s teenage daughter whilst on holiday in Rio.

Michael Caine is an unusual choice for a romantic lead but Blame It on Rio is not a romantic film. It pretends to be one – and one of the main characters would probably believe it to be, given her immaturity when it comes to relationships – but it isn’t romantic; it’s dirty, seedy and, by modern standards at least, a little bit wrong. However, it is also great fun and, if you are of a certain age, more than likely your entry into the grown up world of sex comedies as the film features boobs, boobs and more boobs, with Michael Caine getting an eyeful of most »
