'Spartacus' Gladiators Unleash Hell On Romans (Video)

21 December 2011 7:54 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Nothing gets under the skin of a Roman aristocrat like "the festering disease of rebellion."

Gaius Claudius Glaber, the man who offers that assessment in the exclusive "Spartacus: Vengeance" trailer above, is not a happy man.

The ambitious Glaber was more or less minding his own business (i.e., conspiring and maneuvering to get ahead in the high society of ancient Rome), when a gladiator named Spartacus went and ruined everything for him. Instead of rising through the ranks of powerful Romans, Glaber (Crag Parker) is stuck cleaning up the bloody mess made by the escaped slave and growing band of revenge-minded followers. No wonder Glaber sounds a little cranky.

As the show's fans saw at the end of 2009's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," the title gladiator and his fellow arena fighters rebelled against their owner, Quintus Batiatus (John Hannah), killing almost everyone in his villa and taking off ... to do what, »

[First Look] Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana In ‘The Words’; Denzel Washington In ‘Safe House’; Selma Blair and Amy Smart In ‘Columbus Circle’

1 November 2011 10:50 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I’m not sure how a movie starring Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana went completely past my radar, but a recent press release has brought The Words to my attention. Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal directed the drama that sees Cooper play “a writer who, at the peak of his literary success, discovers the price he must pay for stealing another man’s work.” The above photo doesn’t tell you that — but you know they’re in distress!

The film has a pretty strong cast, with Jeremy Irons, Dennis QuaidOlivia Wilde, Ben Barnes, John HannahNora Arnezeder, and J.K. Simmons all contributing. Not much else is out there on The Words right now, but the premise and assembly of actors have me a little interested. It’s currently without a distributor; I see it getting picked up soon, though, if the cast can excite buyers.

Exclusive: Ben Barnes Talks The Seventh Son and The Chronicles of Narnia

1 November 2011 1:21 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

I recently got the chance to speak with actor Ben Barnes, who was promoting his new movie Killing Bono, which hits theaters November 4. We also talked about several of his upcoming projects, including The Seventh Son. Here's what he had to say about the Sergey Bodrov adaptation, which begins production in March.

"I think The Seventh Son starts shooting in March. At the moment, I hear it's going to be Vancouver and China. I've seen some of the artwork for it, and it looks like nothing I've ever seen. Jeff Bridges is one of my favorite actors in the history of ever. After working with Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, and previously I've worked with Colin Firth, and working with Jeff Bridges next year, I'm surrounding myself with my idols. There's no better way to learn than that, really. I don't know how I've managed to get here."

Jenna Elfman to Join Damages for Season 5

24 October 2011 12:32 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

TVLine is reporting that Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg, Accidentally on Purpose) has signed on to the final season of DirecTV's Damages, which is set to air next summer. Elfman will be playing a bank employee that may start leaking some of the shady affairs her employers are involved in. She'll join previously announced season five guest stars Ryan Phillippe (Flags of Our Fathers) and John Hannah (The Mummy).

Elfman doesn't have extensive experience in dramatic television, having only a couple of guest roles (Murder One, Brothers & Sisters) to her credit. For those who may be a little unsure as to this casting, need I remind you that Damages has a history of taking primarily comedic actors (Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Ted Danson) and allowing them to stretch their wings, culminating in awards attention and significant praise. This could be Elfman's chance to really throw us for a loop and show »

The former Dharma & Greg star is joining another major new addition to the show, recently cast Ryan Phillippe. Elfman will play an investment bank employee troubled by her company’s conduct. When she approaches Channing McClaren (Phillippe), the iconoclastic founder of a website devoted to corporate and government transparency, it lays the foundation for the case that will pit Patty Hewes (Close) and Ellen Parsons (Byrne) against each other. Also recently cast as a recurring on Damages‘ fifth season, set to air next year, is John Hannah (Spartacus) as McClaren’s loyal adviser and protector. Blu-ray Review: Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena – Violent, Hedonistic, Gripping

18 October 2011 3:03 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Spartacus: Blood and Sand was a series that I was ready to laugh at dismissively, calling it a TV version of the similarly stylised 2006 film, 300. However, when the series actually came out, it was surprisingly watchable. Once I was done leering at the series’ comical excesses of sex and violence, I found myself captivated by an well-developed story of intrigue, greed and betrayal.

Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a prequel series to Blood and Sand and is available now on Blu-ray. Set in the same universe of bloodlust and hedonism, but without the titular character, this series revolves around the House of Batiatus and the school of gladiators trained within its grounds.

There are essentially two parallel plotlines in Gods of the Arena. One focuses on Quintus Batiatus (John Hannah) as he attempts to balance the House’s reputation with gaining favour from all the right people, »
