‘The Bell Jar’: Kirsten Dunst’s Entire Career Has Been Leading Up To Her Feature Directorial Debut – Girl Talk

21 July 2016 8:38 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.

In the spring of 1999, Sofia Coppola’s feature directorial debut, a big screen version of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel “The Virgin Suicides,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. A delicate, deeply feeling and achingly human portrait of suburban ennui and teenage depression, the film was anchored by a performance by a then-17-year-old Kirsten Dunst. As Lux Lisbon, the prettiest and wildest and most broken of the five Lisbon sisters that the film so intimately chronicles, Dunst was tasked with straddling the gap between deep pain and flickering hope.

The film follows the Lisbons after their youngest sister, Cecilia, twice attempts suicide, completing the act on her second try, all during party thrown by her terrified parents in hopes of cheering her up enough to keep her alive. The Lisbons, by and large, are suffocated by their »

Kirsten Dunst To Make Directorial Debut With The Bell Jar, Dakota Fanning On Board

20 July 2016 3:06 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Deadline brings word that Kirsten Dunst is set to make her first foray behind the camera with The Bell Jar, a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name that has already secured Dakota Fanning to headline.

Johnson, who has lined up roles in Brimstone and Ewan McGregor’s crime drama American Pastoral (which, incidentally, also marks McGregor’s directorial debut), will lead the feature film as Esther Greenwood. Nellie Kim, meanwhile, penned the script opposite Dunst.

For those unfamiliar with Plath’s source material, The Bell Jar is set against a post-war 1950s, where Greenwood secures an internship with a high-profile magazine in New York City. However, a crippling mental illness begins to take hold as Greenwood returns home to Boston.

This isn’t the first time that The Bell Jar has found its way onto the silver screen; in 1979, a movie adaptation placed Marilyn Hassett in the lead role, »

Kirsten Dunst is set to make her feature film directorial debut with an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar.” Dakota Fanning will star in the independent drama with plans for a first-quarter start of production.

Fanning will play the lead role of Esther Greenwood in the pic, based on Plath’s 1963 novel. Dunst has adapted the script with Nellie Kim.

Priority Pictures optioned remake rights from Studio Canal. “The Bell Jar” was made into a feature film in 1979.

Priority’s Lizzie Friedman, Karen Lauder and Greg Little will produce alongside Fanning and Echo Lake Entertainment’s Brittany Kahan. Celine Rattray is executive producing.

In the book, Greenwood takes an internship at a magazine in New York City, and then begins to suffer a mental breakdown when she returns home to Boston.

The novel is the only book ever published by Plath, who committed suicide in 1963.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Worried About Harry Styles Appearing In Dunkirk

29 May 2016 3:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

This week, Neil Calloway looks forward to the former boy band star appearing in Christopher Nolan’s next film…

This week the first set photos of Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming war film Dunkirk emerged, as well as the news that Tom Hardy had signed up to appear in the film. He joins a cast that includes Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy and Harry Styles.

There was some dissent when Styles – better known as a member of One Direction than an actor – was announced as part of the cast. It’s an unusual move, but it’s exactly the sort of thing that Christopher Nolan does.

While Nolan obviously has a regular troupe of actors he uses in different films – Murphy, Hardy, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway and Christian Bale have all appeared in his films more than once – he also makes some unexpected casting choices.

Nolan has a habit of resurrecting the »

Leonardo DiCaprio Flashes His Abs and Checks Out Girls in Central Park

11 May 2016 10:15 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted taking a stroll with a pack of pals - including longtime friend Lukas Haas - in NYC on Monday. The Oscar winner kept a low profile in his usual newsboy cap and jeans, and at one point, he lifted up his shirt to give a flash of his abs. Leo also took a moment to check out some female park visitors laying on the grass. Leo has been easing back into his normal routine since winning his first Academy Award back in February, but he's definitely still keeping busy; since the big night, he's traveled to Indonesia to do charity work for his environmental campaign, nabbed a spot on the Time 100 list, and popped up at the Paris Agreement as a Un Ambassador of Peace. Keep reading to see Leo's day in the city, then look back on his extensive dating history. »

Leonardo DiCaprio Tried to Go Unnoticed at This Swanky Gala, but We Saw Him Anyway

13 April 2016 11:36 AM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

A dapper-looking Leonardo DiCaprio popped up at the Foundation Fighting Blindness World Gala at Cipriani in NYC on Tuesday night. The Oscar winner, who recently returned from a philanthropic journey to the Indonesian rainforest, appeared to have skipped the star-studded red carpet but was his usual laid-back self while checking out the show from his table. Speaking of laid-back, Leo was nearly unrecognizable while attending a New York Islanders hockey game with his BFFs Lukas Haas and Kevin Connolly in Brooklyn, NY, earlier this week; he tried his best to go incognito under a hat but was eventually featured on the stadium's giant screens. Even before his guys' night out, Leo made headlines after his text messages were read aloud by Jennifer Lopez during her hilarious Carpool Karaoke excursion with James Corden. See Leo's latest outing above, then experience what it might be like to go on a date with him. »

The Act of Seeing in "Witness"

12 April 2016 5:43 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Peter Weir's Oscar nominated Witness (1985) was not chosen for our Best Shot series for its title, though that's as apt a logline for this series as any. The title refers to young Samuel Lapp (Lukas Hass, in a sterling child performance) but it neatly doubles as a surprisingly hushed command to the audience out there in the dark.

Lukas Haas figures it out at the police station

The story may spring from an abrupt violent murder in a public bathroom which Samuel sees, wide-eyed, from a bathroom stall but there's very little about the hit drama that is as in your face as its story beats and genre might otherwise suggest. From its earliest longshot of Amish villagers coming into view above a field of grass, to its sublimely casual farewell of its last shot (with two men crossing paths outside the home of the woman they both love »

Leonardo DiCaprio's 'P-ssy Posse' Is Now Apparently 'The Wolf Pack'

3 March 2016 6:40 AM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

You may have wondered what Leonardo DiCaprio did after his big Oscars win. Clearly, he partied -- we're talking about Leo -- but based on reports from Page Six and The New York Daily News, he really bro-ed out with his boys, as opposed to just magically summoning a dozen new Victoria's Secret models. (That may have happened later, though.)

"He ended up at Ago — rolled in around midnight with his whole pack of boys," one partygoer told the Daily News, saying Leo met up with actors Lukas Haas, Tobey Maguire, Vincent Laresca, and nightclub kingpin Richie Akiva.

In the '90s, Leo's crew was known as the "Pussy Posse," but perhaps because of "The Wolf of Wall Street" or maybe some attempt at evolving past that alliterative but sexist title, they have supposedly changed the name of their boy band. That's what another partygoer told the NY Daily News, »

Movie Review – The Revenant (2016)

24 January 2016 6:45 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Revenant, 2016.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson, Paul Anderson, Lukas Haas, Brendan Fletcher, Forrest Goodluck, and Grace Dove.

Synopsis:

In the 1820s, a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling.

You would assume that with a production history of being passed between numerous directors, taking over a decade to complete, that The Revenant might take on a miss-cut mosaic of scenes moulded to separate styles, with the thumbprint of each director clearly detectable in every segmented scene. However, The Revenant is anything but. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film is a breath-taking and intimate experience. Its tactile approach to cinematography detains its audience forcing them to share in every experience its characters enter into. The film’s eclectic raw qualities keep the narrative consistently captivating and solely unique. »
