In 1972, he starred in an unsold pilot called "The Bar" about a bartender, played by Fred Gwynne, who got involved with his patrons problems - usually not to their benefit. The pilot was recast and became a summer replacement series "The Corner Bar" starring Gabriel Dell.

(1981), Gwynne was initially not interested. However, his second wife suggested that he ask the network for a large paycheck which they will probably refuse. However, when NBC surprisingly agreed to his demands, he accepted the role.
