The Last Tycoon Review: Cut! Rewrite! Amazon's Dreary Showbiz Drama Belongs on the Cutting Room Floor

19 July 2017 9:59 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

There are quite a few puzzling aspects to The Last Tycoon, but the biggest head-scratcher of all is: If your studio executive looks like Matt Bomer, why not just put him in all your movies?

Bomer’s matinee-idol looks are certainly put to good use in Amazon’s retro Hollywood drama (debuting Friday, July 28) — he looks damn good in a tailored suit and fedora — but like a lot of The Last Tycoon, the substance falls far short of the image. Plagued by corny dialogue and clumsy plotting, this ambitious series aims for the stars but plays more like a first-weekend flop. »

The Last Tycoon Season 1 Review

19 July 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

“The picture is the baby,” is the driving mantra of Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer), the titular character in Amazon’s latest serial drama The Last Tycoon, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s unfinished novel of the same name. The show follows the ups and downs of Stahr as he tries to protect that baby, sometimes at the cost of his own soul. A successful young producer in the late 1930s who runs the lot of Brady-American Pictures with an iron fist wrapped in a silk glove, Stahr has to navigate the demands of starlets, rival producers, and his pool of screenwriters while dealing with his acerbic boss Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer), his friend and occasional antagonist.

Stahr is still reeling from the loss of his wife Minna Davis (Jessica De Gouw), one of Brady-American’s biggest stars. Now he’s out to make a movie about her life, but faces »

Is Suits Romance Right or Wrong? Did Bachelorette Rejects Exist Before? Are Emmy Ballots Pre-Filled? And More Qs!

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including American Ninja Warrior, The Bachelorette, Suits and Zoo!

1 | Is it kind of a bummer that Killjoys basically “recast” Defiance‘s Stephanie Leonidas in the role of Clara? (Or can the Hackmod easily get her “old” face back?)

2 | What hallucinogenics were circulating at CBS that someone pitched (and another someone signed off on) “Giant Candy Crush meets obstacle course meets Big Brother/Survivor?”

Newswire: Kelsey Grammer to play Kristen Bell’s dad in new Netflix comedy

13 July 2017 5:43 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer are in negotiations to star in a new Netflix comedy called Like Father. The movie is the directorial debut of Lauren Miller Rogen, who also wrote it, and it’s about a “workaholic woman” who gets left at the alter and goes on a honeymoon cruise by herself, only to bump into the “equally workaholic” father who left her and her mom when she was a kid. Given the title, she’ll presumably realize that she has become just like her shitty father, and she’ll learn some important lessons about the importance of family or whatever. The Hollywood Reporter story also describes it as a “low-budget comedy,” so Bell and Grammer probably won’t visit too many exotic locations on that cruise. »

Kristen Bell and Kelsey Grammer are teaming up to star in Like Father, a Netflix comedy feature that is serving as the directorial debut of Lauren Miller Rogen.

The script, written by Miller Rogen, centers on a workaholic woman who is left at the altar by her groom-to-be and winds up on her honeymoon cruise with the one person she thought she’d never see: her equally workaholic father, who left her and her mother when she was 5 because he believed family life was a hindrance to his career.

Bell and Grammer are in negotiations to play the daughter-father duo.

How MGM Birthed ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ for TV

12 July 2017 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The journey that “The Handmaid’s Tale” took from page to screen is a prime example of how MGM Television aims to compete in the scripted TV arena against its larger studio competitors.

Steve Stark, MGM’s president of television production and development since 2011, shepherded “Handmaid’s” through multiple networks and two showrunners before the series became a triumph for Hulu earlier this year. MGM has the resources of a major studio but takes a boutique approach in development, as it also demonstrated with its unconventional approach to the TV adaptation of FX’s “Fargo.”

“There’s a producing component to what we offer (talent) that is important. We don’t rush,” Stark told Variety. “It’s like we’re doing features in television. We don’t mind taking our time to make it right. We’re a more nurturing place in that way.”

The development of “Handmaid’s” began not long after Stark joined MGM in »
