Bad Lieutenants and Magnificent Sevens – the golden rules of the cinematic remake

31 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Magnificent Seven, The Ring, Psycho, The Preacher's Wife – some remakes are an improvement, some are an abysmal waste of time. Joe Queenan judges the pack

In 1992, Abel Ferrara made a very dark, very depressing movie called Bad Lieutenant. In it, Harvey Keitel played a morally bankrupt police officer who seeks redemption by investigating the rape of a nun who refuses to bring charges against her assailant, turning the Bad Lieutenant into the Mad Lieutenant. The film did nothing at the box office, and is remembered mostly because it is the motion picture in which Keitel shows off his penis. There was at the time no great demand for Keitel – a fine actor, but never a matinee idol – to show off his penis, even though it was a very splendid penis indeed, nor has there been any grassroots groundswell of support for this sort of thing afterwards.

2009 Celebrity Baby Name Roundup

This was a year that saw fewer attention-seeking antics and more real creativity in celebrity parents’ choice of names. Celebrity parents are growing up and becoming more sophisticated in their taste in baby names, just as they did in their taste for fashion. Oscar gowns used to be gaudy, tasteless get-ups designed for maximum exposure of all kinds; now they’re evidence of real individual style. So too with celebrity baby names, many of which are starting to show genuine refined taste and discernment and seem designed to enhance the child’s life.

'How I Met Your Mother's' Alyson Hannigan's Twit Pic -- 'Buffy' stuff everywhere!

"How I Met Your Mother" star Alyson Hannigan's Twit Pic account is awesome.

Hannigan tweeted earlier this month, "If Eliza and Sarah were combined into one person..." and posted this picture on Twit Pic:

We have no idea who the girl is or why she's on the set of "How I Met Your Mother," but Alyson sure has hit the nail on the head with her assessment. That girl may lean a bit more towards Faith but she certainly could be a Sarah Michelle Gellar-Eliza Dushku hybrid.

Joss Whedon, are you getting this? A "Buffy" spinoff wherein slayers Buffy Summers and Faith Lehane are magically merged? You tested the switching-places waters with "Who Are You?," we think it could work!

Alyson also posted this picture with the caption "Here's a pic from my seat at the Emmys." Awww, "Buffy" and "Angel" reunion!

Deconstructing the decade from 'Buffy' and beyond: Zap2it Hanh's favorite episodes

25 December 2009 10:30 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Zap2it's favorite TV episodes of the decade series continues with my picks for what moved me in the 2000s.

Let me preface my list with a shout out to my colleague Rick, who kicked off the series with numerous excellent examples, ranging from "The Wire" to "Freaks and Geeks." I actually agreed with quite a number of his selections, but since this is a very personal endeavor, full of unfounded opinions, naturally I must include some episodes I feel he overlooked or at least didn't value as much as I.

Case in point: Joss Whedon. Really, Rick? How could an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" not even make your main list and only warrant an "also" mention? Hmph.

My list:

"The Body" ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer")

Although "Hush" and its creepy Gentlemen freaked me out (and earned "Buffy" its only writing Emmy nom), it aired in December 1999, just »

Brittany Murphy Rocks Out With Jack Black And Sarah Michelle Gellar At The 2002 MTV Movie Awards

In 2002, stars Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar hosted the annual MTV Movie Awards. They were a bit nervous starting things off, so they called in a couple of their celebrity pals to help out, including Andy Garcia, Andy Dick and... Brittany Murphy. As we take some time today to remember Murphy's contributions to film and pop culture, we look back to this moment and remember a happier time for the actress, when she was fresh off the success of "8 Mile." Crack a grin as you watch this little bite from '02...

Brittany, your most important teacher misses you dearly and cannot believe you were taken so soon.

Brittany Murphy’s former acting coach, Andrew Magarian, speaks to HollywoodLife.com about his student’s sudden death on Dec. 20, and remembers her as a star pupil with an infectious personality.

“Brittany had a lot to offer. She carried a special energy and was a true free spirit,” says Margarian, who has also mentored Adam Brody, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Kirsten Dunst, tells us.

The two began working together when Brittany was just 13 and developed a close relationship that carried on for more than a decade. Magarian last saw Brittany during the Uptown Girls press junket in 2003.

“Brittany was a really sweet girl,” he remembers. “It’s always tragic to lose [someone you care about].”

Dollhouse 2.10 "The Attic" Recap

21 December 2009 1:49 AM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Welcome to" The Attic"! Prepare to have your mind frakked…

What could possibly be one of the most complicated episodes of Dollhouse to date in terms of plot twists and technical jargon, "The Attic" delivered… and left me scratching my head. Bad thing? Hell No!!!! Let's get to it!

The Set Up

We pick up right were we left off with Echo being tended to by a female Attic representative, who is injecting tubes and wires into Echo. When the attendant leaves, Echo starts to spasm and flatlines!!!! When the female representative returns with another representative, the two remove the tubes and Saran Wrap from Echo and she awakes and dispatches both of them quickly. She breaks out her room and attacks the first person she sees for info on the whereabouts of Victor and Sierra. The guy tells her that they use real names in the Attic, which for Echo is Caroline Farrell. »

Yes Man (Peyton Reed, 2008)

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

The Golden Compass (Chris Weitz, 2007)

Lindsay Lohan Hosts Holiday Party, Sarah Michelle Gellar Caught in the Crossfire

Lindsay Lohan can't do anything quietly, and that includes hosting a holiday party for the staff of her 6126 leggings line. It was paparazzi madness when she showed up at Beverly Hills eatery E. Baldi around 2 p.m. yesterday. "That gray really brings out of the color of your eyes!" one pap yelled, although L.L. was wearing sunglasses. And for once, it wasn't really her fault. LiLo didn't answer any questions about her recent trip to India. She's also been uncharacteristically quiet on her Twitter for the past few days...what gives? Top Ten High School Horror Movies: 1996 - Present

4 December 2009 12:38 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This past fall saw the debut of the supernatural horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body, and with the film's Blu-ray and DVD release being only a few weeks away (December 29th), I thought it might be interesting to take a look back at some of the most successful high school horror films that have been released over the past 10 to 15 years.

Jennifer’s Body is a slick production, equipped with fresh young stars, a hip soundtrack, and, of course, strings of "clever" dialogue. And that’s the criteria I’ve chosen to adhere to when working on this top ten list. Some of the films included here aren’t necessarily my favorites, but they’ve been impactful and deserve the call-out all the same. At the risk of spoiling some of the choices, I chose 1996 as the eligibility year for the simple reason that it was the beginning of the glossy, »

10 Examples Of A Pulse In The Modern Slasher

3 December 2009 8:17 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After the 80's passed it seemed that - for the most part - the slasher craze had finally come to a rest. Successful franchises like Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th had been siphoned beyond emptiness and any intrigue the sub genre once offered appeared dead and buried. Then 1996 rolled around and Wes Craven, Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell reminded us that good directing, storytelling, and acting is alive and well with the surprise hit Scream.

The next couple of years provided a massive batch of 'fresh' copycats and a handful of Scream sequels. Very few of any are remotely near noteworthy (quick nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer in order to avoid the onslaught of negative commentary from the obsessed Sarah Michelle Gellar fans out there J ), though Scream 2 remains a memorable franchise installment based solely on the unexpected axing of series favorite Randy (Jamie Kennedy) Meeks. »

Hannigan: 'Buffy Movie Is A Mistake'

3 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Former Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Alyson Hannigan has blasted plans for a big-screen spin-off of the show, branding the movie "a big mistake".

The franchise began with the 1992 film of the same name, starring Kristy Swanson, which spawned the small-screen series with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead role.

The cult TV show came to an end in 2003 and is set to be rebooted with a new film featuring a brand new vampire slayer, and without any input from former lead writer Joss Whedon.

Hannigan is adamant none of the main castmembers would sign up for the project unless Whedon was in charge, and she fears movie bosses are heading for a flop.

She tells Cinemablend, "It's a big mistake. I mean if Joss isn't involved, it's only the title. (I wouldn't go back) not without Joss. Joss is the only reason that we would go back. I mean, it's just ridiculous to think of that TV show without Joss. That's just silly to me... And all the fans know that, too, so I don't know what they're thinking."

Hannigan's former Buffy co-star Anthony Head has also condemned plans for a second big-screen outing, previously stating the new film will be like "watching a car wreck." »

Adapt This: 'Army@Love' By Rick Veitch & Gary Erskine

18 November 2009 12:41 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

The Story: "Army@Love" by Rick Veitch (W/A) & Gary Erskine (A) - DC/Vertigo

What It's About: A New Jersey National Guard unit in the fictional country of Afbaghistan becomes a petri dish for new military marketing and morale-boosting strategies, mostly thanks to the office for Motivation and Morale (Momo), run by a toothy-grinned man named Col. Healey. In an over-the-top acidic satire about modern warfare and the efforts that drive military PR and recruitment, Veitch's story follows two soldiers, Flabbergast and Switzer, who get frisky in a war zone and christen their new derivative of the Mile High Club to be the Hot Zone Club.

Affairs, political power plays and absurd ringtones pepper the series as it explores the unsavory overlap that can occur amid corporate interests, modern war and media over-saturation.

Why It Works: "Army@Love" is an R-rated modern update of "M*A*S*H" for the age of cell phones, »

I’m not going to lie, I typically hate box sets. They’re more often than not, a dumping ground for DVD’s that have spent one too many years collecting dust in some old warehouse that their distributers are just a little too eager to get off the shelves. You go to your local video retailer or Amazon.com and think “Awesome, John Carpenter box set. Surely it’s packed with the original Halloween, The Thing, and Escape From New York.” Much to your dismay, you come to realize you’re stuck with Ghosts Of Mars (featuring the acting prowess of Ice Cube), that damned Village remake, and Escape From L.A.. Moreover even if you happen to like one or two of the flicks in the set, you’re bound to hate the rest; that is to say, if you could even identify what the, often bottom barrel, »
