Nick Cassavetes likes plucking heartstrings and he’s not afraid to dig into your chest to do so. Unfortunately, the digging is sort of a laborious process and it can take Cassavetes an hour or two to even scratch the surface. Maybe you were swept away by his romantic tale of Alzheimers-afflicted love in The Notebook? It did have a surprisingly strong cast (Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling and James Garner) and whether you like the movie or not, chances are your body either produces a healthy share of estrogen and you loved the film or your body doesn’t but someone from the first category insisted you watch it. Yet, he also directed Alpha Dog, so his tendencies towards emotionally manipulative clearly aren’t his only option. My Sister’s Keeper, however, plays directly into his manipulative side; if you’re a crier then you’ll get that cathartic sobbing »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

People always seem to sneer at Mel Gibson's Maverick, but I've always had a special place for it on my DVD shelf. As television remakes go, Maverick is pretty slick and clever, and gently spoofs the Western genre while remaining true to its 1960s roots. (If you own the special 2-disc copy of Unforgiven, you need to go watch the Maverick episode that's included as a bonus feature. It's hilarious! Also, James Garner was a dreamboat.)
Nevertheless, Maverick threatened to be too silly for its own good when it decided to capitalize on Richard Donner's friendships and franchises, and invite Danny Glover in for a cameo. (There's also a Goonie making a cameo in his gang, see if you can spot him.) This is the kind of wink-wink-nudge-nudge joke that should completely annoy me, but it doesn't here. Maybe my love of Lethal Weapon runs too deep, or »

In 1964's The Americanization of Emily, James Garner plays Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Madison, a "dog robber" serving under a Navy general. His job is to procure whatever his boss needs, be it booze, food, cigarettes, or female companionship, and he's very good at what he does. A proud coward, Madison's figured out that the best way to avoid being killed in a war is to stay as far away from the fighting as possible. Until, that is, he ends up at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion as part of a PR stunt, and ends up an inadvertent hero.
Written by Paddy Chayevsky (Network, Altered States) and directed by Arthur Hiller, the story focuses on Charlie's love affair with a London war widow (Julie Andrews) who's lost her husband, brother and father in the war and finds Charlie's avowed cowardice encouraging -- she can't bear the thought of losing another loved one, »

Ontario lawyer David Shore, who created House for Universal, is about to develop a "new" series—a remake of the '70s detective drama The Rockford Files. According to Variety, Shore, who will develop the re-imagined series along with Steve Carell's Carousel Television, NBC and Universal Media Studios, said he will keep the basic premise/character of the original TV series.
Shore said as a fan of the show himself, he’s well aware of how high the bar is set for the remake.
"It’s one of the shows that made me want to become a writer," Shore said. "I had no interest in adapting any old stuff, but this was the one exception."
Shore is just starting to think about an approach to bring The Rockford Files into the present day, but he intends to stick with the basic foundation of a private eye in L.A. »

NBC, Universal Media Studios and Steve Carell's Carousel Television have signed House creator-executive producer David Shore to shepherd a remake of the classic 1974-80 crime drama The Rockford Files. Rockford, which earned the Emmy for drama series in 1978, starred James Garner as the title character, an ex-con private eye who lived in a trailer in Malibu. The series proved to be a training ground for a number of future TV heavyweights, including scribes David Chase (The Sopranos) and Chas. Floyd Johnson (Magnum P.I.) and actor Tom Selleck. Shore's just starting to think about an approach to bring The Rockford Files into the present day, but he intends to stick with the basic foundation of a private eye in L.A. just trying to make a living. The idea for a Rockford revival came from Carousel, which inquired about the rights to the Universal TV property after Carousel cut »

In a story from Variety NBC, Universal Media Studios and Steve Carell's Carousel Television have picked David Shore (House) to bring about a redo of the The Rockford Files.
The original show starred James Garner and had Stephen J. Cannell as its writer-producer. Garner played an ex-con private eye who ran his business out of a trailer in Malibu. His job put him face to face with some of the sleaziest and sexiest people La had to offer.
"It's one of the shows that made me want to become a writer," Shore stated. "I had no interest in adapting any old stuff, but this was the one exception."
The plan is to bring the show into the 21st Century but stick with the same motifs of the original.
"What makes Rockford timeless is that he's vulnerable, he's flawed. He's used to hustling and getting hustled," Shore offered. "Sometimes he's »

Jacob at FoodNetworkAddict.com has come up with five good reasons why he thinks Melissa Darabian will win The Next Food Network Star when the competition wraps next Sunday. His points are well thought out, especially the one that suggests that Melissa's journey on the show has been dramatically edited to make her seem like an underdog who has now emerged as a dynamic player. However, I'm banking on Jeffrey Saad to win. Here's my five reasons:
1. The likability factor
Since the opening episode, there hasn't been a more attractive and likable competitor on The Next Food Network Star. Jeffrey makes viewers feel comfortable, like a Tom Selleck or James Garner, and when you're talking about TV personalities, that's the most important asset. Jeffrey would be welcomed on TVs in living rooms -- and kitchens -- around the country. »

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced the CGI-animated otherworldly adventure Battle for Terra will extend to Blu-ray Disc and DVD on September 22. In Battle for Terra, when environmental destruction forces people to leave Earth, the remaining survivors rocket through space on a quest to find a new home. At first it seems like the beautiful planet Terra is the perfect place to take over. But when a fighter pilot (Luke Wilson) crashes on Terra, he forms an unlikely friendship with a rebellious Terrian girl named Mala (Evan Rachel Wood). Now, putting aside their differences, the young heroes join forces to protect Terra from destruction in this exciting, action-filled sci-fi adventure. Also lending their voices are Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover and James Garner. Lionsgate has yet to reveal technical disc information but I do have a partial list of bonus features to share. None of these are expected to be Blu-ray exclusives. »
