15 years ago today: ‘Legally Blonde’ opened in theaters

13 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters. »

'Twin Peaks': Robert Forster discusses his role as Sheriff Truman for the first time

14 June 2016 3:50 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

With the now-retired Michael Ontkean declining to reprise the role of Sheriff Harry Truman in David Lynch and Mark Frost’s forthcoming Twin Peaks revival, the door was left open for another actor to pin on the badge: Robert Forster, a.k.a the man who turned down the very same role 25 years ago due to a prior commitment. Now, in a new interview with Moviefone to promote his role in London Has Fallen, the Oscar nominee is speaking out about his involvement in the series for the first time: “Well now, first of all, I am under compulsion to not speak about that role. I can now say they've announced the fact that I'm in the picture -- and 216 other cast members. What a big cast! David Lynch, what a good guy he is. He wanted to hire me for the original, 25 years ago, for a part, and I was committed to another guy for a pilot that never went. So I didn't do the original "Twin Peaks," which would have been a life-changer. It's a gigantic hit if you remember those years, a phenomenon. But I didn't do that.” Forster goes on to note that he did ultimately end up working with Lynch on Mulholland Drive -- in which he played the role of Detective Harry Knight -- an experience that made him jump at the chance to reteam with the director on Twin Peaks Season 3: “I got a call from my agents and they said, David Lynch is going to call you. When he called me five minutes later, he said, ‘I'd like you to come and work with me again.’ And I said, ‘Whatever it is David, here I come!’” You can read the full interview here. Twin Peaks is slated to premiere on Showtime in the second quarter of next year. »

Weinstein Company Buys Quentin Tarantino Documentary ’21 Years’

20 May 2016 1:47 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Weinstein Company has bought worldwide rights, excluding French-speaking territories, to the upcoming documentary “21 Years: Quentin Tarantino.”

The project is being produced and directed by Tara Wood. Harvey and Bob Weinstein began working with Tarantino nearly 25 years ago on “Reservoir Dogs” and have partnered with Tarantino on all of his projects since.

The movie was first unveiled in November at the American Film Market. It examines the first 21 years of Tarantino’s career and includes interviews with frequent collaborators, including Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Christoph Waltz, Lucy Liu, Zoë Bell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jamie Foxx, Eli Roth, Robert Forster, Diane Kruger, Michael Madsen and Kerry Washington.

Wood also directed the documentary “21 Years: Richard Linklater.” Both films draw upon the idea that the first 21 years of work defines the career of an artist.

Tarantino’s first film was 1992’s “Reservoir Dogs,” followed by “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” the two “Kill Bill” movies, »

The American Side movie review: Tesla tease

A shady Buffalo private detective whose business seems to consist mostly of blackmailing cheating husbands stumbles into a bit of a conspiracy surrounding missing pages from Nikola Tesla’s diaries, landing him in interlocking schemes among nests of villains willing to do anything to get the documents back. What a way to start off the week! The formidable cast list for Showtime's forthcoming Twin Peaks revival series was revealed this morning, and man, is it a doozy. In addition to boasting such key returning players as Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer/Maddy Ferguson) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne), there are a number of surprising A-listers in the mix including Michael Cera, Trent Reznor, Amanda Seyfried and Naomi Watts. On the downside, a not-insignificant number of cast members from both the original series and the 1992 prequel film Fire Walk with Me are completely absent from the list. Where, for instance, is Lara Flynn Boyle (or Moira Kelly, for that matter)? Michael Ontkean? Piper Laurie? Joan Chen? Anyone from the mill? (Literally, there is no one from the mill.)
