Top Ten Tuesday – Baby Driver Opens Friday, So Here Are the Best Car Chase Movies of the 1970’s

20 June 2017 4:31 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

There’s nothing like a good car chase in a movie. Maybe it’s the daring-do of the stunt drivers that makes you feel you’re in danger even though you’re comfortably in your seat, or the high stakes of the moment in which the characters we’re rooting for will either get out of the situation or have a gruesome finale, but an impressive car-chase scene can make even a mediocre movie a beloved classic.   What makes a car chase legendary, you ask? They’re the ones that keep you at the edge of your seat and actually fit in with the rest of the plot.

Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver opens June 23rd. Baby (Ansel Elgort), is an innocent-looking getaway driver who gets hardened criminals from point A to point B, with daredevil flair and a personal soundtrack running through his head. That’s because he’s »

Jonathan Demme, ‘Silence of the Lambs’ Director, Dies at 73

26 April 2017 8:10 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme died Wednesday in New York of cancer complications, his publicist told Variety. He was 73 years old.

Demme is best known for directing “The Silence of the Lambs,” the 1991 horror-thriller that was a box office smash, a critical triumph, and introduced moviegoers to Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter, a charismatic serial with a yen for Chianti, fava beans, and cannibalism. The story of a novice FBI analyst (Jodie Foster) on the trail of a murderer became only the third film in history to win Academy Awards in all the top five categories ( picture, actor, actress, director, and adapted screenplay), joining the ranks of “It Happened One Night” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Though he had his greatest success terrifying audiences, most of Demme’s work was looser and quirkier. In particular, he showed a great humanism and an empathy for outsiders in the likes of “Melvin and Howard, »

The Rounders

The laid-back, plot challenged non-violent western gets a boost in this folksy comedy about two aging cowboys with less sense than the horses they tame. Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda star together for the first time, leaving behind their older images… they’re too tender-hearted for their own good. If the sex comedy wasn’t quite so dated, Burt Kennedy’s picture might be a classic.

In this case, it comes up with a fanciful explanation of how FedEx is able to deliver packages — full of our heart’s desires for plush toys, killer shoes or electronics — so damn fast.

SXSW Film Review: ‘The Most Hated Woman in America’

14 March 2017 5:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In 1964, Life magazine dubbed Madalyn Murray O’Hair “the most hated woman in America,” running a huge feature on the outspoken atheist. (Just to put her celebrity in context, the magazine devoted its cover to Lbj’s beagles, Her and Him, sitting on the White House lawn.) Tommy O’Haver’s Netflix original gleefully appropriates that label, reminding viewers of a controversial figure whom subsequent generations take for granted, and few bother to disparage today. It was she who fought to remove the stigma from disbelief, who founded American Atheists, and who won a landmark Supreme Court case banning mandatory Bible readings in public schools — all of which factors into a tabloid-style biopic that chooses to focus primarily on the sordid details of her demise.

Whether or not most believers will admit it, the conventional wisdom goes that one of the great comforts of religion is the way it promises something better after death. »
