'Kepler's Dream': Film Review

Thankfully devoid of the fantasy elements endemic to so many cinematic versions of Ya novels, Kepler's Dream proves a modest but diverting family film charmer. Director Amy Glazer's straightforward approach to this adaptation of Juliet Bell's book benefits greatly from the presence of several veteran performers, especially the always reliable Holland Taylor. Currently receiving a limited theatrical engagement, the film should find a receptive young audience in home video formats.

Isabella Blake-Thomas plays the central role of Ella, an eleven-year-old girl forced to deal with a mother (Kelly Lynch) suffering from leukemia and an absentee father (Sean Patrick Flanery) more...

Film Review: ‘Kepler’s Dream’

Film Review: ‘Kepler’s Dream’
There’s plenty of intrigue on the New Mexico ranch our heroine is shunted off to in “Kepler’s Dream,” but little suspense is wrung from it in this tepid family drama adapted from a well-reviewed Ya novel by Juliet Bell. Opening in a dozen markets nationwide simultaneous with a VOD launch, the film is more likely to access viewers in home formats. But even fans of the book are likely to find this translation flat.

When her divorced mother (Kelly Lynch) requires a lengthy hospital stay to undergo a procedure that represents her last hope of beating advanced leukemia, 11-year-old Ella (Isabella Blake-Thomas) must live elsewhere. Her father (Sean Patrick Flanery), who runs a fishing-expedition business, claims he’s too busy to take on the responsibility, but then he’s always been a deadbeat dad. With no other options, Ella is dumped in the lap of a grandmother she’s never met, one her father

Trailer Watch: Three Young Women Are Forced into the Sex Trade in “Trafficked”

Trafficked

“You both owe me 500 men,” Mali (Jessica Obilom) and Amba (Alpa Banker) are told in the new trailer for “Trafficked.” The two young women — from Nigeria and India, respectively — have been sold into a Texas brothel and are being instructed on how they will live from now on. “When you’re with [a man], you smile. Enjoy it,” their pimp Simon (Sean Patrick Flanery) demands. “If you don’t enjoy it, lie — make them think you enjoy it.”

We don’t know exactly how Mali and Amba ended up in the brothel but it’s revealed that another young woman, Sara (Kelly Washington), was kidnapped after she turned 18 and was forced to leave foster care. But Mali suggests that they all try and forget about their old lives and how they ended up in the brothel. “Don’t think about who you used to be,” she says. “You have to keep that other girl buried far away because in here she’ll drive you mad.”

The young women try to heed Mali’s advice but it’s not long before they realize a train line runs about a mile away from the brothel and decide to risk their lives and attempt escape.

Directed by Will Wallace (“Red Wing”), “Trafficked” is inspired by Professor Siddharth Kara’s non-fiction book “Sex Trafficking.” Kara also penned the screenplay. The film opens in New York this Friday, October 6, and in Los Angeles October 13.

Ashley Judd’s Fact-Based Human Trafficking Film Sets United Nations Premiere — Watch
Inspired by real characters from the award-winning book “Sex Trafficking” by Harvard professor Siddharth Kara, Will Wallace’s “Trafficked” follows a trio of intertwining stories about young women forced into the world of human, organ, drug, and gun trafficking. The film focuses on three girls — from America, Nigeria, and India — who, though horrific experiences in the trafficking world, end up as sex slaves in a Texas brothel.

Starring Ashley Judd, Anne Archer, Elisabeth Röhm, Sean Patrick Flanery, Madison Wolfe, and Patrick Duffy, the film looks to cast a glaring light on the human trafficking trade, bolstered by fact-based reporting from Kara. The professor has been researching, writing, teaching, and advocating against modern slavery for nearly two decades, and the film is a continuation of that essential work.

Appropriately enough, the film will have a

DVD Review – The Evil Within (2017)

The Evil Within, 2017.

Directed by Andrew Getty.

Starring Frederick Koehler, Sean Patrick Flanery, Brianna Brown, Michael Berryman, Kim Darby, and Dina Meyer.

Synopsis:

A mentally handicapped man is driven to murder by his reflection in an antique mirror.

The Evil Within is a movie that arrives on the scene with a reputation and a lot of baggage, thanks mainly to its creative force Andrew Getty beginning production on it in 2002, taking six years to shoot it and a further seven to edit it to his liking before his untimely death in 2015. The film was then completed by producer Michael Luceri and a mere 15 years after initial production began the final result is here, so was it worth the wait?

Well, if truth be told it probably wasn’t worth putting any major plans on hold to be able to watch it but The Evil Within is not without merit. The

The Evil Within Breaks from Reality: A Film Review

Tagline: "You Can't Run from a Nightmare!" Director/writer: Andrew Getty. Cast: Frederick Koehler, Sean Patrick Flanery, Dina Meyer and Brianna Brown. There is an old Latin saying: "de mortuis nihil nisi bonum." In English, "of the dead only say good things." However, this would do a disservice to the reader, when discussing Andrew Getty's The Evil Within. This billionaire's only film took fifteen years to complete, after experiencing: financial challenges, lawsuits and crew changes. The director, himself, would die just before completing this film. What is worse - the director was addicted to hard drugs - meth'. Only thanks to producer Michael Luceri was this title even completed. In The Evil Within, Dennis is doubly handicapped by both mental impairments and sociopathic tendencies. Actor Frederick Koehler plays Dennis expertly. But, the films' weak moral message dampens the enjoyment of the film. More of a thought experiment about altered reality,
