Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 4 of 5)

5 hours ago | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter (Michael Mann, 1986, USA):

Noonan is absolutely incredible as a serial murderer in this underrated adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. With all respect to the talented but miscast actors involved in Brett Ratner’s 2002 adaptation Red Dragon (USA), with the exception of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the acting in this earlier, superior version of the book exists on a much higher level. Most notably, there’s nothing resembling a comparison between Noonan’s Francis Dollarhyde and Ralph Fiennes’ interpretation. This role is by far Noonan’s finest film work to date and should not be missed.

Other notable Tom Noonan performances: Phoenix (Danny Cannon, 1998, USA).

Christopher Walken as Brad Whitewood Sr.in At Close Range (James Foley, 1986, USA):

Having once described his role in this film as “the hillbilly Lucifer”, Walken is incredible as a rural crime boss bringing his son, »

Why the world needs Val Kilmer

11 May 2012 7:38 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He could have been another Brad Pitt. Instead he's doing one-man stage shows. Is it time for a rescue plan?

For some time now, I have belonged to a secret society known as the League of Rueful Val Kilmer Enthusiasts. It consists of men of a certain age who adore Tombstone and Heat, and who also have a soft spot for The Doors and The Ghost and the Darkness. And, of course, Top Gun. What unites the members of the league is our affection for the actor himself, mingled with regret that Kilmer did not become the intergalactically famous star we wanted him to be. We also resent the fact that he did not make more movies like Heat while he was young and athletic enough to pull it off.

Because now it is too late. Kilmer has reached the point in his career where he is performing in a one-man show called Citizen Twain, »

Scene:Brooklyn Gives A Preview Screening Of 'Redlegs,' Director Brandon Harris Talks His Influences

6 May 2012 8:17 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Following a night of short films and a video installation "Green|Red" displayed under the Manhattan Bridge, Scene:Brooklyn took over Dumbo's reRun Gastropub Theater for a special preview screening of Brandon Harris' "Redlegs," a feature following a trio of childhood friends brought together after the murder of another chum. Harris, a regular editor/critic for Filmmaker Magazine and occasional cohort of The Playlist (here he chats with the eternal New Yorker Abel Ferrara), raised the appropriate funds on Kickstarter and ventured to his stomping grounds of Cincinnati to create his debut comedy-drama.

Ohio homebodies Aaron and Wilbur meet Marco, someone they've been out of touch with for a substantial amount of time, at the train station en route to the recently deceased Ricky's funeral processions. It's revealed that Marco had abruptly quit urban life to get his hands dirty in the country, a decision that still stings those he had abandoned (namely, »

Congratulations to Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe, winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. The judges have cited "his smart, inventive film criticism, distinguished by pinpoint prose and an easy traverse between the art house and the big-screen box office." And the Globe's collected his nominated reviews. "Journalism's highest honor has only been bestowed upon a film critic a few times," notes Eugene Hernandez of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. "Previous recipients include Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal in 2005, Stephen Hunter of the Washington Post in 2003 and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times in 1975. 'I was just doing my job and this is what happened,' Morris offered modestly during an emotional newsroom speech that was recorded and edited for the Globe website."

Bad Lieutenant Blu-ray Review

16 April 2012 6:30 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Considering his spotty cinematic CV over the past 15 years or so, it’s easy to see why no-one really talks about Harvey Keitel anymore. A once truly great actor has faded almost into obscurity, which is a great shame. A timely reminder of his acting ability comes this week in the form of a remastered Blu-ray release of Bad Lieutenant.

Directed by gritty indie director Abel Ferrara, Keitel plays the titular Bad Lieutenant, a sloppy cop in the midst of a downward spiral. Self destructive and crooked, he is floating through life on a tidal wave of drug abuse. Using his position of power to finance a gambling addiction, things come to a head when he gets in too deep betting on the National League Championship of baseball.

The stress of his increasing debt only serves to heighten his bizarre behaviour, but the lieutenant sees potential light at the end of the tunnel. »

20 of the biggest sci-fi cinema disappointments of the last 20 years

10 April 2012 9:59 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

They appeared to promise so much, but sadly delivered so little. We take a look back at a few of the last 20 years’ biggest sci-fi disappointments...

Every year sees its fair share of good and bad sci-fi movies. But every so often, a movie comes along that, either because of its premise, its cast, its filmmaking pedigree or a mixture of all three, sounds so promising that we eagerly anticipate its arrival. Inevitably, there’s also a small percentage of such films which fail to live up to their early promise.

This list is devoted to this peculiar category of sci-fi movie: the ones that could have been so much better than they turned out. And to prevent the list from getting too long and rambling, we’ve restricted our selection to 20, and restricted the time frame to the last two decades. Your opinions will almost certainly vary, so feel »

Daily Briefing. Nicole Brenez and "Film Criticism Today"

4 April 2012 9:03 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Nice cover for the new issue of Cahiers du Cinéma, which features a collection of articles (all of them offline) on Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt. There's a new Brooklyn Rail out as well, and we've already noted Monica Westin's interview with Geoff Dyer in today's roundup on Andrei Tarkovsky and Paul Felten's review of Damsels in Distress in another roundup on Whit Stillman. In terms of strictly film-related pieces (and let's hope you don't confine yourself to those!), that leaves Troy Swain's graphic celebration of the upcoming series at Anthology Film Archives, The Films of Carmelo Bene, running April 26 through 29, and Donal Foreman's interview with Nicole Brenez.

The occasion for the interview was the series Brenez curated for Anthology last month, Internationalist Cinema for Today (there was a roundup at the time) and Foreman writes a terrific introduction:

The literal ending of the world seems like such an abstract concept that many people refuse to believe that such harmful events as global warming are contributing to mankind’s destruction. But the idea that humans are indeed heavily contributing to their inevitable deaths can be seen in the new sci-fi drama ’4:44 Last Day on Earth,’ which was directed and written by Abel Ferrara and is now playing in select theaters. ’4:44 Last Day on Earth’ chronicles the turbulent romantic relationship between successful actor Cisco (played by Willem Dafoe) and the younger, insecure painter Skye (portrayed by Shanyn Leigh). Figuring out how to spend the last hours on Earth before death, and coming to terms with the idea that mortality is something everyone must face in life, puts the value of life high on many people’s priority lists. 4:44 Last Day On Earth Review

25 March 2012 6:56 PM, PDT | MoreHorror | See recent MoreHorror news »

By Colleen Wanglund, MoreHorror.com

While not technically a horror movie, 4:44 Last Day On Earth (2012) still manages to pack a terrifying, if quiet, punch. Written and directed by maverick filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Leiutenant {1992}, The Funeral {1996}, Ms. 45 {1981}) 4:44 takes an intimate look at a Bohemian couple living out their final day on Earth.

Cisco (Willem Dafoe) is a successful actor living with his artist girlfriend Skye (Shanyn Leigh) on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As the title suggests, life on Earth will cease to exist on this particular day at 4:44 Am due to humanity’s failure to do anything about climate change. Cisco and Skye say their goodbyes to loved ones via Skype, while in between they meditate, make love, and order Chinese food for dinner. Skye is also furiously trying to finish her painting while Cisco goes to visit friends in just one of a »

Not only is the article a terrific overview of Bartel’s amazing career, but the personal angle Varrati uncharacteristically tosses in is very moving. What do Abel Ferrara and John Carpenter have in common? Um, well, the Phantom of Pulp has some not nice words for them, of which he’s completely correct. Plus, a rave review of the little seen film Boy Wonder.I already urged people to do this on Facebook, but now I’m urging you all over again: Please encourage Mark Toscano to write more about the projects he’s preserving at the motion picture academy. 4:44 Last Day on Earth

24 March 2012 2:05 PM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Given the current times, the apocalyptic 4:44 Last Day on Earth—the premise of which is summed up by the title—couldn’t be timelier. We live in a post-9/11 society bent toward fear and anxiety, a society uncertain about the future—the War on Terror, the nuclear program of Iran, global warming, the 2012 phenomenon. Unfortunately, this timely—and fascinating—premise turns out be the only thing Abel Ferrara’s latest has going for it. The film, aimless and superficial, proves to be nothing more than an excuse for Ferrara to shove his fear-mongering agenda down our throats while getting distracted by sex, drugs and »

Title: 4:44 Last Day on Earth Director: Abel Ferrara Starring: Willem Dafoe, Shanyn Leigh If you knew the exact time the world was going to end, how would you spend the final 24 hours and change? That’s the situation the 85 minute 4:44 Las Day on Earth existentially explores. Willem Dafoe and his girlfriend Shanyn Leigh are spending their remaining hours in their New York City apartment.
