The Hannibal Lecter Collection - Blu-ray Review

11 October 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A reviewer tried to give this set a bad review. His liver was eaten with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Slurp. Actually, the set features a fine special edition of Silence of the Lambs and the only way (so far) that you.ll get Manhunter and Hannibal in high definition. Manhunter (1986, 4 stars): A serial killer called the Tooth Fairy (Tom Noonan) is murdering entire families. FBI supervisor Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) calls ex-agent Will Graham (William Petersen) out of retirement to help catch the Tooth Fairy. Graham was nearly killed catching the cannibalistic Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox) and retired because of the trauma. Now he has to go back to work and stop the »

Melora Hardin – best known as Jan from the Us version of The Office – and pro wrestler Paul ‘Big Show’ Wight have signed on to star in the WWE-affiliated wrestling comedy, Knucklehead. With star power like that, Titanic had better watch out.The film, which will be produced by WWE Studios, sees a debt-ridden wrestling promoter (Mark Feuerstein) stumble upon a 450-pound big unit (Wight) who agrees to wrestle for him in order to help the orphanage where he grew up.Hardin will play the owner of the orphanage, who goes with the duo on a road trip across the States in order to enter Wight into a wrestling contest. So it’s Little Miss Sunshine, only with a sweaty giant instead of a little girl. We’re not entirely optimistic about the quality of the finished product, if we’re honest, but there is a ray of sunshine: the great »

The Blu-Ray Review: The Hannibal Lecter Collection - Manhunter (1986)

30 September 2009 10:16 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Colin J reviews the very first Lecter movie on Blu-Ray.

Though it didn't perform particularly well in 1986, Manhunter earned greater prominence after the success of 1991's Silence of the Lambs. The two projects share the same writer - Thomas Harris - and a few characters. Most prominent among these is the infamous Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter, the role made immensely famous by Anthony Hopkins in Lambs. On the original DVD case of Manhunter, we were repeatedly reminded that the 1986 film showed Lecter first, and allegedly did him better. According to the package, Entertainment Weekly declared Manhunter to be "superior to Lambs". The case also "warns" us that "fans and critics alike consider Manhunter to be far superior to Lambs... as well as one of the most unnerving serial killer movies ever made."

What a crock! As a critic and a fan, I take serious exception to the awfully broad brush with which these folks painted. »

By

Allen Gardner

The Human Condition (Criterion) Masaki Kobayashi’s epic (574 minutes) adaptation of Junpei Gomikawa’s six-volume novel was originally made and released as three separate films (1959-61), and is rightfully regarded as a landmark of Japanese cinema. Candide-like story of naïve, good-hearted Kaiji (Japanese superstar Tatsuya Nakadai) from labor camp supervisor, to Imperial Army solider, to Soviet Pow, and Kaiji’s struggle to maintain his humanity throughout. Unfolds with the mastery of a great novel, beautifully-shot, and a stunning example of cinematic mastery on the part of its makers. Four-disc set bonuses include: Interview with Kobayashi; Interview with Nakadai; Featurette; Trailer; Essay by critic Philip Kemp. Widescreen. Dolby 3.0 surround.

State Of Play (Universal) Russell Crowe stars as a veteran Washington D.C. political reporter investigating the murder of an aide to a rising congressional star (Ben Affleck), who also happens to be an old friend. »

Blu-Ray Round Up: MGM Releases Wave of Modern Horror Classics

22 September 2009 6:16 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.

The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.

All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.

Toronto: Getting high on 'Up in the Air'

12 September 2009 10:09 AM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Here are a few of the kinds of movies I wish that Hollywood made a lot more often (or maybe even two or three times a year): a romantic comedy that's not just about situations but behavior, with two flawed and fascinating adults trying to figure out how to act around each other; a movie that connects to a large audience because it taps, in a rich and bold and immediate way, into the fears and anxieties of our time; a comedy in which the dialogue pings with wit and imagination and verve, yet without calling too much attention to itself (so that it doesn't make your teeth hurt the way that Duplicity did); a movie that keeps surprising you because its characters keep surprising themselves. The beauty of Up in the Air, the new film directed by Jason Reitman (Juno), is that it's all those things at once. »

Farina's Gun Charge Wiped From Record

17 July 2009 6:26 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Dennis Farina has been given a break by a Los Angeles judge - he's had a 2008 gun possession charge dropped and wiped from his record.

The Midnight Run star was arrested in May after he was caught carrying a loaded and unregistered .22 calibre pistol through security at Los Angeles' Lax Airport.

He was booked for carrying a concealed weapon but later reached a deal with prosecutors to have the felony reduced to the lesser accusation of entering an airport sanitary area with a weapon, reports TMZ.com.

Farina, 64, pleaded no contest to the charge last July and was sentenced to two years probation.

The actor was back in court on Friday, exactly one year after he accepted the deal, with his lawyer Blair Berk requesting the withdrawal of the no contest plea, telling the judge, "Not all mistakes should be prosecuted as crimes."

But he received more than he was asking for when the judge decided to scrap the charge altogether and have the arrest expunged from his otherwise clean record. »

dream cast: hypothetical ‘Midnight Run’ remake

28 May 2009 3:15 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I’ve been convinced to give Dream Cast another try. (Thank my brother Ken, who posts comments here sometimes as “Ken,” if you’re happy to see this feature return.) This week: Midnight Run, the 1988 action buddy comedy starring Robert DeNiro as a bounty hunter and Charles Grodin as the mob accountant on the run he’s been hired to bring in. (If you have a suggestion for a classic TV show or movie we should play with, feel free to email me.) Midnight Run is one of my favorite movies, and one that continues to make me laugh no matter how many times I see it, because the humor springs from the characters, not from punchlines, and from the inspired performances of and palpable chemistry between DeNiro and Grodin. Key to a successful remake would be finding two actors who could replicate that chemistry and who are funny without trying to be comic. »
