Hector Elizondo Talks About Working on All 18 of Garry Marshall’s Movies

26 July 2016 11:10 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The one staple of every Gary Marshall movie was a supporting role for Hector Elizondo. The two first met in 1978 and quickly became close friends and collaborators. With Marshall’s passing last week at the age of 81, Elizondo spoke to Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh about some of his favorite memories from their 18-movie partnership that started with 1982’s “Young Doctors in Love” and continued through last spring’s “Mother’s Day.”

Hector Elizondo: Garry Marshall didn’t say funny things. He said things funny. He had a way of looking at the world. A unique Garry sound. He didn’t like it when people made a big deal of little things. If you brought something to the table, he was open to it. The first thing he’d ask when a new actor came on set was, “Did you eat?” That was a big thing for him: “Get him some food!” You »

Director/ writer/ actor Gary Marshall dies at age 81

22 July 2016 9:49 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

On Tuesday July 19, Hollywood lost a giant in the world of comedy with the passing of beloved director/writer/producer/actor Gary Marshall at the age of 81. While most of the news outlets focused in on his considerable work in television (he practically owned Tuesday nights in the 1970’s with his “Happy Days” empire), this site would like to salute Mr. Marshall’s work on both sides of the camera.

After impressive writing credits on many of the classic sitcoms of the 1960’s, it was inevitable that the movie studios would tap him to contribute to several screenplays. The first was produced in 1968, a marriage comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, How Sweet It Is. A youth-oriented romantic comedy starring Jacqueline Bisset, The Grasshopper, was released in 1970. TV triumphs quickly followed, so Marshall’s movie career was put on hold for more than a dozen years. 1982 was the year »

Julia Roberts, Robin Williams, Anne Hathaway. All Oscar winners. All once strangers to the silver screen. Still, the most prominent common thread in their prolific careers was Garry Marshall.  With a career spanning nearly five decades, the late director, writer, producer and actor had seemingly endless films and television episodes to his name by the time of his unexpected death on July 19. However, upon closer look at his filmography, the same celebrity names continue to appear.  The 81-year-old was known to cast the same group of actors in his films, a notably loyal move in a sea of competing talent. Five life lessons we learned from Garry MarshallFive life lessons we learned from Garry MarshallAdriana Floridia7/20/2016 10:07:00 Am

Last night, Hollywood lost one of its most prolific filmmakers, Garry Marshall, who passed away at the age of eighty-one.

Marshall was known for his sentimental films that focused on love and friendship in a magical and optimistic way that was unique to his sensibilities. While he had a huge impact on television, as the creator of “Happy Days” and all of its spin-offs, he also offered the film world some of our best romantic comedies and stories of platonic love, from Pretty Woman and The Princess Diaries, to Beaches and Raising Helen.

Marshall’s joy for life was evident through his storytelling, which had quite the impact on us growing up, and up until this day. At the age of eighty, Marshall was still working hard behind the camera, as »

Box Office: ‘Jungle Book’ Dominating with $38 Million Weekend

30 April 2016 7:55 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Showing serious staying power, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” is dominating domestic moviegoing this weekend with an estimated $38 million — the eighth-best third weekend of all time.

That’s more than four times the closest competitor, New Line’s moderate opening for the Key and Peele action-comedy “Keanu” with $9.2 million at 2,658 sites.

Open Road’s launch of romantic comedy “Mother’s Day” generated a modest $8 million for a fourth-place finish behind the second weekend of Universal’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Gramercy’s “Ratchet & Clank” saw limited traction in its fifth-place opening with $5.6 million.

Should Saturday’s estimates hold, all three openers will finish the weekend at the lower end of recent forecasts while  “The Jungle Book” remains an impressive draw at multiplexes with a decline of only 38% from its last frame. Stellar reviews and strong word of mouth will have propelled the tale of an orphaned boy and talking »

Julia Roberts' Pretty Woman Joke in Mother's Day and 5 More Inside Jokes in Movies We Love

Julia Roberts will always be our Pretty Woman. And director Garry Marshall made sure to remind of this with his latest comedy ensemble Mother's Day (in theaters today). In the film, Roberts plays a Home Shopping Network mogul who reunites with the daughter she gave up for adoption about 30 years ago. And only E! News has a look at the movie's nod to Pretty Woman. In the scene, Roberts is eating dinner by herself in a train station restaurant. After her agent, played by Hector Elizondo, stops by for a chat, he looks down at the table and says to Roberts, "You're right, you're right. That is the salad fork." ‘Jungle Book’ to Haul More at Weekend Box Office Than Newcomers Combined

29 April 2016 1:25 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Jungle Book” remains a box office force with early Friday estimates showing a $36 million third weekend — more than the combined take of new titles “Keanu,” “Mother’s Day” and “Ratchet & Clank.”

Open Road’s romantic comedy “Mother’s Day” should gross almost $4 million Friday and finish the weekend around $11 million, with New Line’s Key and Peele action-comedy “Keanu” following closely with a $3.5 million Friday and a $10 million weekend. Gramercy’s “Ratchet & Clank” will earn about $1.8 million on Friday for a $7 million weekend.

Meanwhile, Disney’s “The Jungle Book” will decline by only 40% and finish the weekend with a 17-day domestic total in the $245 million range. If it hits $36 million this weekend, it would be the 10th-highest third weekend haul of all time, replacing “Iron Man 3” at $35.8 million.

The weekend is something of a prelude to what’s widely expected to be a massive domestic opening on May »

Box Office: ‘Keanu’ Purrs to $560,000 on Thursday Night

29 April 2016 7:57 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Action-comedy “Keanu,” starring Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key and a kitten, has purred to the tune of $560,000 at Thursday night screenings in North America, while “Mother’s Day” barely made a whimper with $225,000.

Keanu,” which opened the South by Southwest festival last March, is expected to finish the weekend with $10 million to $12 million at 2,658 sites. Disney’s “The Jungle Book” should rule the box office for a third consecutive weekend in the $40 million range, pushing it to an impressive $250 million total in its first 17 days.

Open Road’s romantic comedy “Mother’s Day,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Jason Sudeikis, could challenge “Keanu” for second place. Directed by Garry Marshall, the film includes a large ensemble with Timothy Olyphant, Margo Martindale, Shay Mitchell, Britt Robertson, Héctor Elizondo, Jack Whitehall and Jon Lovitz.

Film Review: Mother's Day

The Bottom Line (1 minute review)

My mom always said, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.” Sorry mom.

“Mother’s Day” directed by the legendary Garry Marshall features a star-studded ensemble cast in a holiday-themed film that (hopefully) completes the trilogy of star-studded ensemble cast in a holiday-themed film that includes “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve” directed by Marshall. With that said, fans of either movie will probably enjoy “Mother’s Day,” which follows a group of mothers, and one dad, in separate story lines that eventually merge (more or less) after crisscrossing, a few near misses and a lot of coincidences. It’s a format that can work exceedingly well and is popular because audiences can see many of their favorite stars in the same movie.

Both “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve” have an advantage, however, because »
