Donnie Darko

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, and Noah Wyle.

The theatrical version and the Director’s Cut are included, along with the previously released bonus features, a new documentary, a 1996 short film by director Richard Kelly, a hardcover book, and some pieces of art printed on cardstock, found inside an envelope marked “Roberta Sparrow.” (Hmmmm…)

Donnie Darko is a perfect example of how a great movie will find its place in the world, even if it experiences a troubled theatrical release. (See The Iron Giant and The Shawshank Redemption for two other such examples.) In the case of Donnie Darko, any movie that used a plane crash

Exclusive: Director Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal on Why ‘Donnie Darko’ Still Resonates Today

Exclusive: Director Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal on Why ‘Donnie Darko’ Still Resonates Today
On Oct. 26, 2001, Donnie Darko, director Richard Kelly’s sci-fi film about a despondent teenager (Jake Gyllenhaal in his second major film role) who befriends a giant bunny named Frank (James Duval), was released in theaters. The film told a cryptic narrative of a high schooler who is sent on an existential journey after he escapes death from a falling jet engine and learns that the world has just over 28 days before it ends. In that time, Donnie fends off the torments of being a teen -- a testy older sister (Gyllenhaal’s real-life older sister, Maggie), concerned parents (Mary McDonnell and Holmes Osborne), overbearing teachers (Beth Grant), mild flirtations with a new female student (Jena Malone) -- while trying to figure out, in some ways, how to save the world.

“That was a movie that was more about the psychological journey of adolescence and the confusion of it all,” Gyllenhaal tells Et. And while it

Trailer for Horror Film 'The Black Room' Starring Natasha Henstridge

"It will try to seduce you, trick you with pleasure, make you want more. It feeds off your desires." Check out the official trailer for a gore-filled horror film titled The Black Room, from filmmaker Rolfe Kanefsky. The film stars Natasha Henstridge (where has she been recently?) and Lukas Hassel as a newly married couple who move into their dream house, only to discover there's something evil in the "black room" in the cellar. Also starring Lin Shaye, Dominique Swain, James Duval, Auggie Duke, and Caleb Scott. From the looks of it, this doesn't seem like anything particular special. There's new horror films being made all the time, and this one seems forgettable despite the marketing. The flaming title card really tops it off. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Rolfe Kanefsky's The Black Room, direct from YouTube: Paul (Lukas Hassel) and Jennifer Hemdale (Natasha Henstridge) have just moved into their dream house.

Donnie Darko 3 Planned with Original Director Richard Kelly
Will we finally get Donnie Darko 3, a true sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal sci-fi classic? Last year, the 2001 thriller Donnie Darko celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a 4K re-release in select U.K. theaters, although it never made it to the U.S. Now that the re-release is available on Blu-ray, writer-director Richard Kelly revealed in a new interview that he does have plans for a true follow-up that will return to this unique universe. While he doesn't offer specifics, the filmmaker explained that it will be even bigger and more ambitious than the original.

"I think there's something much bigger and more ambitious to do in that universe. It's big and expensive and I think there's time to get to that. I want to make sure we've got the budget to do it justice and not to compromise anything. Another story in this world needs resources and we need to have that in place.

Looking back on ‘Donnie Darko’ with Director Richard Kelly

2001 saw the world introduced to Donnie Darko. The film, set in 1988, told the tale of a teenager weighed down by the knowledge that the world will end in twenty-eight days. The movie launched actor Jake Gyllenhaal as well as director Richard Kelly.

With Donnie Darko Kelly showcased a huge amount of talent, he wrote the film in addition to directing. Darko is a fantastic twisted tale of head scratching time-travel, filled with atmosphere, beautiful visuals and a killer British-heavy eighties soundtrack. It’s a movie that has stood the test of time and has recently been given a painstaking 4K restoration.

The restoration was a passion project for both Arrow Films and Richard Kelly, who curated the project. It really is a truly stunning release, spilling over with bonus content. To co-inside with the release we sat down with Kelly to delve into the history of the film, the oddities

Movie Review – It Watches (2016)

It Watches, 2016.

Directed by Dave Parker.

Starring Ivan Djurovic, Rick Irwin, Sanny van Heteren and James Duval.

Synopsis:

Following a serious accident, Andre (Djurovic) takes on a house-sitting job from a friend deep in the hills of sunny Los Angeles, but soon finds the rather creepy little house in question comes complete with something far more sinister than he had first expected.

However harsh it might seem to pick on the flurry of micro-budget horrors constantly doing the rounds, rest assured, It Watches fully deserves it. Some directors have a knack for taking nothing-budgets to pretty extreme heights and crafting some seriously affecting scares with them, but sadly this is no where even near the case with this aggressively stupid, tactless cash-grab. There might be a few laughs or jumps here and there for the Netflix crowd, but on the whole this is a fairly low-point for an already wrung-out genre.

‘It Watches’ Review

Stars: Ivan Djurovic, Rick Irwin, Sanny van Heteren, James Duval | Written by Dave Parker, Ivan Djurovic | Directed by Dave Parker

I just finished watching It Watches, an independent horror/thriller movie which is coming VOD shortly, and I have got to say it has been a while since a movie completely pulled the rug out from under me like this film did! Honestly, I’ve seen enough movies to think I am always one step ahead of the film I’m watching, and for the most part I am, but I have to say this one outsmarted me. Which makes me very Very happy.

To director Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red) I tip my cap. First of all because I am getting tired of the found footage format. It feels like every horror movie these days has got to have that found footage/CCTV feel to it. However this

Watch: New Trailer for UK Re-Release of Richard Kelly's 'Donnie Darko'

BFI has debuted a brand new trailer for the 4K restoration re-release of Richard Kelly's cult classic sci-fi film Donnie Darko. It first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2001, and quickly became a cult hit. The BFI is now re-releasing it in 4K in cinemas all around the UK this December. Hopefully it'll show up in the Us sometime in 2017. I wasn't introduced to this film until I was in a sci-fi class in high school, but ever since then, I've been a huge fan and have often revisited it. It's not just the soundtrack or the story, but the whole idea behind it and what it means and what's going on. I can only imagine what it must've been like to see this at its Sundance premiere. Jake Gyllenhaal stars, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, James Duval, Jena Malone, Noah Wyle and Drew Barrymore. Watch the superb new trailer below.
