“Haht” of Gold: Top 10 Oscar-Winning Actors from Massachusetts

11 July 2014 1:03 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.

As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry. »

Lifetime just green-lit a television movie based on the story and has set A History of Violence actress Maria Bello to star.

Big Driver will center on a successful mystery novelist (Bello) who takes an ostensible shortcut on her way home from an engagement at a Chicopee, Massachusetts, library and falls into a trap set by a sinister trucker, who proceeds to brutally rape her and leave her for dead. After recovering from her injuries, the novelist uses the detective skills she picked up from writing mystery novels to track down and take revenge on the trucker and his accomplices.

It’s pretty disturbing material for a TV movie, and King’s short story was sickeningly graphic, »

"The humor in this season is a bit more wicked than the last," Jungermann said. "It explores how fragile your self-worth is when it comes to family, and how easy it is to regress into the child you used to be. DVD Review – The Last Keepers (2013)

21 April 2014 7:55 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Last Keepers, 2013.

Directed by Maggie Greenwald.

Starring Aidan Quinn, Virginia Madsen, Olympia Dukakis and Zosia Mamet.

Synopsis:

A young woman and her family discover she has magical powers, possibly fulfilling a prophecy that has been in their family for years. She must negotiate that with the everyday tribulations of school and growing up.

The Last Keepers is a coming of age tale. With a coming of age family drama. With magic?

It’s with this slightly sarcastic front that I met the film, a synopsis about a young woman’s story of growing up with magical potential not grabbing me as much as, say, explosions and men wearing capes. But part of the way through I realised, though not perfect, The Last Keepers is a film you need to meet halfway. If done so, it’s an enjoyable, if short movie that tells the age-old story that growing up is hard. »

Rhea Carver (Mamet) is different. She makes art and clothes from rubbish she picks up from the ground, her family are reclusive artists and this leads to trouble in school as she is ridiculed for her strange behaviour. When she falls in love with Oliver (Underwood) from her school she awakens a power within herself which stems from an ancient family secret. This leads her on a tale of wonder and magic as she tries to figure out who she is and what she can do with this new found power.
