Lee Rich, the mogul behind some of TV's most popular programming like "The Waltons," "Dallas" and "Eight Is Enough," has died, Deadline reports.
He was 85 at the time of his death.
According to People magazine, Rich attended Ohio University and then started out at the Benton & Bowles advertising agency, where he sold sitcoms like "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Danny Thomas Show." Benton & Bowles and the rest of the New York ad agencies on Madison Avenue controlled much of TV at the time, so Rich largely served as an additional producer on shows. He left the agency as senior vice president in 1965 to form his own production company, Mirisch-Rich Productions.
Rich eventually formed Lorimar Productions and served as executive producer of the company's successful series like "The Waltons," "Eight Is Enough," "Dallas" and its spinoff "Knots Landing." In 1980, he told People magazine, "I know exactly what 'Dallas' is. »

One Dallas mystery solved: Remember how we discussed the new key art for TNT's upcoming remake of the iconic nighttime soap? (Of course you do.) Well, the young actors playing Southfork's next generation are pretty sure some of their co-stars had a little help. "We were definitely all photographed, separately, wearing towels. The whole cast," Jordana Brewster told Vulture Wednesday at the Turner networks upfront luncheon. Indeed, Dallas veterans Larry Hagman, Linda Gray, and Patrick Duffy stripped down for the shoot. "I'm sure there was some Photoshopping done, but yeah, we all posed in towels," she said. One guy who didn't have any problems with that? Josh Henderson, who plays J.R.'s smouldering, hotheaded son, John Ross Ewing III. He's a good sport and very used to being the shirtless guy at this point. Before Dallas required him to take it all off regularly, he spent much of his »

Actor Jesse Metcalfe was initially hesitant to sign up for a starring role on the new Dallas revamp because he felt the TV industry was already flooded with too many series remakes.
The former Desperate Housewives star had just filmed another new TV show in Texas when he was approached to join the original castmembers of the 1980s soap, Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray, for an updated version of the drama.
But Metcalfe was "critical of the idea" and wasn't convinced a modern-day Dallas would be a hit - until he gave the script a proper read through.
He tells PR.com, "Ironically, I was shooting another series in Dallas that was called Chase, on NBC. We actually didn’t get a full season. We did 18 episodes and I got a call asking if I wanted to put myself on tape for the new Dallas.
"Initially, I was reticent. I was definitely critical of the idea. There’s been such a huge wave of remakes over the last five to 10 years, most of which had failed. I wasn’t looking to come off of one show that was being cancelled and do a pilot that I thought had a great chance of being cancelled.
"But after I read the script and saw the strength of the writing, and how well developed and complex these characters were, I was interested."
Metcalfe actually auditioned to play John Ross Ewing, the part that eventually went to Josh Henderson - but he insists he's happier portraying Christopher Ewing, the son of Duffy's iconic character Bobby.
He says, "I had done an audition for John Ross and there was some interest there, and we were going to negotiate a test deal. But they decided to test Josh Henderson and they held on to him for the role. I think that’s just great casting and perfect. When they came back to me for Christopher, I was thrilled because I really identified with that character even more." »

A few months ago we tracked down ten of our favorite celebrities from years past to see what they we're up to. We were in the mood to reminisce further, so today we're happy to bring you ten more!
Famous for his roles in Bachelor Party, Grease 2 (maybe that’s infamous?) and TV’s Tj Hooker and hosting Dance Fever, Zmed hasn’t had many acting credits in recent years. Now 58, he’s lately concentrated on theater work and appearing on board Princess Cruise ships in a singing and dancing review.
The erstwhile Justin Taylor from Showtime’s Queer as Folk (2000-2005) will be featured in a small role as a waiter in the upcoming comedy Gayby and is currently half of a two-actor cast starring in a touring production of the play Red, which recently ran at the Cleveland Play House. Jordana Brewster will be rushing from promo chores on TNT's new "Dallas" series into production of "Fast and Furious 6" and then back into "Dallas" production in September -- if the show goes on to a Season 2. That's a safe bet, given how Executive Producer-Writer Cynthia Cidre and the rest of the team have recaptured the Ewing family magic with a blend of the hot new generation and still-fightin' originals Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Larry Hagman, bringing back his classic Texas-sized villain, J.R. "I was super aware of the show when I first got the script, and I was really relieved we weren't trying to remake it, which would have been a huge mistake," says the gorgeous, Yale-educated Brewster. "'Dallas' is such an iconic show, such a part of the culture. Having Larry, Linda and Patrick be part of it is essential to its success." Her character, Elena (a. »

Dallas legend Patrick Duffy is glad the relaunched show has a younger cast - he relies on his co-stars Jesse Metcalfe and Josh Henderson for advice on modern gadgets.
The hit drama series returns to U.S. TV next month after 21 years off air, and producers have drafted in several emerging actors to join original stars Duffy, Larry Hagman and Linda Gray.
And Duffy wasted no time in tapping into the young castmembers' technical knowledge, enlisting their help when his iPhone malfunctioned and he couldn't access his account on Twitter.com for more than a week.
In a post on the microblogging website, Duffy writes, "Sorry I have been 'off line' but my twitter app was broken. Had to start over. Glad to be back... Josh and Jesse told me how to fix it." »

At this week’s press day for the upcoming return of the drama series Dallas, premiering on TNT on June 13th – and starring original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Grey, along with a whole new line-up of actors – Jordana Brewster took some time to speak with Collider about what drew her to television and this show and character, in particular. While we’ll post what she had to say about being a part of Dallas closer to the show’s premiere, we did want to share what she had to say about her involvement in the Fast and Furious franchise. Although she hasn’t yet gotten to read the script for the next installment (tentatively called Fast and Furious 6) , she was able to speculate a bit about how Mia might deal with motherhood, possibly getting to shoot the film in the UK, her hopes that she’ll get to be more active, »

When TNT’s continuation/update/reboot/whatever you want to call it of “Dallas” premieres June 13 audiences will find out what Larry Hagman’s J.R. Ewing, Linda Gray’s Sue Ellen and Patrick Duffy’s Bobby are up to in the 21st century. But what about another original cast member: fan favorite Victoria Principal as Bobby’s erstwhile soul mate Pam? Principal left “Dallas” in 1987, after nearly a decade on the show, and Pam was written off after a fiery car crash left her disfigured. The character briefly reappeared on the show one season later in the form of Principal lookalike Margaret Michaels, when it was revealed »

The mother of all nighttime dramas is less than two months away from making its return to TV. And to ramp up the excitement about the newest iteration/continuation of "Dallas," TNT has put out an extended promo for the soap.
The series catches up with the Ewing family 21 years after the long-running show left the air. It features original cast members Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. Added to the familiar faces are their now grown-up children John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe). From the looks of it, the infighting and backstabbing are going to be just as memorable as they were the first time around.
"The audience is going to have the comfort of the familiar but this really special chemistry of the new," says Brenda Strong, who plays Bobby's new wife Ann.
"Dallas" premieres June 13 on TNT with back-to-back episodes.

Recently the masterminds behind the Dallas reboot gave a nod to their source material by releasing a promotional image of the cast in Bobby Ewing-approved shower attire. A longtime fan of time capsule beefcake (and occasional chronicler of same in the Ae Movie Club), I thought it might be the perfect opportunity to revisit Bobby and his scantily-clad contemporaries in a look back at the prime men of the primetime of days past.
Note that this is just the tip of the iceberg - we'd love to hear about your faves (included here or not) in the comments!
Patrick Duffy in Man from Atlantis and Dallas
Long before he was the appendage of a South Park creature and even prior to that abysmal sitcom he did with Suzanne Somers, Duffy was the glistening star of the late-'70s show Man from Atlantis. Allow me to share some highlights:

Bosses of TV hit Dallas have lined up a series of tributes to the show's late stars Barbara Bel Geddes and Jim Davis for its relaunch this year.
Bel Geddes, who played Ewing family matriarch Miss Ellie, died in 2005, and in the first Dallas broadcast since her passing, her screen son Bobby will be seen visiting the character's grave.
Viewers will be told Miss Ellie died in 2001.
Patrick Duffy, who steps back into his role as Bobby when the show relaunches in the U.S. in June, tells TVGuide.com, "Barbara is a big piece of our history, and it's important to me to honour her. To come back with Linda (Gray) as Sue Ellen and Larry (Hagman) in his J.R. hat, and then see the words Ellie Southworth Ewing Farlow on the gravestone made me think, 'Oh, that's right - she's gone.' It was hard to get through the dialogue."
Duffy reveals producers have also factored in a nod to Jim Davis, who played Miss Ellie's husband Jock Ewing until his death in 1981, by asking designer Richard Berg to paint a portrait of Jock and Miss Ellie which hangs in the family home at Southfork Ranch in the new series.
Duffy adds, "He captured Jim and Barbara in a look to each other that is unbelievable. That painting is actually alive and gives me a nice feeling that they're always there. Through the whole first season, I don't think an episode goes by that Mama is not mentioned in reference to Southfork and the land." »

Producers of the new series of legendary drama Dallas have made a cheeky reference to the show's most famous moment in a billboard advertisement for the relaunch.
Viewers were left stunned in 1986 when Bobby Ewing came back from the dead after he passed away following a car crash the previous season.
The infamous plot peaked when the character, played by Patrick Duffy, was found by his grieving widow Pamela enjoying a morning shower, and his death - and the entire season - was explained away as a dream.
The audacious move sparked anger and awe in equal measure among fans of the show - and producers of the upcoming relaunch have boldly referenced the programme's most famous moment in a new ad.
The poster shows Duffy and his original co-stars Larry Hagman and Linda Gray in a shower alongside newcomers Jesse Metcalfe, Josh Henderson, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo and Brenda Strong - with the slogan, "They're back. And no, you're not dreaming." »

A promotional picture for the new Dallas series has been released. The image features the cast for the TNT serial drama in a steamy shower room, along with the tagline: "They're back. And no, you're not dreaming." The concept for the campaign references the infamous moment during Dallas's 1986 season when the character Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) was found alive and well in a shower despite being killed off the previous year. The episodes in which he was dead were explained as being dreamt by his wife Pam (Victoria Principal). Duffy is joined by original cast members Larry (more) »

For those who weren't sure they could live another day without seeing 80-year-old Larry Hagman in a bath towel, have I got a treat for you. Because here he is, in a bath towel, on the new poster promoting TNT's upcoming revival of the iconic '70s and '80s primetime soap "Dallas". Larry's not the only one, of course. Patrick Duffy - you know, the dad from "Step By Step" - is also on hand here, and boy does he get our minds going with that come-hither sideways stare. Gee, aren't your loins just tingling? In marketing its upcoming Dallas reboot/continuation, TNT has to appeal to the nostalgic memories of old fans while also attracting newer and younger viewers. Hence, this recently debuted promotional art that winks at one of the original series’ most famous plot twists/fuck yous—Patrick Duffy rising from the dead, revealing that the entire preceding season was a dream—while at the same time making an even more salacious wink at the kids by featuring one of those sexy family group showers they dig so much. “Get soapy with Grandpa!” the tagline does not read but also does, basically »

The angle TNT is using to promote their Dallas reboot? Abdominal muscles and nostalgia. We're definitely Ok with both strategies. In the first official promo photo for Dallas, everyone's in the shower, which is pretty clever on two levels… First, who doesn't like looking at attractive people looking steamy and wearing towels? Yes, we're talking about you, Patrick Duffy. But most importantly (especially for original Dallas fans), the shower setting is a nod to the season eight-ending twist when Pam woke up to find her husband Bobby (Duffy) happily showering away. Why was that a twist? Because he was supposed to be dead from a car accident! But you realized that the whole season »
