HBO Gives ‘Enlightened’ New Life But Cancels ‘Hung,’ ‘Bored to Death’ and ‘How to Make it in America’

21 December 2011 11:54 AM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Happy Holidays fans of Enlightened, HBO has given you a gift by renewing the first-year series with its second season. As for fans of Bored to Death, Hung, and How to Make it in America, I’m afraid you were given a lump of coal in your stockings. HBO cancelled all three series after Hung and Bored to Death failed to reach a wider audience after three seasons. How to Make it in America had just two seasons, same result. Still as beloved as these shows were by their most avid fans, HBO has to make hard decisions too.

With marginal ratings, HBO will move forward and beef up their network with six new shows including Dustin Hoffman’s horseracing drama, Luck featuring Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, Gary Stevens, and Tom Payne, Aaron Sorkin’s untitled series starring Olivia Munn, Ricky Gervais’ Life’s Too Short, Veep, Girls, and Angry Boys. »

Bored To Death Creator Ames Invites Fans For A Drink

21 December 2011 8:01 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Bored To Death creator Jonathan Ames is mourning the cancellation of his TV show by inviting fans to join him for a night out in New York on Wednesday.

Bosses at America's HBO network announced their decision to axe the cult comedy, starring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis, on Tuesday after three seasons on air.

The series' creator Ames has now decided to thank fans for their support by inviting them to a night out at a bar in Brooklyn on Wednesday so he can buy them all a drink.

He announced the plan in a series of posts on Twitter.com, writing, "Fans of Bored To Death: come to the Brooklyn Inn tomorrow night at 10pm & I'll buy you a drink!... Thank you for watching us these last three years!"

Ames subsequently explained his decision to the New York Post's gossip column Page Six.

He says, "I went back on Twitter so that I could invite Bored to Death fans for a drink at the Brooklyn Inn, my treat, to say goodbye to the show. Maybe some people will show up... I plan to buy everyone a drink if they're a fan...

"It's been a loony and nutty three-year run, which I'm very grateful for. In the same way that Casablanca ended with Humphrey Bogart and Claude Rains walking off, I hope that people will think of these three characters still alive... These were three very unique friends." »

Bored to Death: TV Series Cancelled; No Season Four

20 December 2011 9:03 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

It seems that Jonathan, George, and Ray have tackled their last case. HBO has cancelled Bored to Death after three seasons and 24 episodes.

Bored to Death revolves around a 30-year-old author of detective novels, Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman), who casually smokes marijuana, loses his girlfriend, and finds himself fighting writers block. To stimulate his imagination, Jonathan becomes an unlicensed private investigator and tries to solve cases with the help of his friends; comic book artist Ray (Zach Galifianakis) and magazine editor George (Ted Danson).

The show debuted in September of 2009 and drew a 0.5 in the 18-49 demographic and 1.03 million viewers. Subsequent episodes fell slightly and the eight episode season ended up averaging a 0.4 rating with 770,000 viewers. Season two did about the same in the demo but the total audience average grew to 927,000.

TV News: HBO Renews ‘Enlightened,’ Cancels Three Other Series

20 December 2011 11:14 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – HBO has such a limited amount of series and so many critical darlings that when they announce a renewal or a cancellation it carries more weight than most networks. They announced four today with no major surprises as we all expected that Golden Globe-nominated “Enlightened” would return for a second season and even fans of “Hung,” “Bored to Death,” and “How to Make It in America” could have guessed that those series were headed in the other direction.

Starring Laura Dern, “Enlightened” has started to build quite a buzz, even appearing on a few Top 10 TV lists (ours will publish on January 3rd, 2012, mark your calendars). It’s hard to say the show is a “hit” by any standard judgment system since ratings for lower level HBO shows are often so miniscule as to not make much on an impact at all, but the fact is that critical fanfare brings in subscribers, »

Bored To Death With All This Talk Of Boardwalk!

11 December 2011 5:28 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

HBO has taken over the world. I’m serious. For every self deprecating viewer of Hollyoaks (nobody claims it is of a higher plane), there is someone quoting Omar, Kenny Powers or Bret and Jermaine. The church of HBO is a pseudo-religion, one which I am completely devout to. One which continues to grow in belief, aided by the ever critically mauled powerhouse Bskyb’s purchase of all HBO programming, giving everyone in the UK a fair playing field to watch the best content the little box in our living rooms have to offer. Well, as long as you have Sky TV and are willing to wait anywhere from 24 hours to 3 months for the same episode the Us had prior.

Now shows such as Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones are strewn over every advertising board available, HBO with or without Sky’s help is now firmly in the mainstream. »

Hairy Role in CSI for Roger Bart

Hairy Role in CSI for Roger Bart

You know him from Desperate Housewives and The Event, but now actor Roger Bart is headed to the set of CSI. Catch this. Things will probably get hairy.

For the long-running CBS crime drama Bart will settle into the shoes of a wig maker. I sense there will be a bit of dramatic flair in this role. Bart’s wigs are specifically for cancer patients and according to EW, the site that broke the news, the gentleman has a very high regard for his own talent. His guest-starring role will air this coming February.

The actor may have been well-chosen for the role of a wig maker. He has quite a nice head of hair. Bart has multiple Broadway credits to his name. His films include American Gangster, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and Law Abiding Citizen. On Wisteria Lane he is George Williams, »

CSI Review: Guns and Ammo

8 December 2011 1:24 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Nothing like coming back from turkey-feasting break to an intense episode of CSI such as "Zippered," where bullets went flying when Catherine and Agent McQuad were trapped in a truck trailer.

To start, I was thrilled to see Grant Show and Matt Lauria guest staring as McQuad and Pratt, respectively. Because they have both recently been on my other show Burn Notice, it was nice to see a couple familiar faces, especially when you enjoy their work.

The way they were building up the relationship between McQuad and Catherine, I wondered if they were setting him up as the basis for her to take the job in DC. It would have been a good hook that the guy she likes just started a new job there.

Since we know that Marg Helgenberger is leaving the show and that Elizabeth Shue will be replacing her, I through maybe this would the beginning of that transition. »

CSI Season 12: A Look Back, Forward

5 December 2011 1:05 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

The May finale of CSI brought with it the end of two eras: Nate Haskell as a serial killer; and Lawrence Fishburne as Ray Langston.

When CBS filled the latter void with Ted Danson, I wondered if the man responsible for Sam Malone and Dr. Becker could pull off such a serious role as D.B. Russell. But the result has been a welcome and refreshing change that makes me excited to review CSI every Wednesday night for the rest of the season.

D.B. has quirks that reminded me of Grissom. He's a lot lighter and more bohemian than Langston ever could have been. The writers also brought him in at the top of the investigative food chain, with Catherine being demoted due to her involvement with Langston’s adventure in Los Angeles.

Another new team member is Elisabeth Harnois' Morgan Brody, who had to leave Los Angeles after »

Robert David Hall Finally Gets to Kiss the Girl on ‘CSI’

4 December 2011 10:55 AM, PST | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

By BeckSmith

HollywoodNews.com: Marg Helgenberger is just now shooting her last couple of episodes of “CSI” before she leaves the long-running series. Robert David Hall acknowledges it’s another big cast change, and he’s going to miss her. “She’s a friend, she’s like a sister. I’ve known her for 12 years now. But of course, I support her decision to move on and try new things,” he says, “and I’m looking forward to working with Elisabeth Shue.”

The series, of course, has had quite a few comings and goings in recent years. Hall admits he still misses William Petersen, and Laurence Fishburne, who is a good friend of his. But now, “I’ve really come to love Ted Danson. He’s such a generous actor and such an interesting actor. You watch him and wonder, ‘What is he going to do next?’ As D.B. Russell, »

Bored to Death 3.08 "Nothing I Can't Handle By Running Away" Review

Bored to Death season 3 comes to a close with its latest "Nothing I Can't Handle By Running Away,” the second half of a guest-star packed close that sees Jonathan (Jason Schwartzman) coming to terms with the truth of his biological father, while George (Ted Danson) offers to host his daughter's wedding and Ray (Zach Galifianakis) finds comfort in a legion of fans obsessed with his comic books.  The momentum from last week mostly fizzles, but is this the last we'll see of Bored to Death?

There’s talk going around of this being Bored to Death’s last season, thereby making “Nothing I Can’t Handle By Running Away” its last episode, owing largely to meager ratings and the increasingly pressed career of its three leads.  That being the case, “Nothing I Can’t Handle By Running Away" certainly »

Is this the synopsis for the live-action Akira remake?

30 November 2011 8:17 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

A recent casting call appears to have revealed a brief overview of the Akira remake’s plot. Will the new Kaneda be running a pub…?

Regardless of fan opinion, the Hollywood live-action remake of Akira is pressing ahead. And with Jaume Collet-Serra in the director’s chair and a cast that reportedly includes Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Garrett Hedlund, there's not long to go before shooting begins in early 2012.

Before the cameras roll, though, there’s the small task of roping in the rest of the players, and over at the marvellous Bleeding Cool, a casting call appears to provide a taste of what we can expect from the finished film’s story. Here’s what looks like a brief synopsis:

Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel.
