Emmy Predictions 2017: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

23 March 2017 2:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Last Year’s Winner: Louie Anderson, “Baskets

Still Eligible: Yes.

Hot Streak: There hasn’t been a back-to-back winner in the category since Jeremy Piven won three years in a row for “Entourage.”

Fun Fact: Tony Hale, Ty Burrell, and Eric Stonestreet have all won twice in the past seven years, but never consecutively.

Last year saw two “Veep” supporting actors land nods, but let’s see if we can get a few more in 2017. In addition to Tony Hale (who’s won twice in the past four years) and Matt Walsh (who snagged his first nod in 2016), Timothy Simons, Kevin Dunn, and Gary Cole are all more than deserving of some TV Academy love. Sure, that would take up five of the six slots, but can we really argue against any of them?

Those willing to try include last year’s winner Louie Anderson, who returns stronger than ever »

With so much hype surrounding shows’ Christmas and Halloween specials, it’s easy to forget that there have been some great St. Patrick’s Day episodes in the TV world. So here are a lucky seven episodes that’ll get you excited to celebrate the holiday! Or make you want to stay at home and chill, since all are available to stream on Netflix.

“30 Rock”

Like a double rainbow, “30 Rock” gave its fans not one, but two reasons to get excited, as it aired two St. Patrick’s Day episodes in 2009 and 2012. However, the 2009 episode, “The Funcooker,” is the standout. Written by Tom Ceraulo and Donald Glover, the episode sees Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) attend jury duty, in which the woman on trial hilariously reflects Liz’s own work problems. She must also juggle problems that arise when her show’s stars (Tracy Morgan and Jane Krakowski) pass out and curse while hosting the St. »

A Medium With a Message: Inside TV’s Long History of Tackling Social Issues

14 March 2017 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Abortion. Alcoholism. Pedophilia. Slumlords. Assisted suicide. Civil rights. Criminal justice reform.

These are all timely topics for television drama in 2017. But they were also tackled, with gritty realism, more than a half century ago on two landmark CBS series: “The Defenders” (1961-65), starring E.G. Marshall and Robert Reed as crusading father-and-son defense attorneys, and “East Side/West Side” (1963-64), featuring George C. Scott as a New York City social worker, with Cicely Tyson as his able secretary. Tyson’s series regular role, coupled with the fact that she appeared with her natural hair, was groundbreaking in a fraught period of civil rights struggles.

The New Frontier era ushered in by President John F. Kennedy’s election marked a moment when the networks made room for “prestige” narrative series that dealt with weighty social issues. The appetite for serious fare was stoked by the May 1961 declaration by Kennedy’s FCC chairman, Newton »

Excuse the language, but NBC’s metaphysical comedy The Good Place dropped a forkin’ great plot twist on us in January’s Season 1 finale. (And Ted Danson’s wicked smile when Michael’s scheme was revealed will haunt us forever.)

In fact, it was such a great twist that creator Michael Schur had to work hard to keep it a secret. Stars Kristen Bell (Eleanor) and Danson “were the only other two people who knew, »

At the end of the Valentine’s Day This Is Us episode, Jack ordered up a tall glass of trouble. Whether he’ll make it a double, star Milo Ventimiglia says, remains to be seen.

We’re talking, of course, about the recent scene that showed the Pearson dad drinking — after a long dry spell — following a fight with wife Rebecca. Ventimiglia tells TVLine that whether or not the alcoholic beverage is a one-time thing, it doesn’t bode well for their overtaxed marriage.

Tom Selleck Clears Up The “Three Men and a Baby” Ghost Rumor

Tom Selleck was one of the stars of a classic 80s hit directed by Leonard Nimoy entitled Three Men and a Baby.  The other stars were Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson.   The movie about three grown men bachelors living together in NYC when a baby is suddenly dropped on their doorstep was a novel idea at the time and audiences loved it.  Watching three men without any women around trying to take care of a baby was highly entertaining and comical.  But if you fast forward to today, one of the things that’s highly remembered about the film is a

TV Review: ‘Legion’ on FX, Starring Dan Stevens

1 February 2017 8:30 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

There’s nothing wrong (and often quite a bit right) with TV’s mainstream, tried-and-true superhero modes, but those whose tastes lie in that direction may want to seek their cape fixes elsewhere: In look, style, and tone, “Legion” is not interested in an incremental update to what is offered by solid shows like “Supergirl” and “Luke Cage.”

Legion,” a Marvel-inspired drama from “Fargo” creator Noah Hawley, is not timid. It offers a jittery take on many of the genre’s familiar themes, and it hurls them together with such boldness that the entire concoction ends up carrying quite a kick. Like I said, it won’t be for everyone, but those who are pulled into the surreal, jagged orbit of this distinctive drama are likely to stay there for the full eight-episode run. It is, literally and figuratively, a trip — and it’s often an exhilarating one.

The Good Place: Renewed for Season 2!

30 January 2017 12:28 PM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Whether you're heading to The Good Place, The Bad Place or that middle place that's still a little murky, we have news!

NBC has opted to give us The Good Place Season 2 for a 13 episode run.

With the cliffhanger from The Good Place Season 1, we're all breathing easier.

As The Good Place drew the curtain on its freshman season, we discovered Michael had fooled us all.

The six key players on the series, including Eleanor, Chidi and Tahani, were all specifically chosen as part of a colossal joke in the afterworld.

How quickly could Hell's manipulator's take six people who thought they were in The Good Place and make them completely miserable?

What?!

Yep, they were all in The Bad Place all along. Eleanor never imagined she belonged anywhere other than The Bad Place, and Jianyu agreed with her in his own assessment.

The others, though, were shocked and dismayed. »

Well it's winter and not even the fun holiday-season of winter, that's behind us, now it is just cold. It's hard to want to do anything because of the weather and the daylight being much shorter. But that is great for one thing: television! This time of year is the best time for television and just binging a bunch of shows! I know there's a lot to choose from so I've create a list that covers the most important types of shows and the best ones you should be watching right now.

Best New Hit Show: “The Good Place

This category is both the easiest and the hardest to do, easiest because this show just started this season so there's only a few episode which means less time to catch up! In that same token, it is the hardest because then you have to keep consistent following along with it »
