The Man Behind Sacha Baron Cohen

16 May 2012 9:23 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Since "Saturday Night Live" began airing, only one show made a serious run at unseating its cultural significance as the go-to sketch comedy series: ABC's "Fridays."

Starting in 1980 -- a year that would see Lorne Michaels leave "SNL," hurtling the show toward the brink of cancellation -- "Fridays" ran for two seasons, and would help launch the careers of Michael Richards and Rich Hall. (In the film "Man on the Moon," Jim Carrey, playing Andy Kaufman, reenacts one of the most notorious moments from "Fridays.") But, more important, "Fridays" began the collaboration between Larry David and Larry Charles -- two men who would go on to work on two television shows that you may have heard of: "Seinfeld" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

These days, Charles is the director of Sacha Baron Cohen's movies: "Borat," "Bruno," and, now, "The Dictator" -- the first scripted collaboration between Cohen and his director. »

'The View': Howard Stern takes over, asks Barbara Walters if she's 'high'

10 May 2012 12:11 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

For the first time ever -- despite many appearances by his wife Beth Ostrosky -- newly-minted "America's Got Talent" judge Howard Stern visited "The View." Or, rather, took over "The View." From trying to set Barbara Walters up on a date to ribbing Sherri Shepherd about that old flat earth flub, some of the best moments from Thursday's (May 10) Stern-edition of "The View":

On Barbara Walters' sex life:

"Barbara wants a man badly," says Stern, who suggests Charlie Rose as a possible candidate. This lights a fire in Walters who ends up curling herself up in Stern's lap, thus enabling him to brag about getting "downright sexual" with the 82-year-old "View" doyenne (who is a long-time Stern friend, btw.)

On Sherri Shepherd's 2007 assertion that the world is flat:

"I went for a walk the other day on the beach and it does appear that the world is flat, »

‘God Bless America’ interview with writer/director Bobcat Goldthwait

10 May 2012 10:34 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait stepped out of his Police Academy shadow with his first directed film Shakes the Clown in 1991, in which he also starred as the title character. Since then, Goldthwait has put more of his focus on becoming a filmmaker, releasing absurd cult favorites like World’s Greatest Dad (starring Robin Williams), Windy City Heat, and now his raging dark comedy, God Bless America.

In his latest film, Joel Murray plays a divorced father named Frank who decides he has had enough of bratty reality TV stars, jackass political commentators, people who talk during movies, etc. With the help of a young girl named Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), Frank decides to kill some people in hopes of making our world a nicer place.

I sat down with Goldthwait to discuss God Bless America, what he thinks of MTV, and the little anti-Semites extras he worked with on set.

TV Review: Community 3.18, ‘Course Listing Unavailable’

4 May 2012 12:07 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Community delved further into darker territory this week following the ending of last week’s episode in which we learn Star-Burns had perished when a meth lab in the trunk of his car exploded. His death has kick-started a chain of events that could see the end of the study group. The ‘Chang Rises’ arc also hits full stride as Dean Pelton reluctantly enlists the protection of ‘The Changlorious Bastards’.

Alex Osbourne may be dead and gone but that doesn’t stop him popping up a few times in this weeks episode for some more laughs, namely his video will in which he asks Abed to make a tribute video for him and leaves him with footage of himself acting a fool in front of a green screen. Later in the study group, Annie points out how awkward and quiet it is because of Star-Burns death, »

'Community' - 'Course Listing Unavailable': I predict a riot

3 May 2012 5:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's "Community" coming up just as soon as I'm Ted Danson at Whoopi Goldberg's roast... When "The Simpsons" does high-concept episodes in which familiar characters die, they take place outside the show's regular continuity, and it's easy for Groundskeeper Willie to return to the land of the living in the next regular episode. "Community," though, has treated all of its episodes as if they take place in the same universe — even if the laws of that universe tend to vary wildly from week to week. So Star-Burns' death in the "Law & Order" parody isn't something to »

'CSI: NY' vs 'CSI: Miami': Which should go?

3 May 2012 1:13 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent EW.com - Inside TV news »

Anthony E. Zuiker may argue otherwise, but the CSI franchise can’t go on forever — which is why rumors persist that at least one of the series could meet its maker by May 16, when CBS presents its fall 2012 lineup to advertisers. Common sense would dictate that CSI the mother ship should go first: It’s been on their air since 2000 and has lost three major players (Gary Dourdan, William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger) in the last decade. (We’d mention Laurence Fishburne, too, but honestly … do you miss him that much as Langston?)

But the long-running procedural has recaptured some mojo »

John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff on "Cheers" for 11 years, credits the TV show's long run to the talents of its writers. He also says he hopes to play the character he loves so much once more in a "Cheers" reunion.

Ratzenberger told me on the set of my HDNet talk show "Naughty But Nice." â€.And now most writers have grown up watching TV, so what you have now is just old jokes in 'I Love Lucy,' but in 'Cheers' they were all original. They were very literate. Cheers wouldnâ€.t get on the air today."
