‘BearCity’ Is the Biggest and Hairiest Gay Trilogy You’ve Never Seen

25 July 2017 1:50 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

“If something’s not representing you, you just have to change it,” queer filmmaker Silas Howard told IndieWire last month. “Because no one else is going to care enough to do it for you.”

That’s exactly what “BearCity” writer/director Doug Langway did when it came to addressing the dearth of movies about his community: Bears. A passionate niche within gay male circles, a bear, for the uninitiated, is an affectionate term for “the bigger, hairier guy,” as Langway put it. With only one feature under his belt from 1996 (“Raising Heroes”), Langway initially set to work on a script that would encompass all the colors of the bear rainbow.

Seven years and three movies later, the “BearCity” trilogy is the biggest gay movie franchise you’ve probably never heard of. It’s also a triumph of a grassroots independent filmmaking model that has all but disappeared.

Alan Cumming Wants to Make a Sequel to ‘The Anniversary Party’ and Play Unlikable Characters

13 July 2017 12:34 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

With his devilish smirk and playful demeanor, Alan Cumming has always been a charmer. Exuding an uncommon blend of boyishness and gravitas in high-profile roles like “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and “The Good Wife,” to his tour-de-force one-man “Macbeth” on Broadway, Cumming has built a reputation as one of the most versatile, provocative, and charismatic actors working today. Which is why it’s unsettling to see him play a character who is, as he put it, “kind of not very nice.”

The film is “After Louie,” and the role is Sam Cooper, a prickly visual artist who spends his days paying for sex with younger men and sifting through archival footage of a friend who died of AIDS. Based on the experiences of writer/director Vincent Gagliostro, Sam is one of the lucky few survivors who lived through the AIDS epidemic and came out the other side. »

Emma Stone Reveals Male Co-Stars Took Pay Cut to Ensure Equality: ‘Because They Feel It’s What’s Right’

7 July 2017 6:58 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In an interview with Out Magazine, Oscar winner Emma Stone revealed that multiple male co-stars have taken lower salaries in order to match her own. “In my career so far, I’ve needed my male co-stars to take a pay cut so that I may have parity with them,” she said.

“And that’s something they do for me because they feel it’s what’s right and fair. That’s something that’s also not discussed, necessarily—that our getting equal pay is going to require people to selflessly say, “That’s what’s fair.” If my male co-star, who has a higher quote than me but believes we are equal, takes a pay cut so that I can match him, that changes my quote in the future and changes my life.”

How Donald Trump and James Comey Destroyed the Way Film and TV Depict the FBI and CIA

29 June 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Donald Trump’s battles with intelligence agencies and the many controversial moves by former FBI director James Comey may change the way Hollywood approaches stories from that world.

Stories of the FBI and CIA usually focus on a simple good guy/bad guy approach. The agencies, with the backing of the United States government, take on evildoers. On CBS’ “Criminal Minds,” that means chasing down brutal killers. On Fox’s “The X-Files,” that has meant exploring a shadowy conspiracy by a cabal far removed from the elected government.

But that’s all starting to change, and the battle between government officials and the intelligence community, which might have seemed an unnecessary plot a few years ago (“Wait? Who are audiences supposed to root for? Aren’t they on the same side?”) is now front and center.

Alan Cumming and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have gone to court to get Tonka, a chimpanzee who co-starred alongside the actor in the 1997 comedy Buddy, out of "unsanitary" care in a Missouri facility.

The federal lawsuit, filed by PETA in the U.S. District Court of Missouri's Eastern Division on Friday, seeks to transfer Tonka and 10 other chimpanzees from the Missouri Primate Foundation, an animal-care facility, to accredited sanctuaries. Amusing Second Trailer for Tennis Showdown Film 'Battle of the Sexes'

23 June 2017 9:57 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"There's not a single thing I don't hate about Bobby Riggs." Fox Searchlight UK has revealed a new trailer for the indie sports comedy Battle of the Sexes, from the directors of Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks. Set in the 1970s, the comedy profiles the true story of a wacky tennis match between Emma Stone as tennis champ Billie Jean King, and Steve Carell as chauvinist Bobby Riggs. The match earned attention as a true "battle of the sexes", but there seems to be more going on than just tennis. The full cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Morales, Alan Cumming, Eric Christian Olsen, Sarah Silverman, and Martha MacIsaac. This seems very funny and fun to watch, looking forward to it.
