'Re-Animator: The Musical': Director Stuart Gordon talks about his singing-and-beheading theatrical spectacular

3 May 2012 12:37 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

A few years back, film director Stuart Gordon had the thought that his gore-filled 1985 horror movie Re-Animator might be improved with the addition of some songs. It was an odd idea — but an ultimately successful one. In the spring of 2011, Re-Animator: The Musical opened at Hollywood’s Steve Allen Theater to great reviews (Variety hailed it as “an entertainment of rich rewards and high accomplishment”) and tonight the play officially starts a second run at the Hayworth Theatre, prior to engagements at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and the Edinburgh Festival. The Raven (2012)

26 April 2012 5:19 PM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: James McTeigue

Written by: Ben Livingston, Hannah Shakespeare

Featuring: John Cusack, Alice Eve, Luke Evans, Brendan Gleeson

From a script written by Hannah Shakespeare (her last gig was on the TV series The Bionic Woman. Yup.) and actor Ben Livingston, this insipid film should carry the tagline “Poe for Stupid People Who Like The New Sherlock Holmes Movies.”

Because that’s what it is — it’s a film about Poe for people who have no idea who Edgar Allan Poe actually was and who have never read anything by him. People who adore his stories and poems, and the body of films and art inspired by Poe’s work, will be aghast at this by-the-rote semi-action/adventure about a loveable rogue named Poe who dashes about 1849 Baltimore romancing ladies, getting into bar fights and generally being an endearing, Han-Solo-ish lout. John Cusack wavers in and out of a »

New Clip from the Next Episode of Transformers Prime

26 April 2012 5:00 AM, PDT | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

I hope you’ve had a chance to catch this terrific animated series on The Hub, now in its second season. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, the Transformers feature films, Fringe), it received a 2011 Daytime Emmy for Background Design and Color Design, and nominations for writing, directing, music direction and composition, and Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program for the legendary Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime – yes, the same man who gave his voice to Prime in the movies and video games.

So it looks great, it sounds great, and it has some good solid storylines. You’ll also recognize some of the other voice actors: Jeffrey Combs (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) as Ratchet, Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters 2) as Agent Fowler, and Markie Post (Murphy Brown) as Jack’s mom June, and recurring guest voices including Firefly castmates Adam Baldwin as Breakdown and Gina Torres as Airachnid. »

Exclusive: Quoth Jeffrey Combs, 'Nevermore'

16 April 2012 1:00 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

Jeffrey Combs is no stranger to horror. Best known for his work in films like The Frighteners, The Pit and the Pendulum, and the Re-Animator series, Combs is taking to the stage. His one-man show, Nevermore, directed by long-time collaborator Stuart Gordon, debuted in Los Angeles in 2009, and after touring with it around the country, he is settling back in for a run at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood. As the name may suggest, Combs plays Edgar Allan Poe, who is giving a poetry recital when he starts to unravel mentally. I chatted with Combs about his role, John Cusack, and the real Poe. Tell me about Nevermore. I'm on my third or fourth year with the show. It originated about five or six years ago, when I »

Looking back at From Beyond

4 April 2012 5:43 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon returned a year later with another Hp Lovecraft adaptation, From Beyond. Rob looks back at a great, goo-filled 80s horror…

There's been some discussion that some of weird fiction writer Hp Lovecraft’s more grand ideas would not translate that well onto film or television. That the bizarre horrors that lurk in the dark corners of his universe are better implied or hinted at rather than slapped onto the screen with CGI.

While I, along with other fans, still wonder what Guillermo del Toro’s take on At The Mountains Of Madness might have been like, these ideas need a budget of millions – the grandeur of Cthulhu rising from the ancient city of R'lyeh, which fans have held in their imaginations since the 1930s, would be expensive to replicate. But there are still many Lovecraft myths that would be much cheaper to adapt.

And this is where Stuart Gordon comes in. »

Indie Horror Month Video Interview Part One - Barbara Crampton Reflects on Re-Animator, From Beyond, Castle Freak and More

22 March 2012 4:06 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Most of us fell in love with actress Barbara Crampton after her portrayal of Megan Halsey in Stuart Gordon's cult classic Lovecraftian horror comedy Re-Animator in 1985.

In the film she gets mixed up in the bizarre experiments of Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs), who can reanimate the dead, and must suffer through one of the most insane moments involving a severed head in cinema ever.

From there Crampton continued to win us over with her countless other performances in independent genre films like From Beyond and Castle Freak (reuniting her with both Gordon and Combs) as well as with her roles in other B-movie delights like Chopping Mall, Puppet Master, Trancers II and Robot Wars.

After taking some time off to raise her family, Crampton has now made it back on the indie horror scene with roles in Adam Wingard's You're Next and in Rob Zombie's upcoming The Lords of Salem, »
