10 Ridiculous Holiday Horror Films

11 December 2014 1:10 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

TriStar Pictures

Christmastime is a cinephile’s dream. Not only will they have a smorgasboard of memorabilia, Criterion Collection blu-rays and old props from the set of a Jim Jarmusch movie that went for surprisingly little money at auction under their tree come the morning of December 25th, that’ll be the icing on the cake of a whole month of superlative festive films. From It’s A Wonderful Life to Die Hard to A Muppets Christmas Carol (which features both the definitive Scrooge in Michael Caine and the definitive Charles Dickens in Gonzo), the schedules and cinemas are stuffed with classic Christmas films.

Some people’s movie tastes skew a little darker, though. A little bloodier. A little lighter on the festive cheer, a little heavier on the buckets of gore and B-movie production values. Horror film makers don’t miss a trick, though, and having already mined Halloween, »

Bluray Review: Tales From The Crypt/Vault Of Horror

1 December 2014 1:19 AM, PST | | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Making their Bluray debut here in the U.S., Amicus Films’ film adaptions of Tales From The Crypt and Vault Of Horror scores well, courtesy of Scream Factory. The two anthology films, featuring excellent short stories pulled right from the classic E.C. Comics, look better than ever, and in the case of Vault Of Horror, offers viewers three different editions to choose from.

For fans of both classic anthologies, or just new viewers stumbling upon them, Scream Factory really does yet another excellent job bringing new life to classic horror films dying to enter your collection.

1972’s Tales From The Crypt has everything that a good anthology needs: great storytelling, excellent performances and having the direction by Hammer mainstay Freddie Francis doesn’t hurt either. While a lot of people who haven’t seen the film thus far might expect a creepy and entertaining anthology entry, what they’re »

Every year there seems to be an inordinate amount of new CGI Christmas movies thrust upon unsuspecting supermarket shoppers – after all, most folks buy theses types of titles on impulse whilst browsing in the likes of Asda, Tesco et al. Titles that are watched once or twice and then sit on the shelf for the most of the next year or, even worse, are tossed in to the “get rid” pile  (I know you all have one). Saving Santa is one such film.

Once upon a time, Santa operated with just a small workshop and a few elves. But, as Christmas has grown ever bigger, Santa has been forced to innovate! »

Film Review: ‘Foreign Body’

19 September 2014 2:39 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Any long, celebrated artistic career is allowed a folly or two, and at age 75, Krzysztof Zanussi has come up with a whopper in “Foreign Body.” , with saintly Catholics on one side and depraved corporate villainy on the other. It just might have worked as a clearly outsized parable, but the flat, earnest execution of a haplessly trashy script — one that might as well have originated with Harold Robbins or Sidney Sheldon — only underlines how out of touch the veteran helmer-scenarist is from the 21st-century milieus he hopes to expose. His name will ensure further fest travel, but this multinational production will have a tough time finding critical or commercial support even in its countries of origin.

Pic begins in Italy, where Angelo (Riccardo Leonelli) is bidding a most reluctant farewell to his Polish g.f. Kasia (Agata Buzek). Despite their mutual love (and faith), she is following through on her intention to enter a convent. »
