Oscar Best Picture Contenders Reach Voters With Nostalgia

Oscar Best Picture Contenders Reach Voters With Nostalgia
Historical movies have a reputation for tugging at the heartstrings of both Academy voters and fans, just ask anyone who regularly watches “Gone With the Wind” or spends evenings cozied up with Turner Classic Movies. But this year, a series of period-set releases also come with a twinge of nostalgia. This only makes them more endearing.

Call Me by Your Name

Nostalgia Trigger: First Loves; Self-Discovery

Just about everyone has a coming-of-age story, no matter your sexual orientation. Director Luca Guadagnino’s film, which is based on James Ivory’s adaptation of the heart-swelling André Aciman novel, chronicles a love affair between a 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) and the attractive American student (Armie Hammer) who comes to stay with his family in the Italian countryside during the early 1980s. It could be compared to 1971’s “Summer of ’42,” with its message of sexual awakening and young love is strong enough for a month of throwback Thursdays.

Hillary Clinton Says Gop Tax Plan Will "Hurt So Many People"

Stopping by The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recapped what she'd been up to since her last, pre-2016-election appearance on the show and shared her concerns about the Gop tax bill.

“It seems like the last time I saw you, you said we were gonna do this show in the White House and we were all excited about that,” DeGeneres was quick to mention to the former presidential candidate. “We would’ve too,” Clinton agreed, before adding, “Well, it didn’t work out that way. So, I thought I’d come back and see how you were...

People Explains: Can President Trump Really Be Investigated for Alleged Past Sexual Misconduct?
Shortly after some of Donald Trump’s accusers called for a congressional investigation into their claims of sexual harassment and assault, a group of Democratic lawmakers called on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform to look into their claims.

But with Republicans controlling both the houses of Congress—plus the executive branch of government—the chances for a Congressional inquiry already appear slim: the committee’s chairman, Representative Trey Gowdy (R-s.C.) shot down the request almost immediately, referring it to the Department of Justice, over which Trump has oversight.

The decision, according to Politico, doesn’t sit well with Democrats,

The 'Honorable’ Omarosa Manigault: All the Drama from Her Extended 15 Minutes of Fame in the White House
It isn’t her first fall from grace involving Donald Trump but it might be the biggest. Manigault Newman, who was fired by Trump three times on various seasons of The Apprentice, has rebutted reports that she faced the same fate in her White House position. But there’s no denying her downfall. Here’s a look back at the low points leading up to her White House departure.

Try to Make it Through Sam Smith's Soulful Version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' Without Crying

Try to Make it Through Sam Smith's Soulful Version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' Without Crying
Sam Smith‘s soulful voice manages to pack emotion into every single lyric. Add a dose of Christmas nostalgia to the mix and you have a perfect storm—except instead of rain, it’s tears. So. Many. Tears.

But rest assured, they’re the good kind! Listening to Smith’s rendition of Judy Garland’s holiday chestnut “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” performed on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, is a seasonal catharsis. Like a fine ice sculpture, it’s delicate, nuanced, and all-too-impermanent.

The 25-year-old “Too Good at Goodbyes” singer first covered the song in 2014, bringing it to No.

Emails Suggest Roger Stone, Not Steve Bannon, Masterminded Savage Trump Debate Stunt (Exclusive)
It’s become political legend that two days after the “Access Hollywood” video first surfaced, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Steve Bannon, responded with one of the most brutal stunts of the 2016 campaign. But emails obtained by TheWrap suggest it may not have been Bannon’s idea after all. Just before the Oct. 9 presidential debate with Hillary Clinton in St. Louis, where Trump’s “grab ‘em by the p—y” comments were sure to be the focus, Trump hosted a news conference with several women who had accused President Clinton of sexual misconduct. The plan was to rattle Hillary Clinton and shift scrutiny.

Lori McCreary Learned How to Pivot Early. Then She Met Morgan Freeman

Lori McCreary Learned How to Pivot Early. Then She Met Morgan Freeman
Four years ago, Revelations Entertainment CEO Lori McCreary saw the writing on the wall: the funding for the meaningful mid-budget films she and company co-founder Morgan Freeman favored was drying up. Friend and fellow producer Mark Gordon suggested she consider television, so she set up a lunch meeting with then-cbs Entertainment president Nina Tassler. She had no projects to pitch, only questions about what to do. Tassler told her to find a person or place that viewers could spend 100 hours with, then get back to her.

Initially, McCreary was at a loss. It was hard enough to find a character sufficiently interesting to warrant a 90-minute film. Then she saw Hillary Clinton’s forceful reaction to the controversy surrounding the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, Libya, and she had her answer. It would be a series loosely inspired by Clinton and the two other women who’ve served as U.S. Secretary

Morgan Freeman’s Biggest Revelation: He Could Shape His Own Destiny

Morgan Freeman’s Biggest Revelation: He Could Shape His Own Destiny
Revelations Entertainment has explored a wide variety of topics since Morgan Freeman and computer-programmer-turned-producer Lori McCreary founded the production company two decades ago: The projects have been both global and universal, tackling South African politics (the 2009 feature “Invictus”) and women in power (CBS’ “Madam Secretary”) in addition to fundamental issues such as love, belief, rebellion and peace (the National Geographic docu-series “The Story of Us”).

But the impetus to form the company came from a deeply personal place in Freeman.

Like many men of his generation, Freeman grew up playing cowboy and watching Westerns. But, as an African-American, he didn’t see many people who looked like him riding high in the saddle on the big screen, literally or figuratively. There were a few who were given respectable but not necessarily fully developed roles, including “Spartacus” gladiator Woody Strode and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” co-star Rex Ingram, but most high-profile black actors appearing in mainstream films, such as

Watch Samantha Bee Show How 'Sh--ty Media Men' Affected Election
Samantha Bee examined how misogyny in the media worked against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election after numerous powerful journalists face sexual harassment and misconduct allegations.

On Full Frontal, Bee played a damning edit montage from the disgraced bunch – including Charlie Rose, Matt Lauer and Mark Halperin – where they disparaged, interrupted or condescended to Clinton, other women and (in Lauer's case) a muppet. For instance, Lauer repeatedly cut-off Clinton during a presidential forum. Halperin once called Clinton "kind of aggressive and not that funny," but interviewed Trump about his favorite foods,

James Mangold directing Patty Hearst film

David Crow Dec 7, 2017

Following Logan, James Mangold is co-writing and directing a movie about hostage-turned-revolutionary Patty Hearst.

Well it’s good to see that despite whatever ominous headlines are in the Hollywood trades these days, the folks at 20th Century Fox are not letting it stop them from developing some interesting sounding projects. Variety was the first to report the announcement that under the Fox 2000 label, James Mangold has signed on to direct an untitled Patty Hearst movie about an heiress hostage turned leftwing radical bank robber. Whether seen as a brainwashed victim or militant revolutionary, Hearst’s story continues to catch the imagination, including perhaps that of Elle Fanning who is circling the project with the aim to play Hearst.

The film adapts American Heiress, Jeffrey Toobin’s nonfiction and bestselling account of Hearst, who was a Berkeley undergraduate in her sophomore year when she was kidnapped by a

11/8/16 (aka November 8th) documentary review: too soon, too soon

MaryAnn’s quick take… An important portrait of America on the day that changed it for the worse… but difficult to watch, with the impact of the election still spiraling out of control. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Every day. Every damn day, there’s some new horror, some new national shame, that springs from the fact that Donald J. Trump — reality-show star, multiply failed businessman, silver-spoon scion, and proud pussy-grabber — is the President of the United States. (Today: Trump is throwing gasoline on the Middle East.) It’s been more than a year now since that awful Election Day, and as we come up on a year on from the inauguration, it’s safe to say that the Trump presidency has been at least as bad as many of us feared, and arguably even worse.

See Kate McKinnon Talk 'Cinematic' Moment Reading Hillary Clinton's Book
Kate McKinnon recalled the moment she heard Hillary Clinton comment on the Saturday Night Live cold open – in which McKinnon, as Clinton, played Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on the piano.

"I was listening to the audiobook, walking on the Manhattan streets, and I heard my name and was like, [fake cries]," she told Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday's Tonight Show. "As I was having this reaction, I was aware that it was a cinematic moment, so I was like, 'I'm gonna keep it going.' And I sank to my knees and made

Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan: Where Are They Now? All About the Former Skaters Ahead of Margot Robbie's I, Tonya
It was the cry heard ’round the world.

At the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in 1994 – just one month before the Winter Olympics – champion American skater Nancy Kerrigan was brutally clubbed in the knee, leaving her unable to compete.

It was later revealed that the ex-husband and bodyguard of fellow American skater Tonya Harding worked together to hire someone to attack rival skater Kerrigan. Though Harding long disputed her involvement, she was eventually convicted of hindering the investigation into the incident. She received three years probation, 500 hours of community service, and a $160,000 fine — and was ultimately banned from the U.
