Cimino adapted the Andre Malraux novel "Man's Fate" and to be soot in Shanghai with Johnny Depp, Daniel Day-Lewis, John Malkovich, Uma Thurman, and Alain Delon. Years earlier Fred Zinneman had done pre-producton work and had gone through considerable rehearsal with his cast when the plug was pulled by MGM just prior to the beginning of principle photography.
