[Now Streaming] Your ‘Battleship,’ ‘The Dictator,’ and ‘Hysteria’ Alternatives

17 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to Battleship, The Dictator, and Hysteria.

It’s the Navy versus extraterrestrials in Peter Berg’s star-studded adaptation of the popular board game. Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard and Rihanna co-star.

The armed forces against alien forces:

Starship Troopers (1997) In this schlocky cult classic Earth’s greatest military force looks to conquer a planet populated by man-eating bugs. It’s a gory and absurdly good time. Paul Verhoeven directs; Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris co-star.

Pitch Black (2000) When an interstellar flight crash lands on a dangerous planet, a by-the-book pilot and a sneering convict must team up to help those stranded survive a night plagued by an army of creatures whose only weakness is light. David Twohy directs; Radha Mitchell and Vin Diesel co-star. »

Veep: Spoilers for June Episodes

Surprisingly enough, the Veep has had a couple of victories lately. Granted, for each one of them, there's a "yoghurt"-type incident to trip her back up, but she got her man on the Clean Jobs Bill, thanks to a rather smart ploy by Dan. And right now, her focus is still on getting a piece of legislation passed in her name, in order to gain positive press, impress the President, and pave the way for future projects. Oh, and help people, too, but that's...not exactly high up on the list.

Coming up on Veep, though, Selina will see that the Clean Jobs Bill might not have been the legislation to back as strongly as she has, especially considering the possible Congressional hearing it inspires.

Below are the initial air dates, episode names, episode descriptions, and repeat dates for the episodes seven and eight of Veep. »

15 May 2012 7:40 AM, PDT | Upcoming-Movies.com | See recent Upcoming-Movies.com news »

HBO's sent along a new deleted scene from the fourth episode of Veep called "Memory Stick." The Armando Iannucci written series made its premiere on April 22nd, and stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Anna Chlumsky, Matt Walsh, Tony Hale, Sufe Bradshaw, Reid Scott, Justin Doescher, Tim Simon and Jennifer McCormick. Former Senator Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has accepted the call to serve as Vice President of the United States. The job is nothing like she imagined and everything she was warned about. 'Veep' follows Meyer and her staff as they attempt to make their mark and leave a lasting legacy, without getting tripped up in the day-to-day political games that define Washington... Anna Chlumsky Happily Revisits Her Office Drone Days On Veep

Music Videos - Free Music Videos

Every Sunday night for the past four weeks, Anna Chlumsky and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have made us grateful that the office we have to head to on Monday morning is nowhere near as stressful as theirs on Veep. For that (and for all the laughs it provides) we thank them. Incidentally, Chlumsky feels our weekday pain. We’d forgotten all about this, but when she stopped by the office last week for Big Morning Buzz Live she reminded VH1 Celebrity of her two years in the publishing world.

“First, I was a fact checker for Zagat and then I was an editorial assistant for HarperCollins publishing house,” the My Girl star, 30, said of her jobs after graduating from the University of Chicago, and she actually enjoyed those gigs. “Especially publishing. … But it’s not what I was meant to do.”

Sufe Bradshaw Speaks on Being "Junk Yard Dog" of Veep

12 May 2012 10:55 AM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Relatively speaking, the character of Sue rarely curses on HBO's uproarious new comedy, Veep.

So I wanted to give star Sufe Bradshaw a chance to let loose when I got her on the phone this week. Did she have any interest in getting a few F bombs out of her system?

"I think I cursed enough in my youth," she laughed. "I got it all out then."

Fair enough. This makes Bradshaw perfect for the role of Selina Meyer's secretary, someone Bradshaw describes as "the junk yard dog of the office."

"She doesn't get as worked up as everyone else," the actress said, referring to Matt Walsh's frazzled Mike or Anna Chlumsky's swearing Amy. "Sue just wants to get the schedule done, get the Vice President on time and go home."

And not to a fake dog, either.

Sue grounds the characters around her, while the cast itself »

Anna Chlumsky: 'Veep' Could Happen!

11 May 2012 12:49 PM, PDT | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

My earliest memories of Anna Chlumsky involve her making me weep uncontrollably as she begged for Thomas J's glasses. But over the last few years, the only tears Anna's evoked have been derived from laughter as she's taken several bold steps into the world of comedy. Starting small (a guest spot on 30 Rock) and working her way up, Anna starred in 2009's uproarious political satire, In the Loop -- a role that led to her current gig as Amy Brookheimer, the Vice President's Chief of Staff on HBO's can't miss new comedy, Veep.

I caught up with the delightfully bubbly actress this morning to discuss the comedy education she's getting from Julia Louis-Dreyfus and find out how Sunday's all-new Veep couldn't be better timed to the political conversation happening in light of Obama's gay marriage interview.

Style Seen: Veep‘s Anna Chlumsky Always Wants To Look Like Ginger Rogers

Music Videos - Free Music Videos

We hope, Internet, that you’re finally getting used to the fact that My Girl cutie Anna Chlumsky is all grown up and cracking us up as the ambitious chief of staff to Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). When she stopped by the VH1 office to appear on Big Morning Buzz Live yesterday, she looked like she was all business — but she was a whole lot of fun too. Though a stylist helped her choose her outfit for the occasion, she certainly has her own sense of style as well. Asked what, or who, influences her fashion, she told us, “My mom, I’m certain has influenced me. She kind of raised me to dress as much like Annie Hall as possible. And I always watch really old movies and musicals and stuff, so I think that always creeps into however I want to look. »

Meet the Staff of HBO’s ‘Veep,’ With Julia Louis-Dreyfus

7 May 2012 10:27 PM, PDT | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

As a producer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a good eye for talent. Her first post-“Seinfeld” gig as producer-star was “Watching Ellie,” which featured none other than Steve Carell as a series regular. Louis-Dreyfus says Carell was the obvious choice the moment she saw his tape. And her series “The New Adventures of Old Christine” boasted a cast of supporting players that included Clark Gregg, Wanda Sykes, and Hamish Linklater. For “Veep,” the producers and casting director Allison Jones have assembled another fantastic cast of players to portray the vice president’s staff.Sufe Bradshaw as Sue Wilson, executive assistantA prominent stage actor, Bradshaw has been seen on such comedies as “Mind of Mencia” and “The Hard Times of Rj Berger.” Says Louis-Dreyfus, “Sufe came in and was so comfortable with improvisation. Mark Lashley: Veep Doesn't Work as a Political Satire (But It's Really Funny Anyway)

7 May 2012 3:56 PM, PDT | Aol TV. | See recent Aol TV. news »

Hammocked between the wildly popular new season of Game of Thrones and Lena Dunham's Girls, which has inspired some interesting discussion of how television portrays the experience of young women (among other things), Veep, HBO's new comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as supremely ineffectual U.S. Vice President Selina Meyer, seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle. Even accounting for the divergence of critical opinion surrounding the series, I would suggest that the reason we don't talk about Veep is because we don't often think too much about shows whose primary merit is simply being very funny. And Veep, in its first three weeks, has been one of the most consistently hilarious series on television.

With that in mind, I'll go ahead and dispense with an important concession: for a show that's set in a location as particular as the office of the Vice President, Veep barely functions as a political satire. »

Q&A: Anna Chlumsky Talks 'Veep'

4 May 2012 2:23 PM, PDT | Access Hollywood | See recent Access Hollywood news »

Anna Chlumsky is all grown up and starring as Julia Louis-Dreyfus' sidekick in "Veep," from creator Armando Iannucci.

The very funny comedy, airing Sunday nights on HBO at 10 Pm, focuses on Julia, as Vice President Selina Meyer, and her team, including Anna as Amy Brookheimer, her Chief of Staff.

Anna, of course, first rose to fame starring in "My Girl," with Macaulay Culkin. After taking some time off as a young woman to get an education (she majored in international studies), settle down with her husband, and embark on a short career in publishing, she was wooed ...

'Girls' & 'Veep' Renewed For Second Seasons

30 April 2012 1:19 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"Girls" and "Veep" have been renewed by HBO. The cable network has given second season pick-ups to both shows, with 10 episodes each.

"Girls," which was created, produced, directed, written by and stars Lena Dunham, follows four girls -- Hannah (Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) -- struggling to find their way in New York City. Judd Apatow and Jenni Konner serve as executive producers alongside 25-year-old Dunham. According to HBO, its gross audience to date is 3.8 million viewers.

"Girls" has been one of the most buzzed about series of the year. The comedy was criticized for its portrayal of New York, namely the lack of diversity amongst its actors. After a big publicity push, the series faced some serious backlash from viewers, but Apatow told The Huffington Post he welcomes it.

HBO Renews Lena Dunham's 'Girls' & Armando Iannucci's 'Veep'

Haters gonna hate, but Lena Dunham will have the final word as her excellent HBO series "Girls" as well as Armando Iannucci's "Veep" have both been renewed for a second season. And the numbers don't lie.

Dunham's fresh and funny series about a quartet of young women navigating love, sex, work and life in Manhattan has accumulated 3.8 million viewers over its first three episodes. Clearly, the knowing look at the awkwardness of early 20s life for women is resonating with audiences. HBO likely already had an indication they had a hit on their hands after they gave SXSW audiences a sneak preview back in March, where it was met with high praise and a rapturous reception. And mark our words, Allison Williams is poised to be the first breakout star from the show.

Meanwhile, while not as incisivie as we would like, Armando Iannucci's White House comedy "Veep »

Review: 'Veep' Goes 'Contagion' As A Virus Makes Its Way Through Washington

29 April 2012 7:30 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Season 1, Episode 2: Frozen Yoghurt

We addressed this in the season's first episode, but if you're looking for trenchant insight into the American political system played for laughs, "Veep" won't be doing that. But, as essentially, a workplace comedy boasting a higher concept than most, the week's entry proves that within that structure, the show has promise.

Things kick off with good news for veep Selina Meyer who finds out that her Clean Jobs Commission is looking at a greenlight. "Oh my God, that is so great for me!" she exclaims, before correcting her statement by saying that she meant the country, of course. But for Meyer, it's the kind of initiative that Amy (Anna Chlumsky), her chief of staff, notes is "legacy stuff." With the President in South Africa and unable to stranglehold the veep's office in the name of political positioning, Selina is eager to seize the opportunity. »

'Veep's' Anna Chlumsky: The Three Stooges and a Frankenstein prom dress liven up family stories

29 April 2012 2:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Anna Chlumsky's family roots extend to Moe, Larry, Curly and Frankenstein.

Chlumsky, who plays Amy, chief of staff to Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Vice President Selina Meyer, on HBO's Sunday comedy "Veep," had a great-grandfather who was in vaudeville.

"He opened for the Stooges, and he had a trained bear," Chlumsky tells Zap2it. "Vaudeville ended, and all these guys had to get other jobs, so my great-grandfather was -- I think he was a cop. At that point he told my grandmother that she couldn't have a prom dress, and she was very sad. And he wrote Mae Clarke, whom he had known, and asked, 'What do I do?' And she sent him -- sometimes the story is she sent him the trunk, sometimes that she sent him the dress -- the story changes depending on the holiday."

Still, it's a great story that your grandmother's prom dress was in "Frankenstein. »

'Veep' dream cameos: Which 'Seinfeld' actors should get bit parts?

24 April 2012 4:01 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

In HBO’s new comedy Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus excels as Selina Meyer, a vice president who’s foul-mouthed and powerless. Tony Hale, a.k.a. Buster Bluth, does great work as her loyal body man, Gary. Anna Chlumsky as Amy, the Vpotus chief of staff, makes me glad the actress ended her self-imposed acting hiatus.

But the show — which our own Ken Tucker calls fun, if not gut busting — might benefit from a few cameos. Specifically: It’d be great if some of Louis-Dreyfus’s old Seinfeld cast mates took up temporary residence in the Oval Office. Er, the Naval Observatory. »
