Bright review

Tolkien meets La cop thriller in Netflix’s Bright. Blockbuster or Christmas turkey? Here’s our review...

Back in the 1980s, when the buddy-cop thriller was all the rage, Alien Nation took the genre’s staples and threw a bit of sci-fi into the mix. In a future Los Angeles where extraterrestrials live among humans, an Earth-born cop (James Caan) is reluctantly partnered with an alien law enforcer (Mandy Potenkin); as they solve a case involving murder and narcotics, their antipathy eventually gives way to friendship and respect. It was familiar stuff, even back then, but the sci-fi angle gave it a certain freshness, not to mention a neat (if less than subtle) allegory for racial intolerance and hatred.

Best Santa Claus Movies of All Time

Who doesn't love Santa Claus? This jolly, rotund individual with the big white beard is loved and revered by all. In fact, he is the ultimate uniter. I defy you to tell me any religion that doesn't at least smile somewhat (regardless of how they feel about Christmas) when they see this iconic being. Santa Claus has been portrayed by people of all walks of life. Some looking like the Jolly Ole Saint Nick we see in Norman Rockwell paintings, and other's looking like Don Knotts. Santa is a symbol and that symbol has found no better home (no pun intended) than on the silver screen.

For years this character has been portrayed in movies. He has appeared in cameos and starring roles. In fact, it seems that just adding Santa Claus (and the holiday season) to a film can make it have a longer life. People love nostalgia. They

Misery, 1990.

Directed by Rob Reiner.

Starring James Caan, Kathy Bates, Richard Farnsworth, Lauren Bacall, and Frances Sternhagen.

Synopsis:

Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s very personal novel Misery comes to a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Shout! Factory. The disc features a new 4K restoration of the film, along with new interviews with Reiner and effects artist Greg Nicotero and the rest of the bonus features found in a previous home video edition.

A co-worker and I like to talk about how the marketing content we produce isn’t the flashiest, sexiest stuff out there, but it’s the kind of nuts-and-bolts work that gets the job done. Our analogy is that we’re making well-built furniture that may not win design awards, but it’s functional.

That’s how I feel about Misery, which was directed by Rob Reiner and adapted by the legendary William Goldman from

‘Paddington’ Team Takes on Enid Blyton Classic ‘Magic Faraway Tree’

With “Paddington 2” still riding high at the British box office, the team behind the hit movie is developing another children’s classic, “Magic Faraway Tree,” an adventure novel by Enid Blyton.

The project first came to light in 2014 when Sam Mendes and Pippa HarrisNeal Street Productions said they were working on a movie. StudioCanal, the European studio behind the Paddington films, is now on board, and Simon Farnaby, who wrote the new film starring the stuffed bear, is attached to write the Blyton adaptation. It marks the first time the Blyton’s 1943 novel has been taken to the big screen.

Blyton, a prolific author of books read by generations of British schoolchildren, wrote four “Faraway Tree” books. “Magic Faraway Tree” is the second in the series. Each book takes place in the enchanted forest in which the special tree grows; the tree is tall enough to reach the clouds and large enough to contain small houses

Political Sci-Fi Satire ‘Obamaland’ Selling at American Film Market

Political Sci-Fi Satire ‘Obamaland’ Selling at American Film Market
One of the more offbeat titles selling at the American Film Market is the political science-fiction satire “Obamaland,” produced by Bergman Film Company, in association with Tomangie Films.

The company has been handing out red caps at the Loews Hotel with the satirical inscription “Make America Not Great Again” in hopes of enticing buyers to attend a Sunday screening in Santa Monica, Calif.

Set in the year 2040, the film explores the idea of an alternate future in which President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan tragically fell from Trump Tower before Inauguration Day and created a scenario in which Barack Obama declares himself president for life, and remains president for another two decades.

“It’s time to laugh again,” said writer/producer Gregory Bergman. “The film is truly meant to be a political satire. Both sides have really gone off the deep end and ‘Obamaland’ is a reflection of that

Interview, Audio: Miles Teller on ‘Thank You for Your Service’

Chicago – When Johnny comes marching home again, as the old song goes, we’ll give him a hearty welcome then. Most Americans truncate that to the phrase, “Thank You for Your Service,” which is the title of a new film featuring Miles Teller, who portrays Iraq War veteran Adam Schumann, and is the directorial debut of Jason Hall.

The film is about the lingering effects of being on a battlefield, and the lack of care given to the soldiers who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd). Adam Schumann (Teller) comes home from the Iraq War to his wife and kids, along with a couple other buddies from his unit, Will and Solo (Joe Cole and Beulah Koale). As they try to assimilate back to normalcy, Will takes his own life. This triggers buried war traumas in Adam and Solo, and they lash out in different ways against the battle fatigue and families.

Dozens of Women Accuse Director James Toback of Sexual Harassment

Dozens of Women Accuse Director James Toback of Sexual Harassment
Oscar-nominated writer-director James Toback has been accused of sexually harassing at least 38 women stemming back to at least the 1980s.

A Los Angeles Times report explains that while some of the women were looking for work in the entertainment industry at the time of the alleged incidents, others were simply women Toback approached. 31 of the women agreed to speak on the record, and they all detailed various incidents in which Toback allegedly made lewd suggestions, steered conversations into sexually explicit territory, and in the worst instances, rubbed against them until he ejaculated into his pants or on their bodies.

“The way he presented it, it was like, ‘This is how things are done,’” actress Adrienne Lavalley said of a 2008 hotel room encounter that ended with Toback trying to rub his crotch against her leg. When she recoiled, he stood up and ejaculated in his pants. “I felt like a prostitute, an utter disappointment to myself,
