10 largely forgotten UK sci-fi sitcoms

23 July 2015 3:57 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…

With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.

Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt. »

Entourage: 9 memorable celebrity cameos from the HBO show

17 June 2015 1:30 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Entourage attracted some of Hollywood's biggest names during its glory days on HBO. It felt like everybody, be they A-list actor, director or screenwriter, wanted the chance to send themselves up on the show.

With the Entourage movie hitting UK cinemas this week, we pick out nine stars who brought a bit of Hollywood glamour to our TVs with cameo appearances on the show.

1. James Cameron

The record-breaking Titanic and Avatar director made four Entourage appearances in total, the highlight being his involvement in Vincent Chase's Aquaman movie. What's surprising is just how good an actor James Cameron is... we really believed he was passionate about making that film!

2. Gary Busey

Gary Busey is a force of nature. This much is true. The actor has forged a reputation as an eccentric, and he spoofed that to the max across three episodes of Entourage. Who could forget the moment he poured water all over Turtle? »

3 June 2015 7:19 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Warner Bros.’ “Entourage” has launched respectably with $2 million in Tuesday night previews that started at 7 p.m.

The comedy is expanding to 3,108 sites Wednesday. Warner Bros. decided in the spring to move the debut forward two days — separating it from 20th Century Fox’s comedy “Spy” and Gramercy’s “Insidious: Chapter 3.” It’s also facing the second weekend of Warner’s “San Andreas,” which dominated the box office in its opening.

Online ticket service Fandango reported Tuesday that “Entourage” had accounted for 50% of its daily sales. Recent projections have placed “Entourage” with forecasts of about $20 million for the Friday-Sunday period, four years after the HBO series ended.

Original cast members Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven reprise their roles. Series creator Doug Ellin directed from his own script. Mark Wahlberg, Rob Weiss and Stephen Levinson produce.

The film features dozens of cameos including Common, »

'Entourage' (2015) Movie Review

2 June 2015 10:27 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Entourage isn't so much a movie as it is a 104-minute, extended episode of the hit HBO television show stitched together with deleted scenes included. The end result is good for some laughs, but there's very little at stake and to say the film has an ending is to suggest anything really happens at all, which it doesn't. Having only watched the first two episodes of the first season of the series the night before my screening, I can say I was familiar with the characters, but not so much the eight season journey Hollywood superstar Vinnie Chase (Adrian Grenier) his boys -- Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Johnny (Kevin Dillon) -- and agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) have taken to reach this point, but suffice to say, you don't need much of a road map. Vinnie has divorced his wife after a week of marriage, Ari is »

Entourage Review

2 June 2015 9:46 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Celebrity culture is something that society will always obsess over, and no show offered a more glamorized, bro-fueled take on Hollywood than HBO’s Entourage – loosely based on the wild life of producer Mark Wahlberg. Once fans heard Jane’s Addiction kick in while flashy neon lights whizzed by, they knew it was only a matter of time before Vincent Chase and his rag-tag crew started hollering at hotties, pounding expensive alcohol and attacking Hollywood with their special brand of drunken ambition.

Every season of Entourage is about the bond between Vince and his crew, and maybe that’s why Doug Ellin’s Entourage feature film feels lost amidst the glitz and glamour of California’s biggest and brightest stars. The same cliquey culture that HBO satirically mocked once a week ends up commandeering Vince’s latest career crisis, and Ellin finds himself wasting time on vanity cameos and egotistical »

'Entourage' Cameos: Busey, Spade, Grammer on Playing Themselves

2 June 2015 7:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

If Entourage delivers as many big laughs as it does cameos, it should be in good shape: The movie version of the HBO series, opening June 12, is stuffed with at least 50 familiar faces. The Hollywood Reporter issued a short questionnaire to four of them to learn a bit more about the payoffs and pitfalls of playing oneself in its popular send-up of the Hollywood scene. Here then are responses from Emily Ratajkowski, Gary Busey (who replied via an all-caps email, faithfully reproduced here), David Spade and Kelsey Grammer, all of whom play some version of themselves in Entourage. Entourage Director Says Gary Busey Showed Up to Shoot His Cameo and Didn't Remember He'd Done the TV Show First

28 May 2015 5:42 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

That's just so Gary Busey. According to Entourage creator and the new film's director, Doug Ellin, the Oscar-nominated actor showed up to the set to shoot a cameo and did not remember ever having a guest appearance on the original HBO show.  The 70-year-old star, whom you may also know as the bad guy in every '80s action movie, was in a memorable 2004 episode called "Busey and the Beach." Yes, the episode was even named after Busey! In what Ellin described in an interview with AOL Build as "one of my favorite moments in the history of my career," he told Busey on set, "we're going to do this just like we did last time." Ellin recalled Busey »

Gary Busey Forgot That Gary Busey Was on Entourage

When Gary Busey showed up on set at the Entourage movie, he needed a reminder how to be like Gary Busey. Speaking at AOL Build, writer and director Doug Ellin recalls telling Busey, "'Gary, we're just going to do this just like we did it the last time,' and I swear to God he wasn't joking, he goes, 'What do you mean, the last time?' I go, 'The show.' 'I did the show?' And I go, 'Are you fucking with me right now?' And he wasn't. I don't think he remembered it." The first time when he was on the show, though, Ellin remembers that Busey told him, "Doug, I won't give you your words, but what I will give you is the truth." Busey made a number of appearances on the show, and every time, Kevin Connolly said it was like "bracing for a hurricane. »

Playboy Mansion Hosts ‘The Entourage Movie’ Screening

21 May 2015 9:50 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

For a movie that embraces its love of Los Angeles, Wednesday night’s preview screening of Warner Bros.’ “The Entourage Movie” could not have been at a more appropriate locale — Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills.

About 50 guests, mostly male, took in the screening aimed at building buzz in advance of the June 3 opening. Hefner did not attend but made sure four Playboy Playmates (Alana Campos, Kayla Collins, Carly Lauren, Heather Rae Young) played host and welcomed guests in style.

Rhys Coiro, who plays Billy Walsh, the director of the fictional “Medellin” movie, was the only cast member to attend.

Private screenings have been held in recent months at Mark Wahlberg’s house in Los Angeles — attended by more than a dozen NBA players — and for the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team and at Seattle Seahawks headquarters on Tuesday.

Laughter dominated throughout the 104-minute playing time, particularly for Kevin Dillon, »

Geordie Shore's Charlotte Crosby has unleashed a shock attack on her co-star Gary Beadle, claiming that he cheated on his girlfriend with her.

This series of the MTV hit has seen Crosby struggling to cope with the fact that Beadle is dating Lillie Lexie Gregg, but she has now told The Sun that viewers didn't get to see the full story.

"None of this was explained on the show but Gary had lied all about him and Lillie," she said. "They'd been together while he was still having sex with me."

Crosby added that she doesn't expect Beadle and Gregg's relationship to last because it will have a negative impact on his image on Geordie Shore.

"He'll get really boring [on the show] and he'll hate that, so then he might finish with her, then string her along," she said. "He's a good actor, like making people believe he ever cared for me. »

Upfronts Analysis: Freshman Series Renewal Rate Improves as Nets Favor Sibling Studios

18 May 2015 7:35 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Upfront season is all about the search for primetime’s Next Big Thing. But for a studio, the win doesn’t come until a series is renewed for season two and beyond.

For all the upheaval in TV, the 2014-15 season generally proved fertile for Big Four broadcast nets. The renewal rate of scripted series introduced during the September-May frame is higher than it has been since at least 2009-10 for all but NBC, according to research by Variety Insight.

ABC renewed seven of its 11 new series for a second round in 2015-16, compared to three of 14 from the 2013-14 season. CBS picked up five of its eight freshman shows, compared to two out of eight from the class of 2013-14. Fox renewed three out of eight, an improvement over two of eight from last year. NBC so far has renewed one out of a total of 10 scripted series introduced during the past season, »

Upfronts 2015: The Best, Worst and Weirdest Moments of TV’s Marathon Week

The curtain came down on the 2015 upfronts in the wee hours of Friday morning when the last hardy souls cleared out of CW’s thank-god-it’s-finally-over bash at Park Avenue Spring in Gramercy Park.

TV’s marathon week seems to grow longer every year, with more parties and related events added to the already grueling schedule of network programming presentations. As always, there were highlights, lowlights and head-scratching moments to remember. To use a metric that everyone in showbiz can understand — awards shows — here’s our rundown of the week that was.

Best dressed network ad sales chief: NBCUniversal’s Linda Yaccarino, who hit the stage three times in four days with presentations at NBC (Monday), NBCUniversal Hispanic Group (Tuesday) and NBCUniversal Cable (Thursday).

Best goofy video to start a presentation: Stephen Colbert and Leslie Moonves at CBS. A couple of hams.

Upfronts Day 1: TV Reboots, Music on the Menu at NBC, Fox

11 May 2015 4:05 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Day one of upfronts week began Monday with Bob Greenblatt acknowledging NBC’s “ups and downs” during the past season and ended with Gary Newman and Dana Walden promising to end the vicious cycle of “erratic scheduling” by splitting Fox’s dramas into two half-seasons every year.

In between, both networks touched on a lot of similar ground in their presentations, in ways that are telling about the state of the biz. Here are a few highlights from NBC’s Radio City Music Hall session and Fox’s presentation at the Beacon Theater.

Everything old is new again. NBC gave a big buildup to “Heroes Reborn” coming in the fall. Fox closed its show with the reunion of “The X-Files” gang of Chris Carter, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, who gave a quick wave to the crowd. Actors doing double shifts. Duchovny and Rob Lowe attended both presentations to represent on shows. »
