Streep at 60: More movie discussions to follow but today we're discussing Oscar competitive fields again
(the winner links take you to their acceptance speech)
The Best Actress races of 1982 and 1983 hold special meaning for me as they were my inaugural Oscar years. On April 11th of 1983 I saw my first Oscar ceremony. My only point of reference for the glitzy tradition was that my parents and my older siblings didn't like it -- something about Star Wars being way better than Woody Allen??? --and even though my parents didn't take me to that many movies, I had somehow seen and liked 3 of the 5 Best Picture nominees (Gandhi and the two blockbusters Tootsie & E.T.) For the first two years of my Oscar watching I saw a total of Zero Best Actress nominees. My how life has changed.
1982...Julie Andrews, Victor/Victoria -this is the one I desperately wanted to see,

As a follow up to the 'Streep at 60' posts I thought I'd leave an open discussion thread for each Streep nomination's competition through the years. Her first came for 1978's The Deer Hunter (my take on her role). The nominees were:
Dyan Cannon, Heaven Can WaitPenelope Milford, Coming HomeMaggie Smith, California Suite
Maureen Stapleton, InteriorsMeryl Streep, The Deer Hunter
The only nomination I've never understood from that shortlist is Milford's in Coming Home (a film I otherwise love). The Golden Globes differed slightly, skipping Smith and Milford to honor Carol Burnett in A Wedding and Mona Washbourne in Stevie. I know there was never a chance that Stockard Channing's classic rendition of "Rizzo" in Grease was going to be shortlisted but it's such a film stealing enduring delight I like to pretend that she was.
My vote would go to Maureen Stapleton, who served Woody Allen's Interiors perfectly,

Sandra Bullock is confident she has found the key to success as a romantic comedy star - she's advised actresses wanting to break into the film genre to be unladylike.
The Miss Congeniality actress has won over film audiences for years with her on-screen charm and comedic timing.
But Bullock is convinced her crude behaviour is what keeps fans laughing, and she's taken aim at parents who raise their daughters to be too prissy.
She tells America's Glamour magazine, "(Comedy) is the least respected art form. I grew up (watching) Carol Burnett and Jerry Lewis, and they were brilliant. But a lot of times, girls are raised to be little princesses: Keep our legs crossed and your hands folded in your lap."

Ever-dependable spunky lesbian Rachel Maddow discussed yesterday's quizzical California court decision to uphold the gay marriage ban while letting 18,000 couples slip past the doorman without IDs with her characteristic wit and charm.
Maddow also gave a nice shout-out to the various rallies and demonstrations that took place across the country in the wake of the decision, as well as a plug for the upcoming Meet in the Middle rally in Fresno, CA that is set to re-ignite the movement to get gay marriage legalized once more.
Personally, I'm excited to see Fresno on the map for something other than the utterly bizarre satire soap opera from the '80s that involved Carol Burnett, Charles Grodin and a hell of a lot of raisins. (If you don't know what the hell that's all about, do yourself the favor of checking out the clip below...)

This week, it feels like Star Trek is everywhere. I've read more about old characters and new characters and new actors playing old characters, whether the new movie counts as even-numbered or odd-numbered, and various other lists and updates and theories.
But Trek references have been all over the place for a very long time, with parodies perpetrated by everyone from Carol Burnett to Miss Piggy to Beavis and Butthead. The Internet has a wealth of home-grown mash-ups and spoofs and fan fiction. I like the bunnies doing Wrath of Khan in 30 seconds, myself, but I just saw Khan for the first time last month so I'm enjoying all the jokes related to that movie more than usual.
Here's a list of seven of the most memorable Star Trek spoofs and parodies from film and TV over the years. I've even included a few video clips. I'm sure there are

Where is Alan Alda? Okay sure, we all know where he is, keeping busy with the likes of Diminished Capacity, Flash of Genius, and Nothing But the Truth. But where is Alan Alda, leading man? He might be in his '70s, but he's still got his classic Aldaness. It's great that he's still around, but the world hasn't seen him nab the lead big-screen credit in 19 years -- since he wrote, directed, and starred in Betsy's Wedding in 1990.
The world needs more leading-man Alda. But I'll take it a step further: We need another film starring Alda and Carol Burnett. Below you can watch a clip from one of his own -- The Four Seasons, where Alan and Carol lay in bed while their friend and his younger lover get much too vocal in an adjacent room, if you know what I mean. (The clip also features Rita Moreno and the late Jack Weston.

The guest-acting races at the Emmy Awards are dominated by TV old-timers. Last year, the average age of the 22 nominees in the four categories — guest actor and actress in both comedy and drama series — was just over 62 years old. And three of the four winners were that age or older when they took to the stage last fall to accept: comedy-series guest-actor Tim Conway ("30 Rock") was 74, and comedy-series guest-actress Kathryn Joosten ("Desperate Housewives") was 68. And Glynn Turman , guest actor in a drama series ("In Treatment"), was weeks away from turning 63.
Only Cynthia Nixon, winner of guest actress in a drama series, was well below that benchmark, at 42. Nixon won for her stand-out performance on "Law & Order: Svu" as a woman battling multiple personality disorder. That role was the polar opposite of her other Emmy Award-winning work as the always-in-control Miranda on "Sex and the City." Nixon credits that 2004 win as

Fans of Gilmore Girls watched Alexis Bledel's Rory grow from a prep school teenager into a college co-ed.
Now Bledel will be showing up as a university graduate who's about to experience a "pre-life crisis" in her new film Post-Grad.
According to the MTV Movies Blog, Bledel plays Ryden Malby, a young woman who leaves college and "the slow process of finding a new life, a new job and new love."
The film also stars Jane Lynch and Carol Burnett, which means it should at least a little hilarious. I mean, come on — those two women alone are easily two of the funniest on film. Together, they can only create pure magic. Burnett plays a "grumpy grandma" and Lynch is her daughter-in-law — I'm already excited.
According to Wikipedia, bisexual musician Missy Higgins is rumored to be working on songs for the film's soundtrack, which would give the movie a

The 81st annual Academy Awards is now history and Slumdog Millionaire was top dog in the winner's circle with 8 Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle. Kate Winslet won Best Actress for The Reader. In the Best Actor category there was a clear upset with Sean Penn winning the prize for playing the gay rights activist in Milk, despite the smart money being on sentimental favorite Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler. Best Supporting Actress was Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The late Heath Ledger was awarded Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight. In a moving and bittersweet moment, his family accepted on his behalf. Refreshingly, Kate Winslet, one of the most brilliant actresses working today, finally learned to deliver a concise and genuinely moving acceptance speech instead of the rambling
