Kaecilius, Mordo and the Ancient One Get Doctor Strange Character Posters

22 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Yesterday, Marvel unleashed the first three character posters from the highly-anticipated Doctor Strange, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, Rachel McAdams as Night Nurse and Benedict Wong as Wong, along with new motion posters for each character. It seems that was just the beginning of this one-sheet rollout, with three new character posters featuring Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo and Mads Mikkelsen as the main villain, Kaecilius. Don't be surprised if another trio of posters arrives tomorrow to ring in the weekend.

Tilda Swinton's casting as The Ancient One was quite controversial for a number of fans, since the character was typically portrayed as an Asian male in the comics. C. Robert Cargill, who co-wrote the script with director Scott Derrickson and Jon Spaihts, revealed in a podcast earlier this year that The Ancient One is the equivalent of Star Trek's Kobayashi Maru, »

Earlier today, Marvel Studios announced that fans will be treated to a sneak peek of the new Marvel Phase 3 adventure Doctor Strange with a special theatrical event on Monday, October 10. We also showed you new character posters featuring Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Night Nurse (Rachel McAdams) and Wong (Benedict Wong). Now we have new motion posters featuring all three characters. Marvel also released an IMAX trailer today with brand new footage, to get fans excited for the November 4 debut.

Doctor Strange will mark Marvel's second Phase 3 movie, behind this summer's blockbuster Captain America: Civil War, which currently has the biggest worldwide box office total of any movie this year, with $1.15 billion. Marvel's brand new adventures that introduce new characters into the McU, such as last year's Ant-Man, typically don't bring in huge numbers like the studio's blockbuster sequels, but they typically fare well. Benedict Cumberbatch says he almost missed out on Doctor Strange role, confirms Avengers: Infinity War appearance

In less than a month, Marvel Studios will unleash its latest superhero franchise as Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange. However, speaking to Empire, the British actor has revealed that he almost missed out due to his commitments to a stage production of Hamlet.

“[I] really did think I had to kiss it goodbye,” said Cumberbatch. “If you can’t jump on board when the ride’s going past, that’s usually it. So the hugest compliment they paid me was to come back to me. It motivated me to try to fulfill their faith in me.”

As it happened, director Scott Derrickson felt that Cumberbatch was the only fit for the role, despite meeting with Jared Leto, Ryan Gosling and Joaquin Phoenix, so Marvel chief Kevin Feige pushed the film back from its original summer date in order to secure Cumberbatch’s participation. »

Marvel Studios came under fire this year for its casting on Doctor Strange, receiving criticism in some quarters for the “whitewashing” of The Ancient One, with Tilda Swinton set to portray a character generally depicted as an elderly Asian male. Swinton has previously shared her thoughts on the controversy, and now director Scott Derrickson has weighed in during an interview with the Los Angeles Daily News, where he explained his casting choice:

Derrickson went on to reveal that by switching the race of the Ancient One, he was convinced to add Wong (Benedict Wong) into the film, having initially been reluctant to include him »
