The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

[Blu-Review] Deadwood: The Complete Series

21 December 2010 9:11 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It’s a shame that Deadwood ended up just like Carnivale and Rome: a fantastic series canceled far, far too early on. How a series like Entourage runs as long as it has and a fantastic epic like this old-school styled western series gets axed the way it did is utterly baffling. Despite being only three seasons long, this is one of the most sprawling series ever put on the small screen. It’s a tale of greed, betrayal and all that classical good stuff.

Shakespeare is the best analogy to use for this series. David Milch‘s series is full of classical themes and archetypes. The language fits perfectly into Bill Shakespeare’s mold. There’s fluidity to nearly every line delivered. If you’re one of those readers who usually despised reading Shakespeare’s work being unable to understand his language, you shouldn’t have that problem here. »

Gift Guide Countdown #3 Deadwood The Complete Series Bluray

30 November 2010 8:54 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

One of the greatest television programs ever just got better. If you've never seen Deadwood just buy this right now. The image quality will blow your mind. Running for three seasons this show is one of the great hallmarks in the history of the TV western. But unlike what had come before this was far more realistic than network TV would have ever allowed, using incredibly coarse language as just one of many carefully researched components that made Deadwoods fanciful blend of history and storytelling work so well. Besides the unmistakable historicity of the sets and costumes was the a sense of human civilization at its most raw and desperate. I finished the series a while ago and can't wait to go back to it in Hi-Def glory.  It left me in awe of the dark depravity and shining diginity these characters embody. Blu-Ray Review: HBO’s ‘Deadwood: The Complete Series’ Archives Incredible Drama

21 November 2010 11:39 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Just in time for the holidays, HBO’s brilliant “Deadwood” has been chosen for induction into the complete series Blu-ray catalog of the most important TV network in the last twenty years. Very few HBO series are available in complete series HD sets from HBO (“Band of Brothers,” “Rome,” “The Pacific”) and while fans of “The Sopranos,” “The Wire,” and “Six Feet Under” may finally have their day next holiday season, this one belongs to David Milch’s masterpiece.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

The 36 episodes of Milch’s brilliant deconstruction of the TV Western have been segmented on 13 discs — four per season and a disc of bonus material. Essentially, this is nothing more than an HD translation of what was released two years ago on standard disc. If you’re still dreaming of that oft-rumored movie that would tie up all the loose ends of this canceled-too-soon program than you’ll have to keep dreaming. »

DVD Review: MacGruber

MacGruber

Stars: Will Forte, Val Kilmer, Ryan Phillippe, Kristen Wiig, Powers Boothe | Written by Will Forte, John Solomon, Jorma Taccone | Directed by Jorma Taccone

Former special operative MacGruber has spent the past 10 years in hiding, having sworn off a life of crime fighting following the death of his fiancee. But when MacGruber’s former commanding officer (Boothe) approaches him with news that his sworn enemy Dieter Von Cunth (Kilmer) has stolen a nuclear warhead, MacGruber comes out of retirement to take on one last job.

Of course MacGruber can’t work alone, so he assembles a team of experts – whom he accidentally kills – then assembles a second team that includes Lt. Dixon Piper (Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Wiig) with plans to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. Even if it does involve some rather unorthodox methods, ridiculous disguises, and lots of witty one-liners!

Blu-Ray Review: Ridiculous ‘MacGruber’ Wears Out Repetitive Routine

13 September 2010 1:05 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Is anyone surprised that a 20-second sketch from “Saturday Night Live” literally comes apart at the seams when it’s stretched into a feature film? Wouldn’t you have been more surprised if “MacGruber,” recently released on DVD and Blu-ray, had actually worked?

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

It’s undeniably bad but I didn’t find “MacGruber” nearly as abrasive as many critics, including our esteemed Patrick McDonald, who absolutely loathed the comic venture starring Will Forte, Kristin Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, and Val Kilmer. While I can see why some critics wished they could head for the exits before the end of the press screening, there’s enough go-for-broke chutzpah on display in “MacGruber” that I can almost admire the attempt to make this impossible project come together. Don’t get me wrong. I would never recommend this broken comedy but it’s not as horrible as you’ve heard.

MacGruber - Blu-ray Review

Another Saturday Night Live character makes the leap to the big screen. and comes up short. I.m sure fans of the MacGyver clone will find hilarity but I only found myself thinking how if I had a raw egg, paper clip, and AA battery that I might find a way out of viewing the film. Dieter von Cunth (Val Kilmer) has stolen the world.s most powerful nuclear missile and has nefarious plans for it. Col. Faith (Powers Boothe) takes his assistant Lt. Piper (Ryan Phillippe) track down the only man that can stop Cunth, who just happens to have a grudge against Cunth. That man is MacGruber (Will Forte) who has supposedly been dead for the last »

Lr's The Blu Room: MacGruber Review (Blu-Ray)

MacGruber Blu-RayUNIVERSAL Home ENTERTAINMENT2010/Rated R & Unrated/Running Time 91 & 95minsAvailable September 7 – List Price $39.98Just because it makes a hilarious series of SNL skits, doesn't mean it would make a good movie. MacGruber is one of those films I watched in a theater and constantly muttered to myself “What the f*** is this?” I don't mind the idea behind the story, which basically takes elements from TV's MacGuyer and adds them to a ridiculous mullet-headed fool, but the film gets sooo asinine and stupid by tripping on its own ambitions. Star and writer Will Forte along with director/co-writer Jorma Taccone try too damn hard. Their attempt to expand upon their original material with extreme vulgarity and bathroom humor is so over-the-top, its no wonder that Paramount Pictures, the studio which produces and distributes most of the SNL movie adaptions, passed on the project. Makes me miss the days of Jake and Elwood. »

Ashton Kutcher plays a spy longing for the suburban life and Katherine Heigl portrays a suburban woman longing for a little excitement in her life. It's a match made in Hollywood! Our own Jenni Miller wrote: "It's the summer movie equivalent of Cheetos - totally unnatural, bad for you, possibly cancerous, but a guilty pleasure to indulge in with your girlfriends, possibly while drunk." The summer's almost over; will you take the dare? Rent it.

While acknowledging that there's not much competition in the category, Eric D. Snider declared MacGruber "the funniest Saturday Night Live-based film since Wayne's World. We'd have breathed a sigh of relief if it were merely not awful. The fact that it's actually pretty good, a gleefully silly action parody that doesn't run out of steam before it's over, is just icing on the cake." Will Forte and Kristen Wiig take the leads, »

Maury Chaykin obituary

19 August 2010 10:22 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Actor who was at his best in shadowy roles

The actor Maury Chaykin, who has died aged 61 after a heart-valve infection, was an American and a Canadian citizen, and his career reflected his dual nationality. In the Us, he was a familiar face, if not a recognisable name, playing small but telling roles in major films. His breakthrough came in Dances With Wolves (1990), playing Major Fambrough, who sends Kevin Costner on his frontier assignment and then kills himself. Chaykin's only leading role was in the cable TV series A Nero Wolfe Mystery (2001), as the titular detective who refuses to leave his house, delegating that to his assistant (Timothy Hutton).

In Canada, Chaykin was something of a national treasure. He won a Genie award for best actor for his performance as a Brian Wilson-like burned-out rock star in Whale Music (1994), gave remarkable performances in three films directed by Atom Egoyan »

Summer Of '85: 25 Years, 25 Films

The summer of 1985. Has it really been twenty-five years. Wow! I don't really feel old, but its amazing that era was so long ago and yet the memories feel like yesterday. I was ten going on eleven and enjoying my summer break. Though my parents wouldn't let me leave my neighborhood with my friends, they always took me to the cinema as often as they could, which is where my love of movies comes from. I consider myself fortunate to have shared some great movie moments with my family and with my parents coming to town to visit me this summer, we hope to have some more.Hollywood still makes great movies today, but the eighties were a time when most of the movies you saw were good. At least they seemed to be good at that early age. Time can often be cruel and with maturity comes the revelation »

Top Ten Tuesday: Best Westerns (Not Motels)

15 June 2010 11:11 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Six-shooters and horses, brothels and saloons… the western film is as American as apple pie. Back in the early days, the hero and the villain was always clearly defined, the good guy always won and got the gal, and nobody ever bled when they got shot. Oh, have things have changed over the years. In the sixties and seventies, all that changed when filmmakers such as Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone decided the genre needed a reality check, stepping up the violence and pursuing more authentic westerns. In the last 20-30 years, the western has suffered a slow decline, but it’s not dead yet. Today, the western is as diverse as the American culture, and albeit a rare treat, the genre has become a creative playground for talented filmmakers to experiment and honor the classics at the same time, resulting in some very unique films including Jim Jarmusch »

MacGruber: A Bad SNL Skit Turned Full Length Movie

23 May 2010 4:25 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

MacGruber is the latest Saturday Night Live skit to get the full movie treatment. Like those that went before it, this means the movie's entertainment value is stretched thin over the length of a feature film. There are a few fairly funny jokes in the movie but not nearly enough to cover the running length. As for storyline and plot, well there's that skit thing again. MacGruber is a spoof of the old MacGyver TV series that ran in the mid-eighties and starred Richard Dean Anderson. The hero didn't use guns but rather fashioned weapons from ordinary household goods and materials. MacGruber (Will Forte) is supposed to have the same talent but we never get to see him do anything inventive except tear people's throats out. At the start of the movie MacGruber is recruited by Colonel James Faith (Powers Boothe) to »
