Robby Benson: Inside His 'Brutal Experience' of Four Heart Surgeries

4 October 2012 3:30 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Gasping for breath after running up a steep San Francisco hill, Robby Benson began to faint. He grabbed for a parking meter to break his fall. Then he became violently sick to his stomach. It all happened on location during the filming of Die Laughing, in which he starred, co-wrote and was a producer. He was in his early 20s, a onetime teen idol now transitioning into bigger challenges with the promise of a long, successful career in Hollywood. He didn't want to tell the truth: doctors had found a heart murmur when he was a teenager and for years he'd suffered similar symptoms. »

The 8 Essential (and Fabulous) Facts About Marvin Hamlisch

8 August 2012 8:23 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Marvin Hamlisch, one of the single most accomplished musicians of the 20th century, died Monday at the age of 68 after a brief illness. This is one of the more grueling celebrity deaths for me. Titans shouldn't ever leave us, you know? Particularly the unbelievably productive ones. Fortunately, I've created a fact sheet featuring Hamlisch's most noteworthy (and conversation-worthy) trivia bits and accomplishments. Now he'll definitely be with us forever.

1. His first job was as a rehearsal pianist for Barbra Streisand

If you know anything about Hamlisch, you know his thriving partnership with Barbra Streisand is part of his career's backbone. Their collaboration began unceremoniously during the Broadway production of Funny Girl when Hamlisch acted as Streisand's rehearsal pianist, but the two connected, and they'd stay bonded through work on The Way We Were, Streisand's 1994 concert tour, The Mirror Has Two Faces, a number of TV specials. He even performed at her 1998 wedding. »

Beauty And The Beast 3D

Review by LondonFilmFan

Stars (the voices of): Paige O’Hara, Robby Benson, Richard White, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbury, David Ogden Stiers | Written by Linda Woolverton, Roger Allers | Directed by Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise

With the immense box office success of The Lion King‘s 3D conversion last year, it was only a matter of time before similar films followed suit. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is highly regarded as an animated classic, so who is to argue with a 3D theatrical re-release then? Well, this reviewer volunteers (may as well add “as tribute” since this unpopular opinion just might spell my end). Over twenty years after its initial release, there seems little reason for the film to be occupying cinema space again.

While the hand-drawn animation has an uneven charm, there isn’t much that holds up visually when compared with modern animation. »

How we made: Don Hahn and Paige O'Hara on Beauty and the Beast

1 May 2012 2:17 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

'When it got Oscar nominated, I went running around the garden in my underwear'

Don Hahn, producer

Beauty and the Beast was one of the last great fairytales Disney hadn't done, so we spent about nine months developing it. It was the late 1980s and we were working with fantastic animators. I thought it was going Ok. We flew to Florida to show it to Jeffrey Katzenberg and the other executives. When the lights came up, Jeffrey said: "Ay-ay-ay, this is not going in the right direction."

This was my first film as a producer and it was horrifying. We brought in new directors, and songwriters Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Howard came up with the idea of having enchanted objects singing and talking, and suggested making the film a fully realised musical. This made it more of a fantasy, so more appropriate for animation. After that, it really took off. »

Should Corey Feldman Return as Donatello in the Ninja Turtles Reboot?

30 March 2012 6:16 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

You'll notice that in today's cinematic landscape, most major characters needing a voice in a CGI or motion capture family film are supplied by an established A-list actor (see Johnny Depp in Rango) or a known celebrity (Taylor Swift is fourth billed in Dr. Seuss' the Lorax). Twenty-two years ago, way back in 1990, that wasn't the case. Take Beauty and the Beast for instance. In 1991, Robby Benson, the lead voice actor in the film, had been absent from the spotlight for many years and was cast primarily for his talents on the microphone, not any sort of marquee value. Angela Lansbury served as the only real stunt casting. If the film was made today, we'd see Anne Hathaway serving as Beauty, with Hugh Jackman stepping in as the Beast. Even a smaller part, like Chip or Stove, would be supplied by any given member of the Apatow repertoire.

George Lucas/Red Tails Well, Steven Soderbergh/Haywire Flops, Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close Disappoints

21 January 2012 5:10 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Sandra Bullock, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Kate Beckinsale/Underworld Awakening vs. Jean Dujardin/The Artist: Box Office Directed by Anthony Hemingway and executive-produced by Stars Wars' George Lucas, Red Tails opened at no. 2 with an acceptable $6.02 million on Friday, Jan. 20, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Its per-theater average was a good $2,398. Though certainly not a bad opening for a socially conscious period drama lacking a major star attraction — apart from Lucas' name, that is — Red Tails' performance seems considerably less impressive when one factors in that it cost a reported $58 million. And that movies such as Red Tails, dealing with American issues of interest to (some) Americans, don't travel very well abroad unless they have a star of Leonardo DiCaprio- or Johnny Depp-caliber to make it more attractive to international audiences. Despite all the awards-season buzz, Tate Taylor's The Help, »

Robbie Benson Talks Beauty and the Beast 3D, in theaters now

Walt Disney's 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast is back in theaters for a limited 3D release to celebrate its 20th Anniversary. Already a box office hit its first week back on screens, we now celebrate this timeless tale's second weekend out with a chat from its leading Beast, Robby Benson.

We are longtime fans of Robby, so it was a great honor to speak with the man behind the voice of Beauty and the Beast's title character, an arrogant Prince turned into a frightful monster, who must earn the love and respect of another before breaking the spell.

A voice actor since childhood, and star of such live-action classics as Ice Castles and Ode to Billy Joe, we chatted with Robby Benson about the legacy of Beauty and the Beast, his work looping Godzilla, King of the Monsters! »

Interview: Robby Benson On 'Beauty And The Beast 3D'

20 January 2012 12:58 PM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Beauty and the Beast” is one of the Disney animated movies that came out during the studios’ golden age. The entire production is a true example of catching lightning in a bottle where it’s a perfect combination of animation, music, direction and voice actors. When you’re dealing with such a wonderfully complex character such as the Beast, you need the perfect voice to convey all of those emotions and perfectly blend it with the animation shown onscreen. They found that in Robby Benson, a seasoned Broadway and film actor who captured all of those elements and now has one of the most memorable voices with his work as the Beast. »

Interview: Paige O'Hara On 'Beauty And The Beast 3D'

15 January 2012 5:38 AM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

Every other girl who’s watched the animated Disney movies has a particular princess that’s their favorite. It could be the wishful Snow White or the fiery Jasmine, but one of my favorites always happened to be Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.” Instead of singing about how much she’d love to find true love, the girl is craving adventure. She ends up getting her wish in a rather enchanted way as she is entangled in a action-packed love story. The film captures the fantastic journey of Belle (voice of Paige O’Hara), a bright and beautiful young woman who’s taken prisoner by a hideous beast (voice of Robby Benson) in his »

Mark Wahlberg/Contraband Surprises, Meryl Streep/The Iron Lady Strong: Box Office

14 January 2012 2:39 AM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Ben Foster, Contraband According to Deadline.com, this four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend the North American box office could reach $165 million — or up about 4% compared to last year. Considering the disappointing returns in late 2011, a modest increase is good news indeed for the jittery Hollywood studios. Helping things out are the Mark Wahlberg crime thriller Contraband, which earned an estimated $9 million on Friday and may reach $30 million by Monday evening. Box Office Mojo was expecting the film to bring in only $18.5 million. Anyhow, if those early estimates are correct, that's a solid start for a movie that reportedly cost $25 million (not including marketing/distribution expenses). A remake of Óskar Jónasson's 2008 Icelandic hit Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Contraband was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the original film's star-producer. In addition to Wahlberg Contraband features Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, and J.K. Simmons. Disney's 3D-ification of »

Film Review: ‘Beauty and the Beast 3D’ Brings Magic to New Generation in Unnecessary Dimension

13 January 2012 7:49 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It is a tale as old as time, and a film almost as old as I am. After the success that Disney had bringing “The Lion King” back to theaters this past September, it is no surprise that they have decided to bring four more films back to the theaters, starting with the classic tale “Beauty and the Beast,” which was first released in November of 1991. And while it is exciting to see these films again on a large screen with surround sound, I can’t help but wish the third dimension could have been kept out of this one.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The classic story of a young girl who is forced to live with a beast-man in a giant castle as a trade for her father’s life, the story of “Beauty and the Beast,” is one of the most brilliant ever seen in a Disney film. The film »

'Beauty And The Beast' Voice Cast: Where Are They Now?

13 January 2012 12:44 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For those of us who grew up during the "Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" era of Disney films, the re-releasing of these childhood classics hits on some very nostalgic nerves. At least for this writer, anyway. I have very specific childhood memories tied to all of those animated classics and am looking forward to seeing "Beauty and the Beast 3D" during its limited release (which began today).

Anyway, in thinking about the magic involved in this film - the first animated movie ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar- I can't help but wonder about the talented voice actors who brought the characters to life. Where are they now? Click through to see what the actors who brought Belle, Beast and Mrs. Potts to life are up to now.

It was 21 years ago that the story of Belle (Paige O'Hara) and Beast (Robby Benson) flooded into theatres and enchanted audiences with the fairytale story of a small-town girl who, in order to save her kooky, inventor dad, ends up a captive of Beast, a prince under a spell that can only be broken by true love.

Though based on the 18th work by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, Disney's instant-classic version added talking objects - a candlestick, a clock, a teapot, etc. voiced by the likes of Jerry Orbach and Angela Lansbury - and a fiercely independent heroine who was able to see beyond Beast's horrific outside to the loving heart that was beating within. Nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, which was a major coup for an animated film, it's being brought back to theatres this weekend in 3D, allowing young parents to introduce the movie to their »
