Film Review: ‘Safelight’

19 July 2015 9:25 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A sensitive teenager with cerebral palsy, a hooker with a heart of gold, and various other sentient cliches collide in “Safelight,” a bland and unremarkable tale of sad souls and dead-end circumstances from first-time feature director Tony Aloupis. A handful of solid performances and some subtle ’70s period detailing are hardly enough to recommend this flat, predictable drama, which will rely on its few cast names (including Juno Temple and Christine Lahti) to draw a few eyeballs in simultaneous limited/VOD release; like most of its characters, it looks to be headed nowhere fast.

You wouldn’t necessarily know exactly when “Safelight” is taking place, aside from a brief mention of Vietnam and the old-school black-and-white camera used by the lead character. Photography represents one of the few bright spots in the life of shy 17-year-old Charles (Evan Peters, taking an indie breather between “X-Men” movies), who works behind the »

To the Lighthouse: Aloupis Crafts Woefully Sluggish Tale of Truck Stop Tendencies

Serving up a generous helping of outsider character study with teenage romance tinged by a demure, rosy hued examination of prostitution is director Tony Aloupis’ debut, Safelight, a film collecting a surprisingly talented cast considering its rather tepid platitudes. A 1970s era slice of nostalgic beats, the truckstop set film is neither a notable throwback to the era it wishes to recall nor an engaging examination of disparate souls coming together across the aching chasms of abuse and cruelty they’ve suffered through.

Disabled teen Charles (Evan Peters) struggles to get through a rather humdrum existence. His mother abandoned him when he was a child, and he’s now stuck caring for his ailing father (Jason Beghe) while he works at a truckstop counter under the caring eye of Peg (Christine Lahti). He has a passion for photography, »

Going Clear review: The film Scientologists don't want you to see

26 June 2015 5:56 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Director: Alex Gibney; Writer: Alex Gibney; Starring: Mike Rinder, Marty Rathbun, Paul Haggis, Jason Beghe; Running time: 119 mins; Certificate: 15

Bring me Louis Theroux! There are many moments during this disappointing depiction of Scientology where you may be crying out that very same plea.

Unlike the staggeringly good Amy, this documentary fails to muster any sense of objectivity towards the subject matter and frequently comes across as overly manipulative - the very trait it seeks to expose and demonise when it comes to Scientology. It's epitomised by the use of footage featuring key figures in the religion, including John Travolta, Tom Cruise and its founder L Ron Hubbard, which often dwells or freeze frames on the blazing eyes or wild laughter in a bid to make them look crazy. It devalues its objectives.

Such subjective treatment needs a stronger authorial presence in the film, beyond the occasional off-camera voice of the interviewer. »

Warren Leight Teases ‘Svu’ Crossover Event with ‘Chicago Fire’ & ‘P.D.’

28 April 2015 5:27 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

NBC kicks off its second mega-crossover event with “Law & Order: Svu,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” Tuesday night with Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson heading to the Windy City for an unsolved murder rape case.

Last year’s crossover of Dick Wolf’s NBC trifecta was a hit for the network, as a near-season high for “Chicago Fire,” while bringing in the best ratings of the season for both “P.D.” and “Svu.”

“It’s a little bit like ‘Justice League’ — it’s fun to watch the different heroes get together,” “Svu” showrunner Warren Leight tells Variety of the crossover’s popularity, adding that this week’s episodes have purposeful storylines, rather than simply being slapped onto the slate for more big numbers. “There was great chemistry between Benson and Voight (Jason Beghe), which was worth revisiting.”

The story sensibly brings the three casts together, thanks to a crime launched »
