The Mob Doctor Sends Jennifer Beals to Fight Sexism in Organized Crime

27 November 2012 4:34 AM, PST | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

I’m not entirely familiar with how organized crime works in the real world – to be perfectly honest, I’m not even sure I could handle knowing if something like the Mafia was operating in my city without obsessively locking my doors and being extremely polite to every single Italian I meet – but shows like The Mob Doctor have always portrayed these groups as being predominantly run by men. I’m not saying that’s not accurate, I’m just saying I don’t know to what degree of accuracy it is. Are real life mobs really sexist and not allowing women to run things? The Mob Doctor thinks so and has set out to prove women can carry their own weight in a corrupt world run by men. And to get the job done, Jennifer Beals was cast to show these men how it’s done.

Monster Diva: Why "Bride of Frankenstein" Is the Gayest Monster Movie

31 October 2012 2:36 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Director James Whale

Released in 1935, Bride of Frankenstein was helmed by openly gay director (in the 20s, people!), James Whale and starred Boris Karloff as the monster. It is a sequel to Frankenstein. And it’s pretty gay. Here’s why: Na, na, na, diva is a female version of a monsta. The aforementioned Bride is a Diva. If you enjoy making lists as much as I do then certainly somewhere between homeroom and American History in 2001 you realized that the Bride is the only female movie monster.

Elsa Lanchester as The Bride

They try and add Medusa or Cleopatra into lists sometimes, or forgettable daughters of Dracula. But nope, the Bride is the only true and memorable lady monster. Diva. She has the hair and the dress to prove it.

The film’s plot lends itself to a queer lens. Vito Russo argued that Doctor Pretorius (played by alleged gay actor, »

Jim's Notebook: Open to Pretty Little Liars, Dallas and More!

26 October 2012 12:17 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

This week’s Jim’s Notebook gets emptied out with a glance ahead to November, when so many great shows are either premiering or returning with new episodes.

I also take a look at the upcoming new season of Dallas with one of the cast members. And, after getting an early peek at tonight’s episode of Fringe, a non-spoilery plea from yours truly to not miss "The Bullet That Saved The World."

But let’s swing by Rosewood first...

Pretty Little Liars: The annual Halloween episode that aired earlier this week kicked some butt in the ratings but also deepened the mystery of the show, thanks to the expert storytelling of Executive Producer Joseph Dougherty. We definitely had some chilling moments: the lives of both Aria and Spencer were threatened; Mona continued her dastardly ways; someone definitely died and Adam Lambert rocked the Ghost Train.

Cole Hauser is ‘The Virginian’

3 October 2012 6:11 AM, PDT | | See recent LRM Online news »

The Virginian hasn’t been remade in a while, so I guess it’s time. Owen Wister’s novel is perhaps best remembered as the TV series of the same name, which starred James Drury. Other incarnations in 1946 saw Joel McCrea in the title role and in 2000 Bill Pullman took the lead.

Next to fill the saddle will be A Good Day to Die Hard‘s Cole Hauser, who will be joined by Ron Perlman and Jennifer Beals.

The synopsis:

South is the foreman of Sunk Creek Ranch and a feared enforcer for the cattle baron Judge Henry, who took him in after his parents were killed by rustlers. As part of his duties he is to look after a writer from the big city, Owen, who has come out West to research a novel. Owen is appalled at the savagery of the land, in particular the way cattle rustlers are treated. »
