Slaves Of Hollywood - A 1993 film about Hollywood Assistants ripped from today's headlines, sort of.

by Terry Keefe

Back in the mid-90s, Michael Wechsler, Brian Grossman, and myself collaborated with a bunch of great young actors and crew for this micro-budgeted feature film about tortured Hollywood assistants. Alex Simon makes a few cameos also!

As we were going for "theater of the absurd," and (mostly) dark laughs, it isn't the perfect companion to today's headlines, but some of the milieu will be familiar. The stories about Harvey Weinstein abounded even then. In total honesty, I had great bosses in Hollywood, and the film is all based on stories we had heard about Other bosses. The ones you didn't want to work for. There but for the grace of God went we. But Meryl Streep did later call Harvey "God," so it all gets confusing.

We shot this two years before Kevin Spacey tore up the screen as the abusive producer in Swimming With Sharks,

‘The Last Tycoon’ Canceled at Amazon

‘The Last Tycoon’ Canceled at Amazon
Just a couple of weeks after Amazon debuted “The Last Tycoon,” the streaming service has abruptly canceled the F. Scott Fitzgerald drama, Variety confirmed on Saturday.

Amazon Studios scrapped plans for a second season of another Fitzgerald drama, “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” starring Christina Ricci, just a couple of days ago. Both cancellations seem to reflect a sea change at Amazon Studios, one mandated by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Variety broke the news on Friday night that Bezos is pushing Amazon Studios toward a massive strategy shift, looking for the streaming service to find its own global hit like “Game of Thrones.” In an interview, Amazon Studios chief Roy Price said they’re looking for “big shows that can make the biggest difference around the world.”

News also broke Friday of a slew of orders Amazon Studios has made to reflect that broad, global appeal. The streaming service gave series orders to a drama from Wong Kar-wai

Jennifer Beals on Playing the Secretly Biracial Star Margo Taft in ‘The Last Tycoon’

Jennifer Beals on Playing the Secretly Biracial Star Margo Taft in ‘The Last Tycoon’
One of the unexpected joys of Amazon’s “The Last Tycoon,” which debuted in July, is actress Jennifer Beals’ turn as Margo Taft, an ambitious screen siren who is caught between feuding studio heads Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer) and Louis B. Mayer (Saul Rubinek, playing the real-life mogul behind MGM). Margo’s storyline is the liveliest of “The Last Tycoon,” largely due to the vim of Beals herself — after finagling her way into a Brady picture, she demands that the director come to her dressing room and drop his pants, so that she can take the measure of the man who might try to order her around. (Margo doesn’t make the poor sucker go through with it — but the point, as she explains with a sultry air, is that he was willing to.)

But ultimately Margo is nearly undone by a long-buried secret that comes to light mid-season. When her beloved maid Lucille (L. Scott Caldwell) dies

Why Showtime Is Rebooting 'The L Word'

"The world has changed."

Those words, from The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken, describe why Showtime as well as the original cast and producers hope to bring the groundbreaking lesbian drama back for another rebooted season.

On July 11, Showtime announced that it was searching for a new writer — with ties to the lesbian community — to team with Chaiken and original series stars Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey as it hoped to relaunch the series for a new generation.

Sources say that Showtime has narrowed the field to a few new and established showrunners who have...

Film Review: ‘Polina’

Film Review: ‘Polina’
One of the defining movie moments of the last 40 years — a sequence at once ridiculous, iconic, and enthralling — is the ballet-school audition climax of “Flashdance,” in which the aspiring dance superstar played by Jennifer Beals prances and struts and gyrates and, finally, break-dances to the synth-pop glory of Giorgio Moroder and Irene Cara, wowing the world of highbrow snoot and overthrowing it at the same time. “Polina,” co-directed by Valérie Müller and Angelin Preljocaj, turns the mythology of that sequence into a European art film — or, more precisely, stretches it out into a teasingly austere, deliberately paced movie about a young Russian ballerina’s progress from elegant classical drone to free-spirited something-or-other.

Polina (Anastasia Shevtsova) has grown up in a joyless land of oppression, nuclear power plants, and occupational dead ends, and it’s her family’s dream that she’ll use her talent as a dancer to ascend. Her father, Anton
