The Weinsteins unveil early peeks at 'Django,' 'The Master,' and 'Silver Linings' at Cannes

21 May 2012 4:40 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Cannes - The invitation arrived yesterday afternoon, and it immediately got my attention since the giant banner on the front of the Majestic Hotel has been driving me crazy all week long.  It's very simple, just the Saul Bass-style chain design and the title "Django Unchained," but that's enough at this point.  I'm always excited by a new Quentin Tarantino film, but this one in particular tackles subject matter that I find intriguing, and I'm dying to see how it actually plays onscreen. It was an easy decision to make.  Instead of seeing a new film tonight, I put on a »

Movie Poster of the Week: “Elena” and the Top Ten Favorite Posters of Designer Sam Smith

11 May 2012 8:08 AM, PDT | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

Ever since I  first wrote about the work of Sam Smith, back in 2009, I have been wanting to work with him in my capacity (in my other life) as the design director for Zeitgeist Films. In the two and a half years since then, Sam Smith has become one of the most sought-after designers on the independent film circuit with his refreshingly simple, witty and indelibly striking hand-drawn designs (it doesn’t hurt that he also has a great knowledge of both film history and the history of movie poster design). A few months ago I finally got the chance when we decided that we wanted something out of the ordinary to promote our new release of Andrey Zvyagintsev's Elena.

Zvyagintsev’s dark and beautiful film premiered at Cannes last year where it won the Special Jury Prize. For our release this May (it opens next week in the U. »

Academy’s New “Film-To-Film” Preservation Includes The Lady Eve, The Princess Bride, Airplane!

7 May 2012 1:33 PM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has undertaken a unique expansion in film preservation. As the rise of digital technology drastically reduces the availability of film stock, the project accelerates the work of the Academy Film Archive to acquire and create new archival film masters and prints from at-risk elements. Under the banner “Film-to-Film,” the $2 million initiative, approved by the Academy.s Board of Governors, focuses largely on Academy Award®-winning and nominated films from across motion picture history, including works made as recently as the 1990s.

“This is a moment of great transition for our industry, and we are responding to the urgency of that moment,” said Dawn Hudson, Academy CEO. “By increasing our preservation efforts now, we are building a vital pipeline of films and film elements that we will not only safeguard, but also make available for audiences well into the future.”

The BFI create a Neat Trailer for their forthcoming season: The Genius of Hitchcock

2 May 2012 10:00 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Continuing their great work the BFI are basically fulfilling a lifetime’s wish of mine and showing all surviving works of Alfred Hitchcock on the big screen over a three month Hitchapolooza in London and around the UK.

Things kick off in June and among the various events someone, in a moment of mad genius, has decided to show a newly restored print of Blackmail in the British Museum, and if you’ve seen it then you’ll know why, with a live score from Neil Brand as well as numerous other cinematic accoutrements. For me though it’s the chance to see Rear Window, Shadow of a Doubt and dozens of other classics on the big screen. Yes, friends. I am excited.

Taking cues from a number of Hitchcock’s greatest (or, at least, the most well known) films the BFI have just released this short trailer which has »

10 Of Saul Bass' Greatest Title Sequences

25 April 2012 9:22 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The art of movie titles is becoming an increasingly lost one: aside from a few films (the Bond movies) and directors (Steven Spielberg, David Fincher and Jason Reitman always pay particular attention to their credit sequences), it feels like relatively little care is taken over such things, with many movies dumping them altogether. And it's hard not to put that down to the fact that we don't have guys like Saul Bass around anymore.

Bass was a graphic designer from the Bronx who went out West in the 1940s and started working on film ads. After being noticed by Otto Preminger, who would become his collaborator for the next twenty years starting with "Carmen Jones" in 1954, Bass went on to design some of cinema's most iconic title sequences and posters for world-class filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese, often in an instantly recognizable style that remains influential »

Original Karate Kid Ralph Macchio Joins Alfred Hitchock & The Making of Psycho

18 April 2012 5:11 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The original ‘Karate Kid’ Ralph Macchio has joined ‘Alfred Hitchcock And The Making of Psycho’, the upcoming biopic of one of the world’s most beloved filmmakers. Deadline says production begins next month.

Set in 1960, the movie finds Hitchcock at a troubling crossroads in his career having lost some of his audience with “Vertigo” (amazing to think that now) and the struggle he had to convince a studio to finance and distribute his low-rent horror/thriller, for which nobody believed audiences would turn up for such a violent, psychological tale. Paramount had so little faith in the project that they gave Hitch a paltry budget and just let him get on with it without supervision but this would prove to be the best thing that could have happened to cinema. Under pressure, Hitchcock crafted an absolute masterpiece using the limited resources he had at his disposable to the hilt, finding »

First Look: 'Django Unchained' Teaser Poster

12 April 2012 9:40 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

The minimalist teaser poster for Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, has just been released.

Why Leo Missed the 'Titanic' 3D premiere

Showing a broken chain over the silhouette of two gun-toting men – one who sports broken chains – and simply stating "The New Film by Quentin Tarantino – Christmas," the poster channels the style of the late great Saul Bass (whose memorable black-on-red movie poster imagery elevated such titles as Vertigo, West Side Story and Spartacus).

Tarantino's follow-up to Inglourious Basterds follows a former slave-turned-bounty hunter who sets out to rescue his wife from a ruthless plantation owner with the help of his mentor.

Samuel L. Jackson Channels 'Pulp Fiction' for NBA

Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Don Johnson and Kurt Russell also star in the period Western, which Tarantino is calling a "Southern."

First Poster for ‘Django Unchained’

12 April 2012 9:18 AM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

I thought about making some quip about “Unchaining the Django Unchained poster” for the headline but I decided against it. Last night, an International poster appeared on Twitter. Today an official Us version has been released.

Simplistic but kind of too simplistic for the general masses. However, Tarantino’s name is all people need to hear. I like the Saul Bass tribute to it and I’m excited to see more posters for this one. What do you think of the poster? Have you read our script review that we posted almost a year ago? The teaser features two gun-brandishing silhouettes underneath a broken chain, about the only clue to the movie’s title, which is conspicuously missing from the poster. The silhouettes most likely belong to Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, who respectively play the »

AMC is preparing to develop a TV series adaptation of Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman’s new produced comic book, “Thief of Thieves”.

According to Deadline, the show will be a series of heist stories, described by Kirkman as follows: “Much like The Walking Dead brought horror to television in a unique and groundbreaking way, I feel Thief of Thieves can do the same thing for heist stories, showing the humanity of all the characters, including the criminals.”

The story “centers on master thief Conrad Paulson who, while attempting to reconcile with his estranged wife and son, vows to walk the straight and narrow, only to discover he’s completely addicted to the thrill of stealing. Now he must feed his addiction by stealing only what has been stolen, as the Thief of Thieves.”

First Teaser Posters For Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained

11 April 2012 10:42 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

The very first teaser posters for Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming black slavery western Django Unchained are appropriately Saul Bass-like and very spaghetti western-esque which its minimalist design concept and its conscious effort to be very sparse on details. It reminds me actually of the very popular contemporary movement of fan-made posters which usually focus in on one particular image or theme from a movie rather than something a studio would release.

There’s no mention of the film’s title, except in very small writing a note that you should visit UnchainedMovie.com and facebook.com/unchainedmovie, but there’s absolutely no mention of Django Unchained. There’s no tagline beyond “The New Film By Quentin Tarantino” and let’s not forget that this is a huge movie from Sony/The Weinstein Company coming this Christmas and one that stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. See Some Awesome Alternative Posters for 'The Lion King' and More

Since Disney has a style all their own, usually when it comes to promoting their animated classics, or even their films from Pixar Animation, the posters, Blu-Ray/DVD covers, etc. are colorful, bright, and just typical of what we've come to expect from The House of Mouse. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's always interesting to see a completely different artistic take on a familiar brand. CSI's Wallace Langham Investigating Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho

9 April 2012 5:20 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Is it possible for the cast of Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho to get even more impressive? Apparently it is. Read on to find out just who's next and whom he'll be portraying!

According to Variety, "CSI" star Wallace Langham (pictured right) is in talks to play Saul Bass in Sacha Gervasi's Fox Searchlight pic Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.

Written by John McLaughlin, the story chronicles the struggles faced by the iconic helmer and his wife, Alma Reville, during the making of horror classic Psycho. Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren star alongside Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and James D'Arcy as well as Toni Collette, Danny Huston, Michael Stuhlbarg and Michael Wincott.

Bass designed the main titles and handled the storyboards for Psycho and many of Hitchcock's other films despite famously clashing with the headstrong helmer.

Wallace Langham ("CSI") and Kurtwood Smith ("Robocop") have joined the cast of Sacha Gervasi's "Alfred Hitchcock And The Making of Psycho" says The Hollywood Reporter.

Langham would play the legendary Saul Bass who handled the storyboards and title sequence for the film and was instrumental in constructing the infamous shower sequence. Ultimately Bass felt he didn't get enough credit.

Smith would play Geoffrey Shurlock, the head of the MPAA's precursor in the field of censorship - the Motion Picture Production Code. »

Two More Actors Angle Toward ‘Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho’

9 April 2012 4:08 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

It could be said (if such things were even discussed) that Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho has, in terms of quality and quantity, rounded out its cast to a pretty solid degree. You’ve got your two leads (Anthony Hopkins, playing Hitchcock, and Helen Mirren as his wife, Alma) and, perhaps more importantly, a supporting lineup that none of us expected to be so impressive (Scarlett Johansson, James D’Arcy, Jessica Biel, Michael Stuhlbarg, Danny Huston, Toni Collette, and Michael Wincott).

But there’s still a couple of more parts to fill before things go into action, and this is where THR and Variety come in. They tell us, respectively, that Kurtwood Smith (RoboCop, That ’70s Show) and Wallace Langham (CSI, Little Miss Sunshine) have either signed or are in talks for the film, both playing historical figures. The former’s role is that of a slightly less-known Hollywood player — Geoffrey Shurlock, »
