9 March 2016 9:14 AM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

We all know that, the legendary actress Shabana Azmi is someone who minces no words when it comes to 'calling a spade a spade'. And this is something that has always set her apart from all others. Recently, the audience got a (yet another) gist of her upfront nature at the recently held 'Women Of Worth' conclave, wherein she was one of the panellists. When told that the women have always been considered as 'devi' (goddess), she quickly retorted stating, "We do not consider ourselves as 'devi' at all. We just want to be treated equally. You please make a 'devi' out of someone else. By all means, you remain a 'devtaa', but, we (the women) do not wish to be 'devi' at all." She also spoke her heart about the positioning of women in today's world. She said that, right from the time of Shammi Kapoor's films, whenever the girl said no, »

4 March 2016 2:00 AM, PST | BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news »

In the second week Ram Madhvani's Neerja has seen an escalation in ticket sales of the kind rarely witnessed at the box office. According trade information, shows of the highly-acclaimed but poorly-received Aligarh and the political satire Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive had to be cancelled due to poor attendance. Additional shows of Neerja were scheduled in the place of the two poorly-received films. A rare happening at the box office! Says trade analyst Atul Mohan, "Yes , I heard shows of Aligarh and Tere Bin Laden were replaced by Neerja. Not only Mumbai but many other parts of the country. Everybody wants to milk a healthy cow. Neerja is going steady with good footfalls and both Aligarh and Laden failed to live up to audience expectations." Delighted Sonam Kapoor says, "My director Ram Madhvani tells me he is happy. Manoj Bajpayee’s Depiction Of Human Desolation in ‘Aligarh’ Is The Best Since Jennifer Kapoor In ’36 Chowringhee Lane’

24 February 2016 8:10 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

In the acutely thought-provoking Aligarh, which is about a homosexual man’s right to privacy, Manoj Bajpayee, playing the disgraced professor Srinivas Ramchandra Siras, sits alone in his dingy one-bedroom professor’s quarter, with a drink in hand and a Lata Mangeshkar song by his side.

In the semi-darkness, in a room lit by dim hope, Srinivas listens to the Melody Queen’s ‘Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha Pyaar Ke Qaabil Mujhe’, that timeless Madan Mohan composition from the film Anpadh. The song plays on a rickety portable sound machine. But its sound resonates across the professor’s silent universe, like a melodic meteor cutting through a sky of solitude.

It’s a life-defining moment. Director Hansal Mehta holds the unflinchingly intimate camera (Satya Nagpaul’s lensing is lucid, leisurely and lingering) with ruthless resilience on his protagonist Manoj Bajpai’s face. For a good 5-7 minutes we see Bajpai »

“I really believe in the film. I also really believe in what Neerja stood for.” – Sonam Kapoor

20 February 2016 7:12 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

The gorgeous Sonam Kapoor can be seen in the much-awaited and already critically acclaimed Neerja in UK cinemas now.

Neerja is a biopic and a cinematic representation of the dramatic events that unfolded on September 5th, 1986 when Pan Am Flight 73 from Bombay to New York was hijacked in transit at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi by Palestinian extremists from Abu Nidal’s terrorist outfit. This is the story of Neerja Bhanot, a 22-year-old part time model, who was the head purser on the flight. Neerja had escaped an abusive marriage and, as a life change, decided to become an airhostess, subsequently impressing everyone so much that they made her a purser.

Throughout the horrifying ordeal, Neerja didn’t succumb to her fears and instead fought her personal demons from the past and, from the minute the plane was hijacked through the terrifying 17 hours to the grueling end, used her courage, »

Neerja Is A Brilliant Tribute To The Braveheart…And To Rajesh Khanna

19 February 2016 11:11 PM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Was Neerja Bhanot, the airhostess who on 5 September 1986 perished while trying to save lives in a hijacked aircraft, really a Rajesh Khanna fan?

In the film version of her life, the zany feisty and exceptionally courageous (as we soon discover) Neerja Bhanot is a fanatical Rajesh Khanna fan. Or maybe fanatical is not a word we ought to use, considering.

10 minutes into the film, when we see Neerja dancing to Rajesh Khanna’s ‘Bye Bye Miss Goodnight’ from the film Premnagar, I wanted to believe in the reality about Neerja Bhanot that director Ram Madhvani and his ingenious writer Saiwyn Quadras has so diligently and faultlessly put across, immortalizing the memory of the slain braveheart even while giving Indian cinema yet another example of its growing maturity.

Neerja is a film that wears its excellence casually, like a beautifully knit garment thrown on for a stroll in a windy park. »

Braveheart Neerja Bhanot's family would be watching the film on Friday in their home-town Chandigarh. Sadly, her mother Rama Bhanot passed away in December days before the trailer of the film on her daughter was released. Shabana Azmi who plays Rama Bhanot regrets that the mother won't be able to watch the film. "I had the good fortune of meeting her a year before the film was offered to me. The Bhanot family had invited me to Chandigarh to present the Neerja Bhanot award for bravery. I took an immediate shine to Ramaji and was struck by her spiritedness and her warmth." Shabana feels putting across Neerja Bhanot's story is a big responsibility. "We are very grateful that Ramaji trusted us with telling Neerja's story. She gave us her blessings on the first day of the shoot. She passed away five days before our trailer launch. I wish she could have seen the film. »

What Neerja Bhanot’s mother told Sonam Kapoor when they met

In a making of video for the upcoming film Neerja, which stars Sonam Kapoor as the late air stewardess Neerja Bhanot, the actress explains what went into the biopic, with help from director Ram Madhvani and producer Atul Kasbekar.

For director Ram Madhvani, ‘it had to be Sonam Kapoor’.
