Jill Soloway Aims to Topple the Showbiz Patriarchy With ‘I Love Dick,’ ‘Transparent’

Jill Soloway Aims to Topple the Showbiz Patriarchy With ‘I Love Dick,’ ‘Transparent’
There’s a handwritten list of rules on the whiteboard in Jill Soloway’s production office on the Paramount lot.

That there are rules at all in her workspace seems antithetical to her famously subversive nature — but on closer inspection, they convey her creative spirit ever so delightfully: “Be chill.” “Demand inclusion.” “Shift the gaze.” That last directive refers to what’s become her mantra: embracing the female gaze — telling, creating, celebrating stories from a woman’s perspective.

“I think so much of what women first realize when they start to make work is how much of their life they have spent being gazed at, and being used by male protagonists for male storylines,” says Soloway, showrunner and executive producer of Amazon’s “Transparent.” “It’s never on purpose; nobody’s trying to hurt anybody.” But, as she explains, women are often used to drive the narrative. “You become the good girl or the bad girl or

Oscar-Nominated Film Series: First 'Pirates of the Caribbean' One of Most Enjoyable Summer Blockbusters of Early 21st Century

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl': Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' review: Mostly an enjoyable romp (Oscar Movie Series) Pirate movies were a Hollywood staple for about three decades, from the mid-'20s (The Sea Hawk, The Black Pirate) to the mid-to-late '50s (Moonfleet, The Buccaneer), when the genre, by then mostly relegated to B films, began to die down. Sporadic resurrections in the '80s and '90s turned out to be critical and commercial bombs (Pirates, Cutthroat Island), something that didn't bode well for the Walt Disney Company's $140 million-budgeted film "adaptation" of one of their theme-park rides. But Neptune's mood has apparently improved with the arrival of the new century. He smiled – grinned would be a more appropriate word – on the Gore Verbinski-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,

Newcastle have been dealt another demoralising blow in their efforts to sign a striker after it emerged that Bafetimbi Gomis has held talks over a move to China.

Our pursuit of Gomis is close to turning into a fully-blown transfer saga and speculation surrounding his next destination after running down his contact at Lyon has been endless with a host of clubs from the Premier League and around Europe reportedly keeping tabs on him.

However, Chris Atkins, a writer for Espn, beinSPORT and Bleacher Report, has attempted to clarify Gomis’ future in a tweet that states the 28-year-old has spoken to Shanghai Shenua over a surprise switch to China in July.

Also, I'm being told talks are taking place between Bafetembi Gomis and Shanghai Shenhua over a move next month. @FrenchFtWeekly #Exclusive

Chasing Mavericks

Directed by: Michael Apted, Curtis Hanson

Cast: Jonny Weston, Gerard Butler, Elisabeth Shue, Leven Rambin

Running Time: 2 hrs

Rating: PG

Release Date: October 26, 2012

Plot: Based on a true story. Jay (Weston) discovers that Mavericks, one of the biggest waves on Earth, does exist. He gets his neighbor and surf legend Frosty (Butler) to train him to ride the dangerous surf.

Who’S It For? Anyone who wants to appreciate surfing a little bit more.

Overall

It’s always odd walking away from an average film, realizing there are plenty of flaws, and still kind of liking it. That’s the case with Chasing Mavericks. It’s a story about surfing. It’s a story about working hard toward a difficult task. It’s a story about a 15-year-old kid with a big smile.

The smile I’m referring to belongs to Jonny Weston. After the film, I was
