1492: Conquest of Paradise, 1992.
Directed by Ridley Scott.
1492: Conquest of Paradise arrives on Blu-ray in North America in a release that features some deleted scenes and a commentary track by a pair of film historians. If you’re a fan of this film, you might wish for more bonus features, but given its place in cinema history, you probably won’t get much more than this for a while.
Sometimes Ridley Scott captures lightning in a bottle, and sometimes he ends up holding shards of glass, his face covered in soot and his hair standing straight up, cartoon-like. 1492: Conquest of Paradise was one of his latter efforts, a movie that is beautiful to look at but which doesn’t quite come together. Perhaps it didn’t blow up in his hand so much as simply fizzle out. »

Star of Joseph Cedar's Footnote and Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer, Lior Ashkenazi, spoke with me on growing up seeing Kirk Douglas, Steve McQueen, and Paul Newman movies with his father, Burt Lancaster in Robert Siodmak's The Crimson Pirate being his first, shooting Eytan Fox's Walk On Water at Berlin's Tempelhof airport, meeting Son Of Saul director László Nemes at the Cannes Film Festival, and performing a silent scene with Richard Gere.

“Diamond Cartel,” directed by Salamat Mukhammed-Ali (“The Whole World at Our Feet”), preserves one final performance from one of Hollywood’s finest, Peter O’Toole. While it may seem sort of surreal to see Mr. O’Toole go from the wooing Katherine Hepburn to wielding a machine gun, it’s actually quite comedic.
In addition to the eight-time Oscar nominee, “Diamond Cartel” stars Emmy Award-winning actor Armand Assante and includes appearances by Michael Madsen. Pretty stacked. Additionally, the film showcases the talents of martial arts superstar Bolo Yeung (“Enter The Dragon”), Japanese TV and film veteran Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Japanese-American 11-time professional kickboxing world champion Don “The Dragon” Wilson. No, really stacked.
