Blu-ray Review – Paradise Alley (1978)

Paradise Alley, 1978.

Written and Directed by Sylvester Stallone.

Starring Sylvester Stallone, Lee Canalito, Armand Assante, Anne Archer, Frank McRae, Joe Spinell, Terry Funk, Frank Stallone, and Tom Waits.

Three brothers in the slums of 1940s New York try to make their fortune by training the youngest sibling to become an underground wrestler.

After the success of Rocky in 1976 Sylvester Stallone was a hot property in Hollywood and was pretty much able to get any passion projects he wanted a green light, which is why between Rocky and Rocky II we got trucking federation drama F.I.S.T. and, more significantly, Paradise Alley. Significant because as well as writing it Stallone also directed it (and in true Little Britain style, also sang the theme tune), which marked his first time behind the camera, setting him up to direct Rocky II the same year, and also because despite sharing many themes and plot threads as Rocky,

American Gangster heading to the small screen courtesy of Narcos co-creator

According to Screen Daily, Narcos co-creator Chris Brancato is developing a prequel series to the Ridley Scott movie American Gangster entitled The Godfather of Harlem, which will take place five years before the film and see Forest Whitaker taking on the role of mob boss Ellsworth ‘Bumpy’ Johnson.

“It stars Forest Whitaker, he will play our lead character,” said Brancato. “It’s essentially the prequel to the movie American Gangster. It’s Harlem, the 1960s, a gangster named Bumpy Johnson was very close friends with Malcom X, so the show is about the collision of the criminal underworld and the civil rights movement. It’s an opportunity to examine some of the things that are going on racially right now, but through the prism of the past.”

Brancato, who left Narcos after its first season for the short-lived Of Kings and Prophets, went on to state that he has written the script,

Blu-ray Review – 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992)

1492: Conquest of Paradise, 1992.

Directed by Ridley Scott.

Starring Gérard Depardieu, Armand Assante, Sigourney Weaver, Loren Dean, and Angela Molina.

1492: Conquest of Paradise arrives on Blu-ray in North America in a release that features some deleted scenes and a commentary track by a pair of film historians. If you’re a fan of this film, you might wish for more bonus features, but given its place in cinema history, you probably won’t get much more than this for a while.

Sometimes Ridley Scott captures lightning in a bottle, and sometimes he ends up holding shards of glass, his face covered in soot and his hair standing straight up, cartoon-like. 1492: Conquest of Paradise was one of his latter efforts, a movie that is beautiful to look at but which doesn’t quite come together. Perhaps it didn’t blow up in his hand so much as simply fizzle out.

‘Diamond Cartel’ Clip: Peter O’Toole Wields Cigarettes and Machine Guns in His Last Performance — Watch

‘Diamond Cartel’ Clip: Peter O’Toole Wields Cigarettes and Machine Guns in His Last Performance — Watch
Diamond Cartel,” directed by Salamat Mukhammed-Ali (“The Whole World at Our Feet”), preserves one final performance from one of Hollywood’s finest, Peter O’Toole. While it may seem sort of surreal to see Mr. O’Toole go from the wooing Katherine Hepburn to wielding a machine gun, it’s actually quite comedic.

In addition to the eight-time Oscar nominee, “Diamond Cartel” stars Emmy Award-winning actor Armand Assante and includes appearances by Michael Madsen. Pretty stacked. More Horror In Hollywood

Delirium, the production company whose maiden outing was the 2016 Bill Oberst Jr.-Armand Assante hit thriller Stressed To Kill, has just announced it will go into production on Purgatory Road in November 2016 for delivery mid-2017.

Directed by Mark Savage, scripted by Savage and Tom Parnell, and produced by Chris Smernes, the team behind Stressed To Kill, the film has been described as hardcore horror with a bloody helping of twisted “faith”. Set in the American South, it depicts the adventures of two brothers, –– one a psychotic, ex-communicated priest (Gary Cairns; Daylight’S End, Justified, Monumental), the other an increasingly troubled sidekick (Luke Albright; Devil’S Pass, 12 Rounds, Burn Notice) –– whose unconventional mission involves a traveling confessional and a distorted view of salvation. Entering their perfectly bloody world is a mysterious woman (Trista Robinson; The Human Race, Silent Retreat, Malignant) whom, while offering potential assistance,

Belladonna of Sadness Is a Lost Classic Worth Rediscovering

This Week in New DVD ReleasesBelladonna of Sadness Brings Tragic Beauty and a Call for Sacrifice to Home VideoPick of the WeekBelladonna of Sadness

What is it? Jeanne and Jean are a young couple in love, but after their fairy tale wedding the pair are brought before the local lord to make an offering. He forces himself on her instead before sharing her with his court, and when even her new husband turns his back on her she finds pained, messy comfort with a devil-sent imp who offers to help in exchange for her soul.

Why buy it? Eiichi Yamamoto’s early ’70s slice of psychedelia, erotica, and still-relevant commentary is a beautifully disturbing descent into our shared history of sexual violence, oppression, and the abuse of authority. If it sounds heavy, well, it is — it’s also extremely graphic with watercolor frames and hand-drawn animation that capture the atrocities with gorgeously imaginative imagery. It

Drive-In Dust Offs: Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

  • DailyDead
Well, here we are again, back in Corman waters. Why do we keep coming back? What is the pull of a Roger Corman production that calls to us like a syphilitic siren wailing from the rocks, beckoning us home? My guess is quality chafing the walls of quantity. There are a lot of exploitation movies out there, and most were justified their position on the lower rung of a double bill on a Tuesday night at the drive-in. But un film du Corman is different – he’s always had an innate gift for corralling talent on the rise, and kind enough to foster it on the way down. His turn of the decade monster mash Humanoids from the Deep (1980) is a perfect storm of his wondrous cinematic sensibilities.

And of course I mean ‘wondrous’ as it applies to our station, the gloriously trashy and deliciously weird. Humanoids fits neatly into
