Icons Of Fright interview with director Steven C. Miller

5 October 2012 1:21 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Director Steven C. Miller burst onto the scene with 2006’s Automaton Transfusion, a film about a group of high school teenagers taking on an endless horde of zombies. Made for in between $30,000-$50,000, and heavy on practical fx, the film impressed horror crowds and eventually was picked up and released by Dimension Extreme. Since then Miller has went on to direct a film for the After Dark series co-produced by SyFy (2011’s Scream Of The Banshee), 2012’s “home alone on meth” action film The Aggression Scale, and both the upcoming Under The Bed, as well as Anchor Bay’s Silent Night, Deadly Night remake (now shortened to Silent Night). To say that Miller doesn’t like to slow down would be an understatement, the guy seems to have one of the craziest work ethics around.

Steven was nice enough to answer some questions for Icons Of Fright regarding his past, »

DVD Review - The Aggression Scale (2012)

The Aggression Scale, 2012.

Directed by Steven C. Miller.

Starring Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook, Derek Mears, Boyd Kestner and Ryan Hartwig.

Synopsis:

When a group of armed men attack a family looking for stolen money, the children hit back.

Not having seen any trailers or read any reviews, it was refreshing to go into this film not knowing anything about it. The title suggested an action film of some variety. What I got was Home Alone mixed with Rambo. Whilst not of the same quality as either of those, it is still an intriguing mix.

The film centres on the Rutledge family and their new home away from the city. It's a huge house (perfect for running around and hiding in perhaps?), and it soon becomes clear that they are in the sights of Bellavance, a mob boss out on bail who is missing $500,000. He sends four uncompromising crooks to collect what's his, »

The Aggression Scale DVD Review

Director: Steven C. Miller

Starring: Ryan Hartwig, Fabianne Therese, Dana Ashbrook, Ray Wise, Derek Mears, Lisa Rotondi, Boyd Kestner

Running Time: 82 minutes

Certificate: 15

Home Alone meets First Blood is how The Aggression Scale is billed; remarkable, given it features neither Macaulay Culkin or Sylvester Stallone. Not to mention the fact it isn’t anywhere near as good as either of those films. Director Steven C. Miller (Automation Transfusion) has, on paper, tried something different with this movie even if the premise does sound familiar. Bellavance (Wise) is released from prison on bail and aims to flee the country with $500k. The only trouble is his goons – led by Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks) – have been unable to recover the money that has been stolen by a mystery thief. Elsewhere, Maggie (Rotundi), her daughter Lauren (Therese), and Bill (Kestner), and his son Owen (Hartwig) move in to a lovely house and try to play happy families, »

DVD Review: The Aggression Scale

The Aggression Scale

Stars: Ryan Hartwig, Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook, Derek Mears, Fabianne Therese | Written by Ben Powell | Directed by Steven C. Miller

In medical terms, the Aggression Scale is described as: “a psychological test measuring the frequency of overt aggressive behaviours that may result in physical or psychological injury to others”. If this film literally The Aggression Scale and lead character Owen is being tested on, then the kid has a high level of aggression and that is what makes the film so fun.

Mob boss Bellavance is out of jail and needs to skip bail fast, the problem he has is that somebody appears to have stolen $500,000 of his money. To get this back he sends out the four best hard-core hit men he has to find the culprit and kill them, retrieving his money in the process. The only problem they have, something that they could not »

Home Alone meets Rambo in The Aggression Scale, starring X-Men: First Class actor Ray Wise

26 August 2012 1:31 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Ever wondered how the classic John Hughes film Home Alone would have turned out if Macaulay Culkin's character Kevin McAllister had swapped his toy cars for a sawn-off shotgun?

The answer can be found in violent indie thriller The Aggression Scale, coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay on September 3, 2012.

Described as Home Alone meets Rambo, it sees Owen Rutledge take on a posse of hitmen sent to terrorise his family over an outstanding debt. The gang doesn't know young Owen has an emotionally-disturbed background of violent behaviour.

From up-and-coming genre director Steven C. Miller (Scream of the Banshee, Zombie Transfusion), the film is written by Ben Powell (Satanic).

It reunites Twins Peaks actors Ray Wise (pictured; Mad Men; the secretary of state in X-Men: First Class) and Dana Ashbrook (TV series Crash and The Kill Point), and also features Derek Mears (Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, »

Explosive Youth in The Aggression Scale: A Movie Review

1 June 2012 10:21 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Director: Steven C. Miller. Writer: Ben Powell. Cast: Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook and Derek Mears. If you read reviews on Steven C. Miller's (Automaton Transfusion) latest, then you will read a lot of comparisons between The Aggression Scale and Home Alone (1990). However, the former is much more violent than the latter and this film fan was reminded of the recent adaptation of I Spit on Your Grave (2010). In both films, young folk are on the run from vicious men and those vicious men find out that youth should not be underestimated. Violence awaits the foolhardy. Overall, Ben Powell's script creates for a tense and bloody time, with some predictability the film's only detriment. In case you have not heard, The Aggression Scale involves the arrest of a local mob boss (Ray Wise). He is accused of murder and he needs some stolen money to flee the country. Bellavance »

Remember the first time you watched Home Alone? You probably enjoyed it quite a bit, but still, somewhere deep in the back of your head, you knew it was missing something. That something was most likely extreme violence, bloody murder and a hot older sister. Lucky for you director Steven Miller and writer Ben Powell thought the very same thing. Their new film, The Aggression Scale, is about a group of thugs who invade a family’s home in search of money and kicks but find an emotionally disturbed boy instead. Owen is prone to violence, knowledgeable in the art of weapon-making and booby traps and very, very angry. He would eat Kevin McCallister for breakfast. The always wonderful Ray Wise stars as the mobster behind it all, and Dana Ashbrook joins him as his right-hand man and lead enforcer. That’s right…it’s a mini Twin Peaks reunion! Also »

What happens when you put Home Alone, A History of Violence, Rambo and the home invasion genre into a blender and hit frappe? You get The Aggression Scale. A rough-around-the-edges, briskly paced independent film that’s both equally entertaining and ferociously violent. Where the entirety of the home invasion is darkly nihilistic with the targeted family always meeting a grisly end, The Aggression Scale seemingly looks to follow suit but mixes it up with the attackers becoming the victims at the hands of a would-be-victim, that just so happens to be a mildly disturbed and »
